Another Naval Design Requirement
« on: 30 August 2015, 12:07:51 »
Again going for Trinary's story here

http://bg.battletech.com/forums/fan-fiction/au-clan-history-%28post-3062%29/  where there's a very different war against the Society, one far less destructive and one that leaves many Clans changed a new 'WarShip' is required

East Indiaman Class Armed Merchant Ship

With a rapidly growing presence in the Inner Sphere with the formation of the Dominion as well as the Wolves, Falcons and Adders establishing permanent factories and orbital facilities the redoubtable Carrack seemed to be everywhere, moving around Clan holdings or between the Inner Sphere and the Homeworlds.

Unfortunately for all their massive size the Carrack is a vulnerable ship and with roughly three quarters of the class being the dedicated Merchant Carrack which trades their heavy Naval Weapons for increased cargo space the ships and their valuable cargo were vulnerable to attack.

When the CDS Durance was attacked, boarded and captured and her cargo stolen by ‘rogue elements’ within the Draconis Combine along with the threat of attack from other Clans saw the Shark’s develop the need for a better armed and protected transport that could see off an armed threat as well as establishing a more coherent doctrine for moving high value cargoes.

The doctrinal approach was simple, the re-introduction of convoy’s being the main thing instead of independent sailing for Carracks.  Whilst it slowed delivery slightly, a few Carrack’s travelling in groups was far more risky to engage.

The second approach was the development of a more heavily armed version of the Carrack that was capable of engaging the typical craft used in raiding roles, the East Indiaman.

In Terran history the East Indiaman was a large armed merchant ship that gave up some cargo space to carry better weapons to defend itself against marauders and was more strongly built than the standard merchant ships of the time.  Taking the standard Carrack and decreasing the cargo capacity to not only increase thrust but increase the weapons load and hull armour so the East Indiaman could fend off or at least discourage a hostile WarShip with its convoy mates whilst still also carrying a moderate amount of cargo.  The East Indiaman's internal bays were also enlarged, allowing it to carry ten Aerospace fighters but space limitations meant that fighters no heavier than 35 tonnes could be carried and launched.

Another use was found for the ship save that of convoy escort, by squeezing in a Lithium Fusion battery although the ships engine's could not be coaxed to produce more thrust the East Indiaman found use as a priority freighter a ship that would carry high value cargo’s that needed extra protection, this varied from foodstuffs for worlds suffering shortages to valuable ores and in one case several dozen pens with Ghost Bear’s in them.

The Scientists and Engineers worked hard to ensure that the new ship would be visually near indistinguishable from a Carrack with extensive use of sliding panels and retractable weapons but after other Clan’s voiced their dislike of this ‘sneaky’ and ‘dishonourable’ way of hiding weapons it was agreed that all Clans who had East Indiamen in service would travel in Clan Space with their weapons exposed when in orbit over a world and their IFF’s would transmit a sub identification that would alert ships with the correct data as to their true nature, this of course was not shared with the Houses of the Inner Sphere and only Clan IFF’s would detect the sub ID.

Apart from the Clan bickering about the design there was also the problem of crewing them.  When the first East Indiamen were launched they were seen as a punishment posting for their military crews and Trials of Grievance sprung up almost immediately when crews were assigned to them.  After a year this problem was not solved so Star Admiral Erika McKenna of the Dominion took matters into her own hands.  Transfering her flag to the GBDS Wayward Traveler she took the East Indiaman on patrols where she was deliberately looking for trouble to provoke Pirates or raiders into attacking her ship.  In a four month long patrol along the edge of Dominion space she engaged and destroyed six Pirate dropships as well as crippling the DCS Winds of Heaven in a close quarters engagement where the Draconis Combine ship was lured into short range with the prospect of an easy prize.  The Winds of Heaven was taken as Isorla and renamed the CGB Surprise

Design requirements.

The East Indiaman MUST be based on the Carrack class Merchantship and match it for mass and size

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Carrack

Thrust - 3/5 minimum 4/6 desired.
Space for one point (5 craft) of Aerospace fighters
Improved armour protection and structural integrity
2 Dropship Collars as per standard Carrack.
Improved weapons for engaging dropships and raiding warships.
Cargo space is to be retained with at least 25 - 35,000 tonnes carried
Lithum Fusion battery is desired but not a must, priority to be given to protection, firepower and cargo space.
The heavy weapons fit of the standard armed Carrack MUST remain, these weapons will be on display and are to be expected, removing or hiding them would be an instant give away.

You may fire when ready. Also what do you think of the background fluff?

Not bad fluff: I'd love to see people's work especially if they convert more Carrakcs :D

The only thing: a point of Aerospace fighters is two craft, and a Star is ten ... But that's just nitpicking

Threads like these make me wish I understood Aero construction :(

Ahh my bad :) I thought a point was 5 and a star 25 when it came to fighters.  And yeah I wish I knew how to do it and had the programme to do so.

