Inner Sphere Aerospace Fighters Armored Sensibly
« on: 17 September 2022, 21:30:36 »
These designs were heavily inspired by the armor of the Hydaspes and assume that variable damage threshold rules aren't being used.  I've been absolutely spoiled by the Hydaspes for its armor allows few weapons to cause threshold crits.  I attempted to apply that same principle to my favorite Inner Sphere aerospace fighters.  I feel that the sacrifice in some firepower for a lot more armor is absolutely worth it since threshold crits heavily impact an aerospace unit's combat effectiveness, so I think a better balance between offense and defense can be achieved than what's usually seen in canon:

Overview
The Ahab debuted in 2697 as the heaviest Aerospace Fighter ever produced, a devastating missile boat for the SLDF and other Great House armies.

Capabilities
Poor acceleration and maneuverability, likened by pilots to "a moose in molasses", is compensated by fifteen and a half tons of standard armor and a staggering array of weaponry: a full squadron of Ahabs is capable of shooting down light and medium DropShips in a single pass. The design would be modified once, in 2703, to accommodate a Narc Missile Beacon.

Deployment
Before the addition of the Narc Missile Beacon, the Ahab was designed with a trio of Medium Lasers housed in the nose, along with four additional Heat Sinks.

History
Originally manufactured by Harvard Company, Inc., BBA would pick up production in the early 3000s when financial malfeasance brought down the company. BBA would build only a limited number of new Ahabs and spare parts, and only to ComStar, allowing the fighters in service to the other Inner Sphere powers to fall into disrepair. In 3061 the company began production of two new variants, which were sold only to the Word of Blake.

Overview
Designed by the Star League, the heavy Chippewa isn't extremely fast, but it has an impressive array of armament.

Deployment
A House Davion modification that eliminates two of the Large Lasers for an extra 9.5 tons of armor.

History
Mostly used in the Lyran Commonwealth, the Chippewa has become House Steiner's main heavy fighter. Prior to the start of the First Succession War Steiner captured the Bowie Industries plant on Dell, where W5 models were produced until House Kurita successfully destroyed the plant in a raid. Another major production site was the Bowie Industries in the planet Wyatt, untill 3068, when the Word of Blake nuked it during the Jihad. A heavy fighter, the Chippewa utilizes its large wings to provide added maneuverability when fighting in an atmosphere. The outer portions of each wing can retract inward, allowing for the fighter to be stored aboard transports more easily.

Overview
The compact laser system and sleek design of the Corsair made it a superior aerospace fighter in an atmosphere, rivaling the capabilities of Conventional Fighters.

Capabilities
It was well protected by thirteen and a half tons of armor, while sixteen heat sinks kept the all-energy weapon loadout from overheating. It carried a fuel load of five tons and its GM 200 power plant could achieve a maximum thrust of four and a half gravities, with a safe thrust factor of three gravities.

Deployment
Geared towards short range combat, the Corsair carries a a total of two Martell Medium Lasers and four Exostar Small Lasers, while two Exostar Large Lasers gives it some additional reach. Both medium lasers are located in each wing, with the large lasers and two of the small lasers filling the nose. For coverage to the stern, the remaining two small lasers are mounted to the rear and tied directly into the targeting systems, giving the pilot extreme accuracy in his rear field of fire. The compact laser systems are also well-suited for a ground-attack role, while the presence of sixteen heat sinks means the Corsair can continuously fire both large lasers and fire the medium and small lasers with negligible heat buildup.[4

