Design Challenge: Erzatz-Flanker Aerospace Fighter
« on: 01 June 2022, 10:26:45 »
Yet another design for AU.

This challenge is calling for an Aerospace Fighter built along the same lines as the famous Su-27 Flanker. In other words, one of our Original Great Houses is shopping for an extremely agile large ASF with a heavy, multi-purpose armament and is willing to sacrifice on durability for an excellent dogfighter.

The exact design called for is to be purchased as a 40-60 Ton design with no required armament other than that it needs to be both large and adaptable.

Stingray not give you what you are looking for?
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

This is meant to be a Stingray competitor (both in combat and on the market) in our AU.

Year restrictions? Is it needs to be Star League techs?

The idea is simple; since the target in distance is hard to aim, you can just close in and end the enemy. So it forgo all the range bracket and only aim for short range where you can surely finish off the enemy. I think that it would work better if you have AAA missiles(or its lighter version), though. Due to its lack of enough space to add the heat sink, it is intended to be fire either left or light wing but not both pulse lasers on the same time.

You're probably looking for something more novel, but I have this lying around as a post-Helm refit and changed the model number and dates.  It downgrades to the canonical HCT-213 Hellcat.

This one may be a bit too extreme on the "extremely agile" part of the design brief.  It has thrust to burn and can afford to actually spend those thrust points more than potentially faster light fighters.  Wikipedia says the SU-27 was adopted for long range air defense.  The Greyhound can deliver Alamos and has the fuel to do so farther out to avoid the Ares Convention limit.  It has as much long range air superiority firepower as a Shilone or Lucifer backed up by an admittedly anemic short range laser armament, but if anything can pick its engagement envelope it's this.  It also tries to be a period typical "one piece of advanced technology" design, though that one piece of advanced technology is the rare in aerospace for the period extralight fusion engine.

Medium Laser            LWG       1.0      3      5    0    0    0

Downteched it's still pretty nasty.  There's no need to mess with the armor which is already standard plate.  Speed drops one notch and 25% of the LRM tubes and a ton of fuel still have to be sacrificed leaving it only 40% over standard fuel load.  It's more likely to be carrying 50 points of bombs for inertial deployment (I think the rules call it space bombing and it used to be in StratOps before the book reorganization) than nukes and it no longer outruns most of the dogfighters while at full external load, but it's still sort of filling the long range heavy interceptor and air defense role of the design its supposed to be emulating.
