Sting of the Scorpion

A full binary of Clan Goliath Scorpions have landed on-planet, boldly challenging for the rule of the surrounding system. Two companies of Draconis mechs from the 5th Sword of Light stand to defend their home. However, less than one company of these mechs are readily operational. Due to lack of resupply and remoteness of their planet, the Draconis forces are also armed with somewhat outdated mechs and equipment… but if they could buy enough time to get both full mech companies up and running along with vehicle assets, the tide of the battle just might be turned against the invaders.

DEPLOYMENT

Draconis Forces deploy quite closely amidst the light woodland, the Scorpions star deploy across the entire width of the terrain.

TURN 1

The Scorpion Star advances cautiously towards a shallow crossing in the river, the Star Captain moved seperately from the rest of the unit, advancing quickly down the right flank, hidden by a small mountain range. The scorpion Hellbringer slowly advances down a mountain towards the river, unleashing a single PPC shot towards the Draconis tanks on the horizon, and they prove to be just out of the weapon’s reach, much to the concern of the tank crew.

Both Draconis Lances advance quickly under the cover of light woods, staying in tight lance formation, jump capable mechs making use of their ability to glide through the woodlands. Supporting PPC carriers travel at full speed towards the woodland’s edge between the lances.

TURN 2

Visual contact is made between the two forces as the first Scorpion mechs traverse the river, issuing challenges to their prey. They open fire with their weapons, careful to keep heat levels down. The Burrock heads the attack, letting loose with its massive Ultra Autocannon but missing. Similarly, the Stormcrow, having quickly crossed the river and now on a small hilltop, unleashed its ultra autocannon but also missed. The Warhammer IIC and Hellbringer slowly lumber across the river, while the imposing Savage Coyote comes around the mountain side and makes contact with the Draconis units.

TURN 3

The Scorpion mechs advance towards the Kurita units, letting loose with a mix of clan lasers and ultra autocannon fire. The Warhammer IIC has finally traversed the river, while the Hellbringer bursts from the woods to engage the entire Draconis fire lance at close range.

The Draconis command unit, seeing their commander charge the clan leader, likewise fly on their jump jets to engage the other Scorpion mechs and tie them up. Only the Dragon holds the line at the woodlands with the Schrek PPC Carriers, providing fire support.

A sinister voice encroached onto the commline.

“This is star captain Rivas Ben-Shimon of the Goliath Scorpions; I challenge the leader of your pitiful forces to single combat”.

After accepting the clanner’s challenge, Sho-sho Oni Yamato angled his Grasshopper towards the oncoming Scorpion Mech, a fearsome Savage Coyote. Even with their outdated equipment, his forces still outnumbered the Scorpions almost 2 to 1, and the massed fire at their disposal could be the key to the Dragon’s victory. Flicking his commline back to the friendly channel, he quickly alerted his forces.

“Warriors of the Dragon, let these invading barbarians feel the dragon’s flame! Concentrate your fire on the closest incoming enemy”

Startled by the speed at which the Savage Coyote now advanced towards him, he charged his Grasshopper forward towards it, jump jets blazing at full tilt, hoping to perhaps slow the enemy’s inexorable advance. At the apex of his mech’s jump, he let loose with a carefully aimed large laser blast and LRM flight, scoring precise hits on the Savage Coyote’s arms.

“Engaging –…“

The return barrage from the Clan mech cut Yamato’s last transmission abruptly. An enormous, blurred cloud of missile and laser fire enveloped Yamato’s Grasshopper. Hidden within dark clouds, countless fiery explosions bloomed to life, enveloping the entire mech. The now black, ravaged Grasshopper crashed lifelessly to the earth, its tattered armor crumpling easily from the impact. Inside the cockpit, amidst shattered glass and smoking, destroyed equipment, Yamato hung lifelessly from his restraining straps, three large wounds to his torso and his entire head covered in blood.

Charging on jump jets, Yamoto manages to land a large laser hit and an LRM flight onto the Star Captain’s mech, but the return barrage proves deadly. Mid flight, the Grasshopper is shredded apart by the combined damage from and ER PPC, ER medium laser, LBX-10 autocannon, and two flights of Heavy Explosive ATM missile rounds (around 20 missiles hit for 60 damage). Four separate hits to his cockpit ensured that the force commander was certainly out of the action, the Grasshopper a smoking ruin on the battlefield.

The Javelin and Stinger jump jet as a pair onto a hilltop to engage the advancing Stormcrow and hopefully stall its advance towards the heart of the Draconis line, however their weapons fire goes astray, their mechs’ heat levels slowly rising. The Stormcrow returns fire with its huge autocannon but misses, but managed to score a hit on the Stinger’s left torso with an ER medium laser, stripping all its armour on the location.

