Getting back into the WarShip design race has gotten my creative juices flowing. And since I'm waiting on a turn to process before I start, I figured I'd build a from-scratch fleet for an empire. I'm assuming a generic Great House, late SLDF era, with full access to 2750 tech. My budget is one trillion C-bills, and I want to keep it to, say, half a dozen designs.

Also, I find the canon rules for AMS to be deeply frustrating for designing custom WarShips - too many and missiles just become obsolete, and they're super-easy to add. I haven't house-ruled the stats at all, but I'm assuming that there's some manner of gameplay house rule that makes them usable but not dominant. As such, I've tried to use reasonable numbers for the design roles, and not engage in max-min shenanigans.

Wulfenbach-class Battleship:

The Wulfenbach is designed as a raw combat power unit, and to act as the centrepiece of a formation, usually in the company of a carrier and multiple escorts. Not especially fast, and weak against small units, but it's tough, and packs some blistering firepower.

Heterodyne-Class Cruiser:
The Heterodyne is intended to be the empire's main strategic reserve. As the only design to mount a lithium-fusion battery, and one of the faster ships in the fleet, the goal of this class is to come to the assistance of attacked sectors and strengthen the main local defense fleets. It is intentionally a jack-of-all-trades unit. Note also the very substantial fuel reserves, designed for fast-charging the battery, or for engaging in high-speed burns for extended periods of time.

Sturmvoraus-class Carrier:

While most ships in the fleet carry some provision for support units, the Sturmvoraus focuses on smaller vessels almost exclusively. Mounting only a very limited weapon suite, its mass is instead used for large swarms of fighters, and supporting provisions and fuel.

Many of the fleet's other designs skimp on cargo to engage in combat at maximal effectiveness. To ensure proper resupply, the transport wing exists to deliver ammunition, supplies, fuel, and food to the rest of the fleet. Between their internal cargo bays and their numerous docking collars, they can carry large amounts of supplies. They're also set up with substantial berthing capacity for ground forces, allowing them to aid in invasions.

Fleet Deployments

I'm assuming that the fleet will be divided into five sectors. One facing each adjacent Great House, one facing the Hegemony, one facing the Periphery and any states there, and one near the capital.

Each fleet will be centred around one battleship and one carrier, with several escorting destroyers, and a single transport to supply them on local operations. Fleets will have administrative control over several frigates, but they will generally be operating separately, not docked alongside the main fleet.

The fleet at the capital will also have the entire cruiser force, under normal circumstances, along with several extra transports to operate in support of any planned offensives. (Any advantages this offers for the central government in ensuring the compliance of restive feudal vassals is purely coincidental)

Standard fleet: 1x Wulfenbach battleship, 1x Sturmvoraus carrier, 1x von Zinzer transport, 6x Voltaire destroyer(usually 3-4 with battleship, 2 with carrier, and 0-1 with transport)

Additional resources at capital world: 10x Heterodyne cruiser, 10x von Zinzer transport, 10x Voltaire destroyer(usually one with each transport)

Roaming: 31x Tryggvassen frigate

Total cost: 998,571,800,400 C-bills.

Also, I find the canon rules for AMS to be deeply frustrating for designing custom WarShips - too many and missiles just become obsolete, and they're super-easy to add. I haven't house-ruled the stats at all, but I'm assuming that there's some manner of gameplay house rule that makes them usable but not dominant. As such, I've tried to use reasonable numbers for the design roles, and not engage in max-min shenanigans.

Have you seen the most recent errata? AMS now target on a per bay rather than per missile basis. This makes it a bit harder to make a ship completely immune to naval missiles.
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

I'm not sure how much they've fixed it, but it suffers from the classic BT issue of being constrained by 35 years of past designs, which still need to work. My preferred solution would be to jack a capital AMS up to a hundred tons each, give or take, make them somewhat more effective per-shot, and seriously limit their multi-shot capability.

The change in the point defense rules make AMS more effective since they can still fire an unbounded number of times and now they can make a bay of 15 Killer Whales miss more easily (by inflicting 13 points of capital damage rather than 60).  The rules also change so point defense weapons in general can attack capital missiles.  The first change seems bad because it makes capital missiles on given design more pointless and is easily avoided at design time by simply putting fewer launchers in a bay.  The second one seems useful---there is no good reason why point defense bays should work against LRMs but not capital missiles. 

In the game we are currently playing, AMS bays are house-ruled to firing at most 6 times per turn (i.e. at the ground rate) which avoids some of the deeper absurdities.  In addition, point defense (and AMS) bays can miss, so if you really, really, want to kill every missile, you need an enormous amount of point defense.

I know you said for this thread its 2750, but isn't that NOT the case in the WS Arms Race thread?

Why I'm stating that is the AMS wasn't invented by the TH till 2617 & that means the SOONEST a house would get access to that tech is 50 years later IIRC from the original SLSB.

So it would be at least 2667 till they get access & then since I doubt your suddenly fixing every single WS already built you'd be looking at only getting them onto WS that were new from that point onward.

So my point is, if your designing a true "historical" navy then some of the designs should pre-date the introduction of the AMS & not carry it.

And even a new ship probably shouldn't be carrying banks of dozens of them.
  (My personal record for a Custom Battleship sized warship was 18 in a BS bay, but that shouldn't be common)

I think the new changes to AMS per BAY & the limit of 6x per turn to mimic the actual duration involved would both be good nerfs & keep them usable w/o being OP.
But really, Missiles are only OP if your launching NUKES anyway.

Energy & ACs are far better uses of tonnage IMO, but, I'm no expert.

This was not intended as an entry for the arms race thread. That thread was just what got me thinking in this direction.

I also have lingering impressions of missile swarms being a huge deal because of my house rules from the first arms race thread, where I said fighters could carry missiles on their bomb hardpoints. So perhaps my AMS instincts are..."overly ambitious", from the lingering trauma of players running with the rather crazy rules I'd made. But given how light AMS systems are, it seems wise to toss them in when there's spare fire control slots. The cost is basically nil, so why not?

And yeah, missiles are pretty weak weapon systems, aside from niche uses (PWS DropShips, bearings-only or tele-operated launches from beyond direct-fire range, etc.).

The use of AMS here seems entirely reasonable to me and under standard BT rules a small fleet will achieve nigh-immunity to missile-based attacks.