History
The Corsair was originally introduced as a means to replace the horrific losses suffered by the Star League Defense Force following the end of the Amaris Civil War. A working prototype of the Corsair had already been produced when the SLDF approached Wangker Aerospace for an easy-to-refit Aerospace Fighter, which allowed them to begin full-scale production within months. Unfortunately the original V1 series had serious flaws: the fuel tank would rupture when the craft made turns operating in an atmosphere, the landing gear could not support its weight in an emergency landing, and the life support system in the cockpit was easily shattered. While such faults would have killed most other designs, the positive aspects of the Corsair were so impressive the Star League permitted its continuation while Wangker fixed the issues. The fuel tank problem would be corrected in the V2 series, while the life support issues were hashed out in the V3 through V8 series, with continuing improvements up to the V12 series. Most of Wangker's Corsair factories were located in the Federated Suns, and so when the Star League fell five years after its introduction House Davion managed to seize control of them, with the Free Worlds League capturing a single production line on Connaught. Within five years of the start of the First Succession War however all of these factories had been destroyed, though through salvage efforts Wangker managed to piece together a new line on Axton and keep it open over the centuries of constant raiding. When the Connaught facility was destroyed in the opening shots of the war only a few hundred had been produced for the FWLM, and these eventually fell into the hands of the Principality of Regulus. When the Federated Commonwealth was formed debate raged on whether the Corsair or the Lucifer should be the AFFC's standard medium fighter, and in mock combat trials the Corsair won more often than not.

Overview
Considered to be well armored and fairly well armed, the Lucifer is known for its tight maneuvering and prolonged weapons fire capabilities.

Capabilities
However, numerous issues with cooling, targeting, and communications systems have plagued the design, and the ejection system was removed when the frame was refitted for high-G maneuvers. However, the craft is respected for its anti-DropShip mission and the Lyran Commonwealth has invested heavily in production. When supported by other fighters to fend off enemy fighters, the Lucifer is a very effective machine.

Deployment
This 2609 Lyran version places more armor and three additional heat sinks, at the expense of the LRM rack, in order to increase the combat loiter time necessary for anti-DropShip operations.

History
Nicknamed “The Dragger,” the LCF series was plagued with difficulties from the start. Structural problems forced a full recall just two years after production started in 2526. A year later an issue with weapon cooling required widespread modifications. Despite a host of issues, the craft has been manufactured in large numbers and now is House Steiner’s primary medium fighter.

Targeting & Tracking System: O/P 2500TGFD
Introduction Year: 2579
Tech Rating/Availability: D/C-E-D-D
Cost: 6,025,500 C-bills

Overview
First designed in 2530 for the Star League Defense Force, the Stuka is meant for prolonged battle, boasting 30 heat sinks that allow it to stay in the fight longer.

Capabilities
Though somewhat outgunned by some medium fighters, it has 15 tons of armoring which gives it superior protection, and its Monitor 200 guidance system gives it the maneuverability of a medium fighter.

Deployment
The STU-K5 Stuka carries a mix of weaponry, a Simpson LRM-20 Rack, Holly SRM-4, and a Martell Medium Laser rounding out the payload in the nose. The wings mount two Exostar Large Lasers each, with the final two Medium Lasers facing to the rear.

History
Mostly used by House Davion forces thanks to their monopoly on its construction, the Stukas have proven a thorn in the side of House Kurita forces on many occasions. Lycomb-Davion IntroTech originally manufactured the Stuka from their facilities on Demeter along with a number of other designs, and the Capellan Confederation struck at and destroyed the facilities on Demeter in an attempt to deny the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns supplies of Stukas. While the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces strike was successful, the Confederation's overall goal wasn't met - unknown to the Confederation, Lycomb-Davion IntroTech were constructing a second manufacturing facility on New Avalon when the Demeter facilities were attacked, and the New Avalon plant was already well on its way to being complete. Because of similarities in its design, the Stuka has on occasion been mistaken for a Lightning, a mistake which has often proven deadly.

Overview
While sporting a large and rather unconventional look, the Thunderbird is an old standby design, one of the most common if dated heavy Aerospace Fighters in use across the Inner Sphere in the mid 31st century.

