Fighter of the Week Workshop #034 - Riever
« on: 10 March 2011, 05:43:25 »

THE WORKSHOP
Now, if I were a merc in the IS1 era and I had some Rievers on my OOB, I’d see about getting them some energy weapons for self-defence.  Losing that “Wrath of God”TM AC/20 would be a sacrifice, especially for the anti-’Mech missions, but the ability to actually strafe targets - and actually fight one’s way home with empty ammo bins - might just be worth it.  I’d exchange the AC/20 for twin PPCs, install twin medium lasers aft to discourage the tail-gaters, and trade two heat-sinks for additional fuel capacity.  All your long-range weapons are heat-neutral (2 x PPC + LRM-10 = -2 heat); your close-action bays are heat-neutral (4 x SRM-6 = -2 heat); if need be, you can fight your way home with all your energy weapons blazing (2 x PPC + 2 x ML = 0 heat); and your combat radius and/or loiter time are greatly extended.  }:)  ;)  ;D

Modifications to the IS2 Rievers?  I’ll stick to the F-700, since it makes so much more sense to me.  ::)  And frankly, the same programme as above seems to make sense: drop three of those DHS and the AC/20, add Artemis to the SRM racks (for a nice 25% increase in effective hitting power), then install twin ERPPCs in the nose and twin MLs aft.  Again, the long-range weapons are heat-neutral (2 x ERPPC + LRM-10 = 0 heat), you can run all five missile-racks and the aft MLs without a heat-deficit (if you need to hit your target and discourage the guy behind you), and if you need to fight your way home, you’ve got the throw-weight and the heat-capacity.  (Okay, firing all the energy weapons means a +2 overheat, but who the heck is going to stay in front of twin ERPPCs for more than three turns if he can possibly help it?  ???  Remember, your objective is just to get him out of your way - killing him outright would be a nice bonus, nothing more.  ::))

Alternately, if you can sweet-talk some Feddie supply-type into ‘losing’ a RAC/5 or two, you can try something like the little bastard beauty below.  The MLs provide a minimal self-defence capability once your ammo runs out, not a serious attempt at strafing firepower - and remember to address each tactical situation with the right weapon; you have the heat capacity for one pair of MLs or the RAC/5.  ;)

’39 Update

Quote from: Trace Coburn
  [brew]  UPDATE WORKSHOP  [brew]
The loss of the F-100’s/-700’s LRM capability in the -700b isn’t especially crucial to retaining the ‘Riever feel’ - the type’s a close-range slugger and always has been - but few pilots enjoy being unable to respond to taking a Long-range pounding while they make their runs to target, and there are certainly more than enough weapons capable of giving them said poundings these days.  :-X
Now, I'll concede that this proposed fix loses the Ultra-cannon's ‘double-tap’ and the SSRMs’ knack for ammo-conservation, but it also loses the notorious jamming issues of rapid-fire guns and gains a lot in terms of ammunition flexibility - which is no small thing, given the varied tasks of an aerospace force.  Better yet, if you’re feeling the financial or logistical pinch, you can always resort to using simple, off-the-shelf ‘dumb’ rounds instead of the fancy smart-rounds - ‘dumb’ bullets being a helluva lot better than ‘no bullets at all’.  ::)

Heat is wrong on the MML7s, should be 4 each.  Allows you to shed 3 double heat sinks and still stay heat neutral.  Maybe rear medium lasers and more armor.

My MML build stays with the classic's five launchers

I'm going to add a refit idea I have for an ongoing MegaMek Against the Bot campaign.  I love my F-100 but I'm thinking about buying a second one and swapping the AC/20 and LRM-10 for a Long Tom Cannon with 3 tons of ammo:

If you could build one with 10 bombay, you'd get twin Arrow and/or up to ten bombs for a true terror!

Can ASF be built with internal bomb bays?  Or is that just a quirk?  It has up to 20 slots for bombs due to being a 100-tonner.

with bomb bays you build it with cargo space then give it the bomb bay quirk. but bomb bays are limited.. you can only drop 6 bombs at a time per hex.

With that much configurable ordnance, I'd like to think of this is the first omnifighter  >:D  I retained the AC/20 for flavor, and replaced the LRM-10 with a large laser and moved an SRM-6 to the aft position to discourage pursuers.

I also have a F-100b refit, which was somewhat inspired by the AS7-K Atlas:

Yea! But the new upgraded F-100 is still screwed because it retains that 2 max Arrow capacity, but also still viable with 12 tons of " other " munitions! Like the ability to transport a full 20 ton Mech!

More like drop a Celerity Prime... followed up by an Arrow launch and supporting two bomb, bomb run!

Or better yet, Celerity 05-X!

EDIT: Combat drop, er... drop it as a bomb run, a Celerity 05-X : Impact Resistant Armor!

In the fluff, the Riever was a low-tech Marik design that used domestic production to create a cheap, durable, short-range attack platform. Sooo... what if they used more of the signature low-tech weapon?

In an alternate universe, this was what rolled out of the factories of Andurien Aerotech. Designed in collaboration with Imperator Automatic Weaponry, the F-103 mounted not one, but three Imperator-B autocannon. Balancing their great weight required them to build the outboard cannon into the wing-roots, to relieve the strain of high-G manouevers. Twenty rounds each gave it moderate endurance. Long-range softening-up was the job of the Gamma LRM20; with eighteen salvos, it could pepper a dropship, 'Mech or fighter before the AC10s came into range to finish the job.

The Riever has enough space to go all in on the AC-20s
That's absolutely sickening. :D

The rational L2 F-200 will obviously be triple UAC20 with backup ERML. The funny one will be three Thunderbolt-20s with an ERLL or two.

The Riever was intended as a close-attack platform, designed with the specific purpose of overwhelming the opponent with fire, while still being able to be built with the FWL's limited resources. It was fearsome indeed, but its massed missiles and assault autocannon, while powerful, ran out of ammunition quickly.
The "Sunburst" variant was created to address this, as a refit package made when the Binary Laser Cannon was still in limited production. The airframe was basically unchanged, retaining the thick armour and heatsinks of the F-100, as well as the massed SRMs. The AC/20 and its ammo was taken out and replaced with a smaller but hot-running BLC, giving it a longer-ranged directed-energy punch that would never run dry. To compensate for the drop in raw damage, the LRM system was upgraded to an LRM15 with an extra ton of missiles, and one extra HS was added to manage the heat. Even with this, there was still space to mount MLs in the wings as 'getting-home guns' for when the SRMs ran dry, and a rear-facing ML to try to discourage dogfighters from attacking their tails.
With the decommisioning of the last Blazer line in the FWL, this variant faded from history, as most were reconverted into stock F-100s as the Blazers malfunctioned, though some tried mounting PPCs and even more MLs in their place.
