Work on the FA-380 Mollymawk began in 3010 as a private venture by Jalastar Aerospace to directly compete with rival Wangker Aerospace’s EGL-R6 Eagle. The design specifications drawn up by the project’s lead engineer called for a design much like the Combine’s Slayer with high endurance, both in terms of fuel and ammunition supply, as well as good armor protection and comparable performance to both the Slayer and Eagle.
After some 17 years of development the Mollymawk debuted in January of 3027, in time for the Fourth Succession War, although very few were available for use during the conflict. Sales of the FA-380 have languished ever since its introduction: most experts attribute it to lackluster performance against the competition. The Mollymawk is capable but offers little more than an Eagle. For its part Jalastar seems content to produce a few Mollymawks a year for the mercenary and militia markets and focus on the light aerospace fighter market within the Federated Suns, which it dominates.
The Mollymawk is named for a genus of albatross’s known for their high endurance, low effort soaring, a key feature of the FA-380 with twice the internal fuel capacity of most fighters. For firepower the fighter relies on a just 3 weapons: a Mydron Model A AC/20 autocannon, a ChisComp 43 Special large laser and a ChisComp 39 medium laser. The loadout makes for a powerful punch, assuming a pilot can get close enough; otherwise he must rely on his single large laser. The medium laser covers the rear arc of the fighter, a necessity given its vulnerability to much faster light fighters.
The most frequent buyers of the Mollymawk are Davion house mercenary units that do not have the connections to get the more coveted Eagle and Stuka. Some cross border purchases have been reported, presumably by the LCAF.