Deployment
Mounting a laser-intensive weapons load, the Thunderbird is well suited to both dogfighting and strafing runs. A FarFire Maxi-Rack LRM-20 in each wing is supplemented by a RAMTech 1200 Large and Maxwell Medium Laser, with further large and medium lasers mounted in the fighter's awkward nose. Four tons of missile reloads give the LRM launchers reasonable combat endurance, while two aft mounted medium lasers discourage pursuit.

History
Created in 2487 as part of an alliance between the Lockheed Corporation of Gibbs and CBM Aerospace of Donegal, the original Thunderbird was built for the LCAF as an assault fighter, well suited to air-to-ground attack and DropShip escort missions in the so-called Age of War. Despite its less than sleek look, the sturdy and dependable Thunderbird spread across the Star League as a number of other manufacturers were able to precisely duplicate the fighter, ensuring the design survived the centuries.

Targeting & Tracking System: Dwyerson Mark XII
Introduction Year: 2941
Tech Rating/Availability: D/X-E-D-D
Cost: 2,367,708 C-bills

Overview
A common sight in House Liao and Capellan Confederation air lances, the Transit has armor and weapons to spare.

Capabilities
Built as a 'Mech-buster and DropShip attack craft, the Transit isn't fast or agile, but is easy to control and has had few loss of control accidents.

Deployment
Based on the Transit Glare, this version offers identical performance and protection to the pilot. The only real change was in the main armament. Unable to secure a steady supply of Improved Heavy Gauss Rifles, the TR-13G instead uses a Long Tom Cannon with three tons of ammunition as its main armament. This massive weapon provided a longer reach and massive firepower against incoming DropShips while not affecting the Transit's traditional ground attack role. The variant use a Endicott Type 28 Maser communications system.

I generally agree with up-armoring standard designs as making sense given the existing rules.  The design and play rules provide increased returns to scale through both damage absorption and crit prevention while simultaneously providing lower returns to scale for weapons through limited slots and free heat sinks.

The Hydaspes is my personal benchmark for a well-designed published heavy ASF.  I'm not aware of anything better.

The Lucifer variant that drops the LRM-20 for ARMOR to turn it into a DropShip killer is up there...  ^-^

Apparently, the R20 with 23 tons of armor on a 65 ton frame.  The 23 single heat sinks is plausibly a bit excessive since all the forward facing weapons can only generate 20 heat.  It would be dominant if scaled up to 100 tons.  As-is, a medium fighter that can play with the heavies.

Here it says "3 additional single heat sinks".  My TR3039 agrees.

I came into this thread expecting to complain about too much armor jacking up BVs but then I compared all the examples to the canon versions of those fighters and I'm learning that the problem isn't necessarily that "these fighters don't have enough armor" it's really just that "building these fighters different in literally any way is better than the canon versions", good grief.

The rules have evolved more than the original designs.

These armor layouts worked for Aerotech 1, probably.  I feel like Aerotech 2 introduced damage threshold rules without considering the armor conversion from AT1 to AT2.

It's not even all about armor, some of these things are so overgunned for their ability to use them they make a Hellbringer feel inadequate.  It's not like a fighter can just lose a wing and take the W for heat management along the way.

Good point.  That is also weird.  I see little point in having wing weapons when the nose and aft arcs cover pretty much everything.  I can see them being helpful if weapon limits in the nose became an issue and that's about it.

Hellbringer?  You're not overgunned until you're at least at Nova levels...  ::)

Back on topic, bricks are really the right way to go.  THAT's how you take down DropShips...  ^-^

I like filling out wings with machine guns or small lasers.  They are mass efficient, add substantial short range damage in aggregate, and can provide point defense at longer ranges.  Thus,  Roc, Devilbane, Workhorse---all bricks with one or two longer range weapons and massed point defense weapons in the wings.

Yep... point defense counts when you're taking down DropShips (at least canon ones)...  ^-^

So, to be clear, or at least, to clear up by asking...
How does SI govern the true starting mass and weight of any Aerospace Fighter, let alone an Aerospace OmniFighter?

