General War AU: Hedgehog class Destroyer
« on: 06 June 2022, 13:00:19 »
The Hedgehog class, of which THS Hedgehog is the only currently extant member, is an experimental design originally intended to test the feasibility of fitting a WarShip with a dedicated point defense array, and as such it was specifically designed to counter the Quixote class missile frigate in a hypothetical massed nuclear missile attack, currently considered the worst case scenario any single ship in the Terran Fleet could face.

Before this, the Hegemony relied on its shear numbers to deter an escalation to nuclear forces. While a weaker power might be able to quickly destroy one or more Hegemony ships with a determined missile attack, the retaliation by the vast numbers of additional ships the Hegemony had in service would inevitably overwhelm and potentially devastate an aggressor. Further, it was the common theory of the Hegemony fleet that any practical point defense grid would actually be unable to resist a sufficiently determined missile attack, and thus resources were better spent A) designing ships that were well suited to engaging and destroying an opponent before a successful missile strike could be launched, and B) ensuring sufficient ships were available to replace any losses taken from those enemies that managed to escape destruction.

However, there were always critics to this strategy, sometimes uncharitably describing it as using the Hegemony's fleet screen as ablative armor, and towards the end of the 25th century, their voices became loud enough for the Hegemony Navy to approve a series of tests on developing and beating dedicated missile defense systems, culminating in the construction of THS Hedgehog.

As can be expected of a nation with such vast resources (and, possibly a century and a half of pervasive endemic graft), the Hedgehog is an entirely new design from keel to stern post, rather than a refit of an existing hull. At half a megaton in mass, it lies firmly in the Light destroyer classification preferred by the Terran Hegemony, with an acceleration profile and weight of broadside not terribly far off from the Essex, though with an armor belt and hull toughness somewhat closer to the Lola. A main battery of naval lasers and naval gauss guns provides its offensive hitting power, but the real star of the show is the point defense array, designed to repel a full broadside of missiles from a Quixote class frigate from all aspects. To achieve this, the ship carries thirty six independently targeted arrays of twenty point defense lasers, placed along the hull in a way to ensure that nine such arrays can be brought to bear against any attack. To further expand its hypothetical role as a screening ship, the Hedgehog also carries a large array of anti-fighter lasers and a full aerowing of its own.

Extensive testing showed the Hedgehog's capability in defeating a massed missile attack from a Quixote, and its overall capabilities as a general escort, however ultimately the Hegemony Admiralty decided the ship was a failure. It could do the job it set out to do, but the massive weapons array, its associated sub systems, and the huge crew required to man it, made the ship expensive to operate and of "limited utility" outside its intended role. Some in the admiralty even went so far as to say that naval missiles were cheap enough that building a ship to beat one benchmark would simply inspire enemies to set a new one it couldn't defeat, thus rendering an entirely new design built for one job completely obsolete. Whether this was a fair assessment or not, these criticisms were enough that the program was ultimately shelved, and THS Hedgehog would be moved to the reserve fleet after only ten years of service.

Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

Certainly amusing, but I STILL advocate for filling out every spare slot in a weapon arc with a point defense weapon...  ^-^

Just think, once AMS is a thing you'd get better performance if you swapped each facing's hundred and eighty small lasers for ten AMS and ammo.  ;D

Realistically, though, you shouldn't need more than three or four bays of point defense guns per arc fighting most canon ships, since a single ship is unlikely to be able to fire more than four missile bays at you at a time. The Quixote is mostly an outlier.

It's really only having single bays covering a facing where non-AMS point defense gets terribly questionable, since that'll only ever get to engage one missile attack per round.

Coincidentally, I think every canon ship equipped with non-AMS point defense only has one bay of it covering each facing.  ;D

And many of those aren't near their weapon limits in those arcs... hence why I say "every spare slot"...  8)

I love our weird hedgey-hoggy baby, and I for one will brook no mocking of it.  That being said however, it's spanked baddly by the gunners rules and the weakness of it's point defense guns.  How many tons does it spend on fire-control computers again?

Those Large Lasers need to GO.

Killing yourself in FC tonnage just for an extra 10 lasers effecting the Naval Weapons bays.

I'd honestly drop 5 of the bays for each SL arc & put a bay of the LLs in there instead.

80 SL & 20 LL is plenty IMO.

Then 10 NL + 10 LL in the Fore sides, down to 6 LL in the NG arcs.

9128 tons, almost none of it because of the small lasers, which account for less than four hundred tons.  ;)

This is an entirely fair assessment. Originally I didn't have any large lasers in the design. I imagined them as a last minute addition pushed by admirals that wanted their dedicated screening ship to have integral fighter defenses like the Farragut but didn't really understand the engineering.

Ultimately, I designed the Hedgehog to be something of a tragic figure. With a bit more thought and a bit less "just throw more at the problem", it could have been the start of something great for the HAF, but its weaknesses, and casual misunderstanding of how those weaknesses came about, prevented it.

    Bay 1:  Fighter (20)            4 Doors
    Bay 2:  Small Craft (4)         1 Door
    Bay 3:  Cargo (46628.0 tons)    1 Door

I missed this one the first time around.

Its a TH ship so I'd swap 2 of those fighters to shuttles & go 18/6 for even squadrons all around.
