Talon PWS-DD
« on: 21 February 2011, 20:49:55 »
The talon was originally designed to provide system security and function as a customs enforcement vessels for regional and planetary governments.  The designers focused on giving the ship accurate and long ranged firepower mated to a durable and fast platform.  The primary weapon system consists of four independently directed pairs of barracuda missiles.  The arrangement allows the patrol ship to split fire effectively across a fighter squadron or maximize the potential for critical damage on larger vessels.  Multiple gauss rifles, autocannons, LRM tubes and pulse lasers give the talon staggering conventional firepower as well.  Its massive drives give a peak acceleration of 4Gs while its robust spaceframe supports 90 tons of ferro-aluminum armor.  AMS systems and an aft-mounted screen launcher round out the ship's defensive potential.

Talons are intended to be able to go for extended patrols within their home systems.  To this end, 300 tons of fuel allow the ship to maintain transit speed for over 150 days.  Six passenger cabins are provided for the bay personnel and crew of the ship's shuttlecraft, simultaneously increasing morale and decreasing demands on the life support system.  200 tons of cargo provide more than adequate supplies.  However, several flaws have come to light with the design.

While it has a shuttle to conduct customs boarding operations, it lacks a dedicated marine contingent.  Therefore, some of the crew members must be cross trained for this role.  The lack of dedicated training means that they are unlikely to be able to conduct an offensive boarding operation.  Some forces have adapted to this problem by using small craft with marine quarters aboard, though this is uncomfortable for the troops and takes up additional resources, making this arrangement ill suited to long patrols.  Cutting down on excess crew members and housing the shuttlecraft crew inside the shuttle's quarters to free up bunks has also been tried, with mixed results.

Another issue is that the talon lacks a separate transit drive and is notoriously unstable in atmospheric flight.  Designers intended to craft to remain spaceborne for most if not all of its life, so atmospheric capability was added with the intention of allowing the ship to be built on a planet or for emergency landings.  Therefore, the vessel was optimized for space flight.  In reality, many purchasers of this craft lacked space based maintenance yards and thus resorted to performing routine maintenance at commercial drop ports.  This not only necessitated the rearrangement of the ship's internal arrangement for landing, but also resulted in unexpected wear and tear on the spaceframe.  Luckily, the mostly spaceborne existence of the talon results in overall lower maintenance needs that cannot be performed by the crew.

The talon patrol vessel was well received by its targeted customers, though the navy has not placed any orders beyond a pair of vessels for testing purposes.  It has been found that the barracuda launchers perform poorly at penetrating the AMS batteries seen in modern military vessels and escort craft.  To this end, two new variants of the talon have begun field testing.  The first variant replaces the 4x2 barracuda launchers with 2x3 white shark launchers.  The increased durability, damage, and penetrative power of the white sharks more than make up for the decreased accuracy in combat against proper assault dropships and warships.  An additional pair of large pulse lasers were added to the nose as well.  Unfortunately, the extra passenger cabins were removed to better fit with navy doctrine, though cargo space was significantly increased.

The second version utilizes the new swordfish subcapital missile.  Three sets of 3 swordfish are mounted in the bow, providing a more than 100% increase in capital firepower.  A major redesign was necessary in order to fit these launchers, so the original quad gauss rifle turret was replaced with a dual heavy gauss rifle mount, while cargo was significantly decreased.  Power distribution and heat dissipation systems also required an upgrade to support the finicky new weapons.  Analysts have projected that despite this increased firepower, the greatly reduced range will limit the so called "torpedo bomber" variant in practical application.
