Design Challenge: Dark Age Battleship

Alright guys, time for another WarShip to add to the collection.

So for an AU I'm working on with my friends, we're in the market for WarShips. This is mainly because we find them cool as hell, and also because a large plot event is that slightly before and during the Dark Age, we have a major faction decide that the best solution to deterring major acts of strategic warfare against itself from both its Clan and Inner Sphere neighbors along with ensuring the protection of its deep space colonization program into unclaimed territory in the Periphery was a large production run on next generation WarShips to grant them the largest and most powerful fleet in the Inner Sphere.

While most of the plan had been centered around its procurement of a next generation Super-Carrier, experience with the Succession Wars and the Jihad made Strategic Aerospace Command realize that without a large direct combatant in the fleet, they had a capability gap against enemy heavy Battle Cruisers and Battleships. With one of the primary examined threats the procurement and planning board had ID being a potential second invasion by the Home Clans, SAC has agreed to the development and procurement of a new Battleship for the Fleet-3160 Program.

The requirements put forward for this new class of Battleship were as followed.

1. Mass between 1.5 and 1.7 million tons. This was out of both practicality concerns for available yard tonnage and for the prestige of building the largest WarShip constructed by the Inner Sphere since Star League.
2. Be a multipurpose design able to effectively serve as both an Aerospace Combatant and provide support for ground operations with organic transportation and orbital fire support.
3. Be fast enough to keep pace with Carriers and Heavy Cruisers so as to be able to serve as a super heavy carrier escort and lead cruiser groups. (3/5 Acceleration or better)

In addition to these requirements, Procurement made sure to reiterate that these thing's primary mission was first and foremost to engage and destroy WarShips within her weight class or failing that any heavy enemy orbital assets and thus needs to be armed and armored heavily enough to survive such encounters.

6 Ships of this class would be ordered with the lead ship coming online in 3142.

I agree with you 100%. That's why we crank up WarShip numbers a bit for our AU and didn't decide that everyone arbitrarily decommissioned all of them during the Dark Age.

This is a ship I've been wanting to post as part of the timeline for ages spurred on by a request from Wrangler and with the generous help from Cosair_SG who has an aero program that corrects any of my errors and formats it nicely.

I think I got this originally from the forum (I think maybe the old CBT forum) but I can't remember if that's right or wrong.  If I did I thank the original designer and I hope you like the changes I've made.  If not I hope you enjoy the pride of the Draconis Combine fleet.

==Overview:==
The Yamato-class is, quite literally, a thing born of the Draconis Combine
Admiralty's nightmares. Beginning in 3051, the Order of the Five Pillars (O5P)
 was ordered to gather intelligence regarding the capabilities of the Clans'
most powerful Battleships. Because the Draconis Combine itself was being
assaulted by the Smoke Jaguar and Ghost Bear Clans, their attention
 naturally fixed on the two most powerful ships in those Clans' Fleets: Clan
Ghost Bear's Nightlord-Class Ursa Major, and a Smoke Jaguar ship that O5P
believed was of the same class (actually this vessel is now believed to be
the Texas-class Smoke Jaguar).
    The information gathered by O5P was sketchy, wildly inaccurate, and often
based on worst-case scenarios rather than real observation, with the result
that the vessel to be constructed by Project Yamato would be far more
powerful than the Clan Battleships it was meant to be copying.
    Laid down in 3053, the Yamato-class Battleship would be delayed by
technical difficulty, bureaucratic meddling, and the basic inability of the DCA to
build a 1.5 megaton Battleship. One significant delay was even directly caused
by House Kurita's Internal Security Force (ISF,) which assassinated a senior
technician in 3057, halting work on the vessel's superstructure until a replacement
could be trained.
    An entire shipbuilding industry grew around the massive vessel, converting
New Samarkand into one of the Inner Sphere's finest warship yards, but as the
vessel suffered setback after setback, the date became 3059, then 3060, then
3061.  The vessel was launched in 3063. Christened the DCA Musashi, it was so
plagued with technical difficulties that its shakedown cruise was cut short at
three months - in that time, the crew had reported over one thousand-two
hundred technical issues, and over forty crew members had been killed, including
the vessel's captain.
    With all these problems funding for the project was cancelled and the vessel was
put into mothballs. Every attempt by the DCA to revive the project was rebuffed by
the Coordinator until after the Jade Falcon War of 3067.  With the Clans beginning
to strain against the Occupation Zone borders the DCA noticed that they would need
a WarShip capable of putting up a fight against the Clan Battleships.  Beginning in
3068, Wolf Dragoon technicians were brought in to examine the Yamato's systems,
and they corrected many significant faults, but when the vessel was launched on
another abortive shakedown cruise in 3071, it was discovered that the might Musashi's
power grid was unable to simultaneously accommodate its main weapons battery,
main drive, and sensor systems. In fact, only one could be used at a time.  Again with
Dragoon help the remaining technical issues were quickly resolved and DCS Musashi
entered service in 3073. Musashi would be followed by Nagato (3077) and the
Matsu (3081).