Specifically my Vikingr design.
307 AV of Clan FA seemed great.
Then someone posts some finally decently well armored IS builds.

I then chose to openly declare that:
1- Vikingr uses EA, or Endo-Aluminum.
2- Now I understand and realize this claim can be declared as a violation or not later, however:
3 - Is SI for a 90 Tonner auto set to 9 Tonnes baseline? And it's Tonnes in metric, not tons, which is Imperial / US.
4 - If the SI of said above Vikingr IS set to 9 tonnes, does the half-weight clause of EA, again, Endo-Alu, for short, have a rules based legal permission then?

5 - I ask because...
6 - 5 Tonnes of Fusion reaction mass won't get you far for long.
7 - 10 Tonnes base, with two gyro-slung auto-rotational 5 tonnes each fuel pods with a max of three separate 20 tonnes four + shaped gyro-mounts seems the only way.

?_ - Or am I just not grasping normal Aerospace rules "JUST" yet?
?? - Also, how much AV is the basic chassis frame and cockpit overall?

Simply put:

- Vikingr:

 - 307 AV C-FA
 - 393 AV C-FA w/ C-EA
(C-FA is Clan Ferro-Aluminum, C-EA is Clan Endo-Aluminum)

? How much added AV is there for the AeroFighter?
Also, if FA and EA are so great...?

Why not look into ET and AT?
- Endo-Titanium, and various alloys
- Ferro-Titanium, and further various alloys

?

Or am I just that clueless on BattleTech's AeroFighter and AeroSpace rules?

Thank you.
Please advise.

I thought the question was clear.
Why would I be asking such a context requesting text post without good reason?

1.  There is no such thing as Clan-Endo-Aluminum.   Are you trying to say your using Endo Structure on a fighter?
Fighters DON'T have internal structure tonnage.

2.  IS "Value" for any fighter is the GREATER of EITHER Tonnage/10 Round Up,  OR,  Safe Thrust.
So 90 Ton fighter going 5/7 is SI 9 for the Tonnage.   30 Ton fighter going 10/15 is 10 SI for the Thrust.

3.  You seem a little clueless on ASF Construction Rules, but these things happen.  ;)

I feel that the sacrifice in some firepower for a lot more armor is absolutely worth it since threshold crits heavily impact an aerospace unit's combat effectiveness

Code: [Select]
Centurion CNT-1DA
Safe Thrust: 8
Max Thrust: 12

Code: [Select]
Cheetah F-10A
                           Armor
                           Value
     Nose                    51
     Wings                 31/31
     Aft                     15

Code: [Select]
Chippewa CHP-W10A
     2 LRM 15
     2 Large Laser
Heat Sinks:                   25                     15

                           Armor
                           Value
     Nose                   101
     Wings                 81/81
     Aft                     81

Code: [Select]
Corsair CSR-V12A
Armament:
     2 Large Laser
                           Armor
                           Value
     Nose                   101
     Wings                 63/63
     Aft                     53

I get your goal but forgive me as I nitpick the heck out of a few of these as examples.

1.  Ouch, the Centurion got SLLOOWWW.  It's going to need all that armor now since its not really going to be able to fly "circles" around bigger fighters.
At best I might have considered dropping 1 MP but not 2.

2.  What is the goal w/ these armor loads on the Cheetah (or any of them really) ??   Did Threshold rules change since I last read them??
These are 3025 era fighters which means 41 for the bog standard ML should be the primary goal your going for but everything is either above or below that.
What does a 4 point hit that those 31 point wings are saving you from?

3.  DOH, 1 HS short of firing both the LL & LRM at range?  You could have easily found a ton to make that work.
How many LPLs are out there to be shrugging off those 81 point hits?

4.  Ouch,  the Corsair lost its ability to do PD.
The mediums I could see, rear guns, sure, but the SLs allowed a squadron to be a mobile AMS of sorts from what I understand.
And for what?   Ability to take Clan ML hits on a 3025 machine?   Ability to absorb an 11 point hit to the nose?