That's Elementals: fighters and tanks are two per point

Heavy Metal Aero I think, but I'll settle for the book and hand write the stats if I only had some money..

She's perfect!  Those NL-55's give a powerful punch against dropships and are a nice BACK THE F**K OFF NOW! for a Warship and she's as heavily protected as a fair few destroyers and even some cruisers.  Just a thing, how much Cargo space has she got after the upgrade?

Excellent, still a significant amount of cargo and with her LF battery she can deliver important cargoes quicker, thank you for delivering a superb ship!

Re: Another Naval Design Requirement
« Reply #10 on: 17 December 2015, 13:16:06 »
To say the least getting the East Indiaman class into production had been a nightmare would be an understatement.  The Scientists insisted that the design was too expensive, the Warriors said that it was a dishonourable ship and should only be crewed by freebirths but eventually the Inner Sphere tipped the Diamond Shark’s hand.  Raids against Clan Jumpships and even the seizing of a Carrack by ‘pirates’ were intolerable and the Clans needed a counter and insisted something be done.

The CGB Loki was taken out of service and rebuilt and refitted to the new design.  At the cost of a massive amount of Cargo the new ship was far stronger and more capable of defending itself against attackers and because it was built on an existing hull the ship was ready for action within nine months.

The Clans of course still had problems, the Bear’s didn’t know how to use the ship and for another three months she sat idle whilst doctrine was ‘put to paper’ despite the howls of protest from some of the Warrior caste about the tactics being discussed.

It was eventually deemed that those preying on Clan merchant shipping were little more than dark caste bandits who deserved only annihilation, it was this viewpoint that was accepted despite several trials of refusal and grievance about being put on the ship to command it.

In the end Star Admiral Edward McKenna placed herself in command of the maligned ship, she had championed its development and now it was the ship and her ideas Trial of position.  The CGB Loki was renamed the CBG Wayward Traveller and the ‘Carrack’ started usual runs along standard trade routes.  A ‘leak’ from the Watch eventually was to pay off. The Carrack and her two Mule class dropships were reportedly taking on a large amount of geranium ore as well as Mech spares and weapons for delivery to Orestes.  The bait was laid, it only needed a bite.

CGB Wayward Traveller

“Confirmed Star Admiral, the vessel is a DCMS Inazuma class corvette, we are reading her as the DCS Winds of Heaven.  She has not answered our hails and is on an intercept course.”

“Dropships?”

“None attached, the Inazuma class has a small cargo hold, not enough to haul what a Carrack could carry, I assume they are waiting somewhere for her to capture their prize and then carry away what they can from us.”

“Aff, helm, point our stern to the foe and begin a standard burn towards the planet.  Weapons if they do not issue a challenge I want a few wild and inaccurate volleys, we are merely Merchant Caste after all..”

“Aye Ma’am!”

“Hostile ship has increased thrust.”

“Hard on the crew to hold that acceleration.  Time to intercept?”

“Thirty minutes Star Admiral.”

“Helm, I want a sluggish turn to port and hail them again.”

“Star Admiral we are reciving a message from the Winds of Heaven!”

“Let us hear it.”

“Clan vessel, Clan vessel, this is the Warship closing on your stern quarter, power down your drive and surrender or I shall fire into your ship.”

A heavily accented male voice said over the speakers.

“Neg you freebirth scum! The Wayward Traveller will not surrender.  Are you issuing a trial for this vessel?”

“No. I intend to take your vessel, you are outgunned. Surrender and save the lives of your crew and your ship.”

“You will have to take her if you can!”

“Star Admiral they cut communication, detecting a power spike on their weapons.  We are being painted by her sensors…they have a lock.”

“Gun’s open fire once they are in range of our lasers, remember, low powered bursts, helm, keep us in a turn, force them to slow and close.”

“Yes Star Admiral!”

DCS Winds of Heaven

“Stubborn woman, very well, once we are in range put a shot into her stern, its only a Carrack so we’ll have to hold our big guns back.”

“Sir, they have targeted us and weapon mounts are tracking.”

“Stubborn but brave, they can’t outrun us and they can’t outgun us.”

“They are Clan Sir.”

“Then we’ll give them the deaths they seek.”

“Power spike! Enemy is firing!”

Deep crimson bolts of laser energy flashed from the rear quarter turret of the Clan vessel, but both shots were wild, missing by a hundred kilometres.

“Merchants with guns..easy targets.  Fire one PPC, I want the ship crippled, not destroyed.”