==Capabilities:==
Designed to compete with a class of ships that never existed, the Yamato, when
finally completed, easily outstripped both of its parent designs in terms of both
armour and armament. Yamato more armour than the Nightlord, with reinforced
broadside plate like a Texas. It also manages to pack a more potent version of
both vessels armament into what is essentially an enlarged Nightlord frame.
    The most numerous weapons on the Yamato-class are thirty-six 55cm Naval
Laser Cannons, both arrayed along its broadside and scattered forward and with
a concentration aft, they provide a level of firepower rarely seen in naval-laser
systems.  eight class-30 Naval Autocannons provide Yamato's aft protection. 
Additional fire-support is provided by twenty four heavy naval particle projection
cannons, turreted forward and aft of the vessel's broadside and eight Heavy
Naval Gauss Cannons split into four paired mounts provide considerable forward
firepower. Twelve AR-10 launchers provide versatile missile support in the fore-arcs
and make for devastating extreme range assaults and fighter defence, they are
also fully capable of deploying the Combine‘s nuclear arsenal only to be used in
case of complete collapse in the face of an enemy. 
    Originally the ship carried only light anti-fighter and missile defence, however this
was upgraded during the 3068-3071 overhaul.  In late 3067 one final defensive
measure was added eight Davion-designed, and reverse engineered, Screen Launchers
 - these screens are spread around the vessel providing the vessel with defences
against naval class weapons making targeting the Yamato harder for enemy gunners
buying the Yamato‘s own gunners to kill their target.  Twenty-six Combine-built
Heavy PPCs and twenty AMS cannons provide a capable defence against hostile
missile systems and a nasty surprise for incoming enemy fighters.
    In terms of auxiliary craft, the Yamato Project vessels are adequately fitted, carrying
a full DCA Aerospace Fighter wing, six small craft, and six DropShips normally assault
ships or fighter carriers as the Yamato is designed to lead an attack force and eliminate
enemy naval assets. A lithium-fusion battery provides standard strategic mobility for a
vessel of this size.  For internal defence the Yamato carries seventy-two battle armoured
marines, these troops can also be deployed via the use of the vessels many small craft,
DropShips or on their own for assaults against enemy vessels stupid enough to close on
the one and a half million ton vessel.  In 3074 the vessel was upgraded with a Naval
Command-Communication-and-Control Net similar to that of the Omi Kurita-class
Super-Carrier making the vessels even more effective when working together.


==Notable Vessels & Crews:==
DCA Musashi
    This vessel was the first vessel launched Yamato and was rushed into production
a year earlier than originally planned just in time for Coordinator-Regent Minoru Kurita’s
assaults against the Star Adder Occupation Zone.  The Musashi was directed to
attack and disable or destroy the Star Adder’s Nightlord-class Absolute Truth. 
Although they failed to destroy the vessel they did drive it from the Inner Sphere following
a battle in the Turtle Bay system.  The Musashi was however heavily damaged in the
battle and would return to New Samarkand for several months of refit following the battle.

==Deployment==
With the Rasalhague Dominion and Snow Ravens on either border and both fielding massive
Leviathan, Nightlord-class and McKenna-class Battleships, and the Federated Suns on the
other border with the First Prince and Columbia-class Battleships, the Yamato type vessels
rarely keep a constant station.  Instead showing the flag in the Combine's most remote
systems and on their most hostile borders warning any enemy that if they tested the Combine
borders they would have to pay a considerable price.  Maintaining the three operational Yamato
class  vessels rule out any attempt to build any more.

3075 EDIT: Initial intelligence about this capacity appears to be wrong with the emergence of the
Omi Kurita-class Carriers which was based directly off this hull design.  As there are three such
vessels in service or under production Combine capacities were obviously underestimated.

Not my best design but I didn't want to remake anything Ive made before. Decided to make it a bit faster, with my headcannon being the ship would roll to present broadsides faster than the 'standard' 3/5 designs. Decent cargo and fighter complement along with a decent DropShip escort... its lighter on capital weaponry than I'd like. However it does have a lot of Naval Lasers and a really heavy broadside as well as my favorite a big gun bow shot. Name is up for debate... I'm terrible at naming and it was the first thing on my mind lol. Once again ammo weights are off because MML is weird so... ya know subtract from the cargo lol. Since it will probably be a flagship I gave it a 'full' electronics suite . Flaws include light aft weaponry, smaller cargo bay than average, light anti-fighter array, and not a lot of 'heavy' guns for range, but a lot of 'medium' guns.

