Build me a Tomcat-II ASF.
« on: 14 May 2022, 20:58:51 »
Alright, so me and the boys are currently making a bit of a BattleTech AU and we're planning on including a lot of custom units with some changes to technological development. Our main problem is that we're kinda bad at making custom units so the people of the BattleTech forum, I come to you for help.

One of the first ideas I had for our timeline was an Aerospace Fighter that is meant to be a distant successor to the F-14 Tomcat developed by Northrop Grumman during the Star League Era. The requirements put forward by the Aerospace Force is for a dual seat, high speed, reasonable agile interceptor/fighter heavy Aerospace Fighter. It's primary purpose will be to serve as a protection craft for DropShips and WarShips and an air superiority craft. The only requirements for weapons are the ability to mount 4 Arrow-IV Air to Air missiles (developed in 2605 in this TL) and have at least 3 large lasers and an LRM-15 with a preference for even more.

So, what can be built?

Is this Arrow IV requirement stipulate that the launchers must be in-built, or can they be the external air-launched variants? Or can it be a mix?
And in the case of the former, is that 4 Arrow IV launchers, or an Arrow IV launcher with at least 4 shots?

Either or.

The design would prefer an external mounting though an internal launch system is also an option.

Ah, right. Egg on my face for not reading OP's post thoroughly enough.
However, mounting four AAA missiles requires it to be a 100-ton fighter... which rather precludes "high speed" and makes "agile" difficult, especially when, even with a max-rated 400 engine, you're going to be looking at 2/3 thrust at most when fully laden with AAAs.
If you don't mind my saying, it sounds to me like you want something more along the lines of a fast dogfighter in the 40-50 ton region, which will cap you at 1-2 AAA (which to be fair, is still a hefty punch to be able to throw out on the spot).
In light of this, are you willing to amend your procurement outline to lean more one way or the other? Afraid to say your choices are have your cake or eat it here, not unless your AU has a bunch of ultralight fusion 900 engines lying around somewhere.

Alright.

We can split the program into the missile truck 100 toner for the Tomcat-II and maybe put the 40-50 toner into a separate program (maybe a Hornet-II or Super-Crusader) for later.

Sorry about that, guess I was being a little optimistic. As I said, I'm really not good at the creation table.

No worries! I'll take a stab at them later tonight or tomorrow.

I like this design but I was hoping to keep to Star League era tech and maybe a Succession War era variant too.

Tonnage limits and encumbrance still apply.
Or, at least, they should. IMO that quirk is definitely one of the more poorly worded.

Tomcat-II

Designed as a large craft escort fighter, the what the Tomcat-II lacks in in-built weapons it makes up for in durable armor and terrifying speed. Even when burdened by two of its intended "main" weapon, Air-to-Air Arrow missiles, the fighter can still easily keep pace with most others in its weight class. Once it has released its payload, it gains incredible maneuverability, able to make the most of its meager onboard weaponry by swooping in to strike the enemy where they are most vulnerable. With 10 tons of armor, the Tomcat is still remarkably tough to take down, holding its own against many of the most common weapons deployed in the Inner Sphere. The Tomcat-II's robust performance as a missile carrier in early simulations also prompted its developers to put extra time into improving the fighter's atmospheric flight capability, envisioning the fighter as also being able to serve as a strike bomber in the first wave of a planetary invasion. The Star League Royal variant makes use of double heat sinks, replaces the large laser with an ER version, and replaces the LRM-10 with a PPC; the removal of one heat sink allowed the fighter to function, the variant going on to be loved and feared in equal measure.

Quirks: Atmospheric Flyer, Fragile Fuel Tank

Tomcat-III

The ungainly but functional big brother of the Tomcat-II, the Tomcat-III is an escort and DropShip hunter to the last. Able to carry twice as many Air-to-Air Arrow missiles as its older siblings, and able to follow up with its nose-mounted AC/20, this fighter is a terror to light DropShip crews, and squadrons of them can even cause small WarShips to sweat. The downside to this firepower is its agility when so encumbered- or rather, it's lack thereof. When carrying all four AAA missiles, the fighter's maximum of 1.5g acceleration can only match the rated safe acceleration of many of the DropShips it is intended to hunt. As a result, most sorties see these fighters only carrying two or three missiles. Once it has released its payload, however, the fighter is able to match pace with the majority of medium and heavy fighters, and is able to handily out-maneuver almost the entire population of large craft. Common modifications replace the AC/20 with a gauss rifle, while a few naval commanders have opted to strip almost all of the weapons and much of the armor on the Tomcat-III to make room for surveillance equipment, and expanding the already generous fuel reserves to turn the fighter into a scout vessel, able to search for hidden enemies in dense asteroid fields and around the far sides of moons. During planetary invasions, many of the latter modification are repurposed as self-propelled, manned surveillance satellites, equipped with external consumables pods and fuel tanks that allow pilots to remain in orbit for nearly 20 continuous days (naturally, most commanders wisely opt for much shorter surveillance details, though long-lasting orbits have been used as punishments).

Odd I should find this now;  For my own AU, I came up with twin-engine small craft.  I suddenly have to wonder if I wasn't recreating the F-15 from Top Gun, or if it was really as original an idea as I thought.

I'm away from the box right now, but I think I finished the design rules even if I was stalled on the game stuff (AS was never my thing).  You can uses them if you want, I guess.  Let me know if you want a copy.

If we're being particular, EO weapons use the nose arc, so the nose is appropriate. Either way, they're just there for the sake of completeness, since they simply work differently.

I love it. Curious what the downgraded Succession Wars era variant would look like after Grumman's main production facility gets Succession Wared and production needs to continue at their secondary plants.

Both builds are Succession Wars-compatible, though I did mention in the fluff text some variants that wouldn't be.