The Wind of Heaven’s return fire was far more accurate, a cyan blue bolt of particle energy crossing the distance between the two ships to gouge a glowing rent in the armour round the Carrack’s single massive thruster.

“Star Admiral we took a hit but the armour held.”

Now came the dangerous part, the Wayward Traveller was far better protected than a standard Carrack, and that would be noticed if she just kept on her course.

“Vent oxygen tanks three and five, engines cut thrust immediately, but keep us in this slow turn.  Activate the training systems, simulate a reactor power spike!”

“Aye aye Star Admiral, venting…now!”

DCS Winds of Heaven

“Good hit guns!  Damage report on target.”

“She’s venting oxygen, we must have ruptured something in her engineering, thrust is dropping and their reactor seems to be fluctuating.

The Captain smiled “Excellent, bring us alongside and prepare to deploy marines.”

“Star Admiral, the enemy is closing.”

“Of course they are closing, they think us helpless and defenceless.  Range?”

“Three hundred and seventy two kilometres,..three hundred..they are firing retro’s and slowing their speed, still bow onto us.”

Edward McKenna nodded, grinning slightly despite herself.  The DCS vessel was arrogant getting this close and she could see it clearly now through the holographic interface on the bridge.

“Open fire at two hundred kilometres, engage her with everything we have.”

“Aff!”

In space the massive Carrack was listing slightly, the Winds of Heaven matching her slow pirouetting turn.

“Energy spike!”

“What!?”

The three turrets for the Carrack’s Naval lasers sprang to life, quickly elevating and turning before firing bolts of ravenous energy at a range where a slow moving target could simply not be missed.  Firing at full power the NL-55’s ripped into the Winds of Heaven’s frontal quarters, gouging white hot rents in her hull.

“Those are not NL-35s!” The DCMS Warship’s XO said, shouting to be heard over the howl of the alert claxon.

“Damage report!”

“N-PPC one is out, sections three and five are open to space, we lost two ER lasers as well!”

“Return fire! Blow that damn thing out of the stars!”

The bow NAC-20 and Medium Naval PPC returned fire, blasting into the Clan warships flank whilst the Clan vessel returned fire, her short ranged large pulse and ER lasers blitzing a torrent of fire whilst the Winds of Heaven started to turn, thrusters burning brightly as she tried to get out of the ambush she found herself in.

“Armour is holding Star Admiral! Cannon’s locked on!”

“Fire!”

Three NAC-20’s, not the usual NAC-10’s of the Carrack fired, their discharge a slight flame in space and blast of gas as the binary propellant was combusted. One shell went under the DCMS ship, another thundered into her flank, punching a four meter wide hole in the hull whilst the third slammed into the turning Corvette’s bridge before detonating with a flash as the multi-tonne shell blew itself and anyone and anything nearby into fragments or metal of lumps of meat.

Deprived of command at a vital moment the Winds of Heaven was subjected to several more laser strikes before the surviving officers of the corvette saw that she was out of control and, due to being taken by surprise was loosing the battle.

With Clan aerospace assets on the way from the world below the ship was in dire trouble and a final volley of laser and autocannon hits were all that was needed to force her surrender.

The Wayward Traveller had taken moderate damage, but her armour had held where it mattered and the ship was still fully operational.  Moving into position alongside the crippled corvette the CGB Wayward Traveller escorted her prize towards the star system’s world and its Dominion holdings.  The crew of the Winds of Heaven were released, but despite protests from the Draconis Combine the ship itself was not and was made spaceworthy again before being taken to Alshain for a full repair and refit and would re-enter service seven months later as the CGB Surprise.

The East Indiaman had more than proved itself in the crucible of battle.

I'll admit, I wanted to keep the SI somewhere in the realm of the original Carrack so she is on the light armor side compared to that 70SI beast above.
With only doubling the SI from 15 to 30 & boosting to FC she is now protection more in the Vincent/Essex range.

Capital AC barrels are laid out similar but are all now NAC20's instead of the mix of 20s & 10s
NL's were upped 1 size for range & # boosted to 3/arc from 2.
Anti-fighter bays & AMS bays were both pumped up for better defense.

The really big change I made was to boost the speed like you wanted.
She can outrun many of the larger ships out there now that would prey on her.

A full star EACH of Fighters & Shuttles gives her some defense & can deploy the Star of Elementals & point of Freeborn Marines that each ship can carry.
She can protect merchant shipping & do some preying on lightly guarded convoys of her own.

PS.  Nice story you got going!
FYI, Naval Lasers do not use guntube like barrels.  They are tubeless slits.
Originally fluffed that way in TRO2750, IIRC, Which is why I didn't mind bumping mine from 2 to 3 per arc.
Figured I'd mention it since the way you said "sprang to life & elevated" gives the "tube" impression I think.