Overview
   The Free Worlds League's first Battleship was designed in the Ionus
system at the Illium Shipyards and launched in 3108.  The ship is designed
to face down against the WarShips of the Lyran Commonwealth, Wolf Empire and
Capellan Confederation.

Capabilities
   The Imperial-class Battleship is able to match the Lyran Mjolnir
class for speed and is able to fight naval sized opponents with a mix of
Naval Gauss Rifles, Naval autocannons and Naval Lasers.  The naval autocannon
armament in particular stands out with eleven "trip-turrets" covering every
angle of the hull.  For defence against fighters and DropShips the class is
equipped with a variety of Heavy Particle Cannons and Light Gauss Rifles. 
For missile defence the ship is equipped with an extensive grid of Laser
Anti-Missile Systems which never run out of ammunition.

   Supporting each Imperial-class is thirty-six aerospace fighters,
twenty small craft, two DropShips and ninety-six Battle Armour troopers. The
ship can carry two hundred-and forty passengers, though these are often
occupied by the pilots and support staff of the aerospace fighter pilots. 
Finally each Imperial is equipped with an advanced Mark II Lithium Fusion
Battery and is capable of carrying over eighty-four thousand tons of cargo.

Deployment
   The first Imperial-class Battleship was commissioned into the
District of Marik's navy in 3108.  The MS Grand Marik instantly becoming the
largest WarShip in service of a Free World's League navy.  Parliment has
called for vessels of the Free Worlds League to retake the FWLS designator
but the Captain-General has refused to support this until parliament agrees
to the recreation of Federal troops under the command of Parliament and
independent of the District states.

Here's a relatively new ship class from my AU ( I know I've got older designs to post but this one has sat waiting to join the AU for ages).  Originally JA Baker sent me the basic design based on his newest design (new in September 2014) I've played around with it a few times since then changing it as I came up with new tech and as new tech entered BattleTech.

Overview
The original Indefatigable-class was a far different beast from what is
currently being built to serve in the Federated Suns, Lyran Commonwealth and
Star League Defence Force navies.  Originally designed to escort the Columbia
and Mercury classes into battle it was a class that was surplus to the needs
of the AFFS navy and a class that would never be built.  Enter the LCAF and
SLDF who both required a class as a filler before homegrown designs were
ready to be produced and were willing to pay the price which allowed the
builders to produce two vessels for the Federated Suns on top of those built
for the other states.

Capabilities
Originally designed as an escort for the current Battleships serving the AFFS
the vessel needed many changes to serve in the LCAF and SLDF Navies.  The
first change to the Indefatigable was to lower its maximum speed from 4G to 3G,
this made room for the change and expansion of the naval firepower of the
Battleship.

From the original design the AR-10 Missile Launchers have been retained and
expanded on allowing for the use of capital missiles from almost any angle
of the Battleship.  Similarly the Naval Particle cannons have been retained
giving the WarShip heavy hitting long range firepower.  Similarly the Naval
lasers of the original design were retained and redistributed into eighteen
twin turrets spread around the hull.

This is where the similarities of the designs end however while the original
design featured Medium Naval Gauss Rifles the Lyrans called for a heavier
variant, initially attempts were made to replicate the Clan's Reapers but
this experiment reportedly failed badly, with the design settled on the
heavie standard variant several more were added to the final design further
expanding the designs heavy hitting firepower.

Conventionally the mix of large and medium standard lasers supported by medium
pulse lasers, with forty-eight individual weapons, was replaced wholey with an
array of thirty-six Extended-Range Large Lasers increasing the range and
overall firepower of the array.  Backing these weapons up are thirty-two
Silver Bullet Gauss Rifles and twenty-one Extended-Range Long Range Missiles
spread around the hull giving extensive anti-fighter, Small Craft and DropShip
firepower from all angles.

Four DropShips (often C3 equipped Pocket WarShips), sixty aerospace fighters,
ten small craft and eighty-four Battle Armour equipped Marines give the vessel
more options while four hundred passenger quarters give the bay personnel and
any passengers on board the vessel a comfortable journey on extended patrols.
More than seventy-six thousand tons of cargo space keep the Indefatigable's
supplied with parts, additional fuel, water and food.

Finally at the insistance of the Star League Defence Force designers added
an Advanced Lithium Fusion Battery Mk II allowing the vessels of this class
to make additional jumps over conventionally equipped LF Battery vessels. 
A Naval C3 allows the ships to coordinate their fire with similarly equipped
DropShips and WarShips while an advanced Naval Anti-Missile System, provided
by the SLDF, gives the vessels of this class a centralized Anti-Missile
control.

Deployment
In an agreement made between the Federated Suns, Lyran Commonwealth and
Star League Defence Force the Federated Suns initially agreed to produce six
vessels of this class with two each joining each navies.  These vessels were
all delivered in 3107.
