Two Airframes Challenge
« on: 01 June 2022, 14:10:38 »
Airframe one is to be designed by "The fighter Mafia"-that group of generals who disdain the close-air-support mission and think of bombing as a gloryless chore.

Airframe Two, is to be designed expressly as a close air-support platform.

Two things must be the same:

1. C-bill cost, using canon costing formulas.  both airframes (whether Conventional Fighter, ASF, or 'other') must work out to the same cost in C-bills.

2. Battle Value.  BV must be within plus or minus ten percent under BV2.0/Techmanual.

Everything else, can be different, but they're fighting for the same slice of some defense spending pie and they're designed NOT to be truly interchangeable in the roles.

Tech Base is post 3150.  bonus points for min/maxing to each specific role to as close to ludicrous as you can manage without breaking the build system.

Winner gets the contract, loser doesn't get built in large numbers.

additional bonus points for weird flaws and obvious weaknesses on designs that are astronomically expensive.

This challenge originates off of the current aviation pictures thread on the off-topics. someone mentioned the A-10 AND the Fighter Mafia at the same time.  made me giggle.

Do we get any points (Positive or negative) for naming one of them Blitzfighter?

I'm going to assume the same ±10% on costs as there is on BV. (And before we start, I should say that I'm not very familiar with ASF construction, so apologies if I make a silly error).

The CAS crowd wanted to optimize the craft for strafing, so its weapons mix is comprised entirely of front-facing small and medium pulse lasers, supported by a targeting computer. The unit's speed is fast enough to carry a full bomb load while retaining a modicum of maneuverability(3/5 fully loaded), and the armour has been placed based upon an analysis of hit locations when ground units fire at strafing fighters.

Conversely, the fighter mafia wanted something that was more nimble, long-ranged, and that didn't limit itself to an all-energy armament. Because of the cost target on the project, they couldn't use an XL engine to give it a further increase to maneuverability, but the ability to manage 5.5g acceleration from engine power alone was seen as (barely) sufficient for the purpose.

The CAS crowd is going to prioritize BOMBS under BT rules.  Internal bomb bays for cargo tonnage and speed are going to win there.  On the fighter front, your going to want SPEED and threshold crits.  Those should be relatively easy to trade tons between... I'll give it a shot this weekend assuming someone else doesn't crack that code first...  ^-^

Internal bomb bays are a quirk, not standard construction, so I didn't see them in MML. But yeah, a design incorporating that could be fun. Pair it with Poor Performance, maybe - those are balanced on points, and it seems fair for a pig of a design like this.

Bombs are one ton each, and that quirk lets you dump six per turn, so I'd say I want at least six tons of cargo. Maybe for my design, you'd knock four of the MPLs down to SPLs, cut three heat sinks, and save a ton on the TC, to get an 8-ton bomb bay.
