Overview

Beginning in 3088, the Hanseatic League realized that it had a problem. The League had been a long time trading power in the Deep Periphery, protected from the larger political entities of the galaxy in part by distance. The League was simply too far away from the Inner Sphere to be worth attempting to conquer.

In 3088 however elements of the Star Adder Clan began probing the deep periphery to raid the Hanseatic League. They had done this as a means to deal with internal distension with no real intent to invade the League.

The League, however, took the raid quite seriously. They had fought hard and well enough to destroy two Adder units completely, and to destroy a Vincent class corvette, but that remained a fraction of what any Clan had available to bring to bear against an enemy. The League could not withstand a serious attempt by a Clan opponent to invade, and they knew it.

They began a crash research program, using what resources they had to attempt to put together units that could successfully challenge invading WarShip assets.

While this seemed a fool's errant, the World of Blake's use of modified DropShips as "pocket warships" successfully against the navies of the Inner Sphere seemed to hold some promise. Bordello Military Goods on Antwerp had some experience with the construction of DropShips, so they set about attempting to put a pocket WarShip of their own together.

Capabilities

They began with the Manatee. This venerable DropShip design dated back to before the days of the Star League, but it had been serving the League well for centuries as a cargo and BattleMech hauler. Though Bordello had designs on a larger and more capable vessel, modifying the Manatee was considered a way to get experience in building craft intended for space combat.

The modifications themselves they kept quite simple. The Manatees power plant was not modified at all. Its weapon complement and armor remained largely unchanged, with minor revisions performed to support the sole major modification.

Bordello installed a single massive White Shark missile launcher in the nose of the craft. This massive weapon massed more than a BattleMech, and supporting it required removing all four BattleMech bays from the original design. The weapon is so massive that its ammunition eats up over half the original vessel's available cargo capacity.

Because it is not intended to support other units however this is not seen as a hindrance. Indeed, the first crews assigned to the initial test vessel were pleasantly surprised by what are considered to be quite spacious living quarters by League standards.

Deployment

Obtaining the technology to manufacture White Shark launchers and missiles was difficult. Putting them into production proved even more so. The first vessel of the new class, named the HLNS "Siren" took a full decade to produce from conception to shakedown cruise. That cruise showed several issues that required remediation before more could be produced. As Bordello continued to manufacture the standard Manatee, production of the "Siren"-type Manatee remained at approximately 1 a year.

History

A few dozen of these craft were available in 3140. At that time, the Escorpion Imperio began its Hanseatic Crusade, seeking to bring the worlds and assets of the League into its empire.

A lack of practical experience using capital weapons meant that "Siren"-type Manatees performed poorly, at least initially. The White Shark was a powerful weapon, but individual vessels stood little chance of sneaking a missile through a WarShip's available point defense.

They did prove themselves late in the campaign, however, Production was prioritized, so that a full flotilla of ships were available to the Convoy Defense Forces. By then League forces were experienced in the use of coordinating fire and they were able to repel Imperio forces from Antwerp. However, this proved too late to save the League as a whole.

If you're going to build a PWS, you HAVE to have point defenses.  At least get some Small Lasers or Machine Guns on there that are dual use.

Good to know! I'll keep that in mind for the future. Thanks!

No problem!  I didn't want you to be surprised by the first Alamo... :)

I figure fluff wise I'm in the clear. They don't really know what it takes to make a good combat unit, so why should I have to?

Depends on how many records your faction has from the 1st and 2nd Succession Wars.  Those should be all the lessons learned you need...

So this would operate more or less like an early Uboat, which carried ~12 torpedoes and not much else.  Thus this manatee would be great for disrupting shipping by dropping bearings launched missiles at a convoy and then running, sneaking around planets and dropping in and out of the interference hex to engage corvettes/destroyers who cant follow below the interference 'surface'.  For such a task this design is actually really good, though just like the first U-boats the poor speed and performance will quickly get countered by new enemy tactics.