Sorry, I like the idea of better TH #s w/ more armor & dropping useless guns but these don't actually come across as really optimized which I would think was the intent.

If I'm mistaken & the rules have changed then disregard all comments about the chosen armor levels :)

that "building these fighters different in literally any way is better than the canon versions", good grief.

Too many fighters have far too many guns & really bad brackets for firing patterns.  IMHO

I love the Corsair w/ its twin-LL in the nose because it avoids one of the biggest pitfalls I see in ASF design, and that is sticking LONG range guns on EACH wing, when, the reality of getting an enemy to be in line with both wings at LONG range is pretty rare really.
The wings only overlap in a single row of hexes so you have to be dead on in a straight line to get them to connect, or am I mistaken, but I don't think I am.

Wing guns, should basically be nothing but MLs with just enough to bracket either together or with just some part of the Nose guns.

For example, a Baby-Stuka, with LL & L15 in the Nose & Pairs of MLs in each wing.  A total of 14 SHS will allow both Nose guns, or either Nose w/ 1 Wing, or, both Wings all to be able to form fire patterns.

Stuff like the Hellcat, Eagle, or Stingray would all have been better w/ twin LL/PPC in the Nose instead of triple guns w/ 1 in each wing.

Saving some tonnage that way & dumping it into enough armor to fix any "odd" layouts would be my method v/s just making everything PPC proof.
The ML, MPL, c-MLs, & IS/LL all seem to be far more common than 10 pointers at least outside some of the top end clan machines.

I thought the threshold was location armor value divided by 10 rounded down, so a location needs at least 50 points of armor to keep a medium laser from causing a threshold crit.  Am I missing something?

Agreed w/ Daryk,  I'm pretty sure its round up.

21 points to stop a small laser
41 to stop a medium
etc etc

Well, that took less time than I feared!  8)

TW page 239 says this:

I started thinking of this project & my favorite Davion fighter trio.

To me its hard to imagine a "fix" to the Corsair-V12 when it comes to the idea of "Up-armor for threshold"
It already packs 13.5 tons of armor onto a 50 ton frame for a smart layout of 73-50-43 which is frankly pretty awesome.
That said, in a world of MPLs in the SL era or 3050s I might do a couple small tweaks.

1.  Swap the Wing Mediums & Rear Smalls & drop 1 medium.
2.  Add 1 ton of armor to bring the totals up to 81-53-45

It doesn't do much but it does give you better protection against IS Grade Pulse lasers in the Nose/Wings.
It has a rear gun to keep Lights honest w/o overdoing it & puts all 4 SL forward for a bigger anti-missile defense in the SW Eras.
And really, the Twin-LL are all you need "Offensively" w/ this thing, they just work.

The Stuka on the other hand suffers from my whole "long guns in the wings" thing & could really benefit from pulling 1 from each wing & mounting a single laser in the Nose.
Drop the SRM for 2nd Nose ML & you free up 7 tons for added armor.
22 tons doesn't max it out but you can do wonderful things & still have a design that can do most everything the base Stuka can do.
Like give it a 98/92/72 armor layout making it immune to PPC fire from every angle but the rear that is immune to LL fire.
It also nicely matches the fire brackets to always have 3 LL firing with either 2 ML Front, 2 ML Rear, or LRM20 front.
That's almost taping down the trigger efficient.

I can't really suggest much for the Sparrowhawk, other than just changing the armor layout.
At 38/24/34 I can say that I hate the layout for sure, lol.
The first thing I'd do is move 3 from the Rear to the Nose so that your front is ML proof w/o adding any armor.
You could give up the Smalls maybe but your still not going to get the armor thick enough for medium laser protection all around.
But you could go 41/27/41 & ensure that stuff like a Thrush being behind you isn't fatal while still covering that front when your tailgating a Slayer.