The Dragon and Schrek PPC Carriers hold their position and unload all their fire toward the advancing Burrock. Ultra autocannon 5 rounds and a pair of medium lasers from the Dragon tears armor from The Burrock’s right torso and arm. The majority of PPC shots go astray, with only a lone shot managing to blast into the Burrock’s right arm. The Burrock, advancing firmly, snapped off a shot per arm, with each weapon aimed at a separate Schrek. Both shots miss however, churning up dust clouds about the tanks.

Only several hundred meters to the right, the Draconis Fire Lance unloaded all its weaponry into the advancing Hellbringer. Guns blazing but nerves jangling, the Draconis forces hit with, amazingly, only a single large laser. The Hellbringer shot both PPC’s, missing with one of the blasts.

A pair of azure bolts jolted across the battlefield, and in a moment, one of them precisely struck the Katana in the cockpit. Serenely, the bolt continued its course through the back of the mech and into the blue sky, and the Katana slowly toppled backward like a felled tree.

TURN 4

“I am the acting commander now, all units fall back and regroup!! Ground support, we hold this line!” Lin Ushida barked, temporarily silencing the chaos over the Kuritan comm-line.

The simulataneous and sudden loss of both lance commanders was a massive shock to the morale. From her primary visuals, Ushida could see that some of her lance had taken to the order; the Stinger and Javelin were already using their jump jets to retreat and lay some covering fire. But on the other side of the battlefield, the remnants of Fire Lance were rooted to their position, and the Jenner…

“For the Dragon!!” – Ushida heard on the commline, as the berserk Jenner pilot charged towards the Hellbringer, using every ounce of its jump jet’s power, and every single one of its weapons blazing. The inside of its cockpit must have felt like the flames of Hell.

The ground rocked violently just in front of Ushida’s mech, snapping the mechwarrior back to the immediate danger ahead. The marauding Burrock had let loose with its massive autocannon and barely missed again.

“Ground support, concentrate all fire on the Burrock - It will not survive the Dragon’s fury, not at this range!”

Remnants of Draconis Fire Lance unload their weapons onto the Warhammer IIC, most shots going wide save for a few laser and autocannon-5 hits, peppering its torso. The Warhammer IIC returns fire with its 2 ER PPCs, scoring one devastating hit on the Mauler’s midscetion. Berserk Jenner pilot charges at the now retreating Hellbringer (trying to cool off). All weapons blazing, only two of its medium lasers hit the Scorpion mech’s arm and torso. The Hellbringer hit with its medium laser, threatening to sever the Jenner’s right leg with a single shot.

The Star Captain wades through the flaming wrekage that was once the Draconis commander’s Grasshopper, towards the Schrek PPC tanks. An ER PPC shot hits the side of the closest Schrek, which withstands the hit and remains operational.

Lin Ushida of the command lance holds her ground as the Stinger and Javelin retreat with their weapons firing.

From the combined fire of her Dragon and four accurate PPC hits from the Schreks, the Burrock’s right arm and torso explodes spectacularly from an ammunition hit. The Burrock staggers and crashes to the earth, but not before unleashing a devastating round of Heavy Medium Laser fire. To the horror of Ushida and the Ground Support, 3 Heavy medium laser shots barely go wide of the Dragon, but the fourth manages a hit right on the Dragon’s head, destroying the entire cockpit and its life support systems. Ushida was no more.

TURN 5

Chaos in the Draconis ranks as Ushida’s tortured scream is heard over the commline. Jenner and Mauler engage the Warhammer IIC in close quarters, reverting to physical attacks and firing any other available weapon. The remaining Dragon retreats towards the hills in panic, twisting its torso and snapping off an Autocanon-5 shot towards the distant Stormcrow, but missing.

The Jenner fires all its weapons into the back of the Warhammer IIC, tearing all armour off, but inflicting no internal critical damage to the huge mech. The Mauler also unloads all its weapons at the Warhammer IIC, but does not breach the heavy armour. The Mauler reels from the blow of an Ultra Autocannon-20, ER PPC, and 4 medium pulse lasers from the Stormcrow and Warhammer IIC. The Jenner attempts to kick the Warhammer IIC from behind, but flails its leg wide and falls to the ground violently.

The Schrek PPC Carriers, now without the support of Lin Ushida’s Dragon, start reversing and begin a retreat while still firing every weapon at the rapidly approaching Savage Coyote. 3 PPC hits to the torso are not enough to concern the clan mech’s heavy armour, and immediately the tank crew desperately clamber out of the vehicles as quicly as possible, but it is too late.

Ben-Shimon fires an ATM launcher at each tank, and the heavy explosive rounds make short work of them. The missile clusters hit the fuel tanks of both vehicles, violently reducing them to flaming wrecks.

The Stinger and Javelin continue to retreat on their jump jets, snapping off weapons fire but to no avail, while evading laser fire from the smoking, one-armed Burrock limping after them.

TURN 6

The Jenner, Stinger, and Javelin are almost at the edge of the map, retreating as quickly as possible but firing off SRM and medium laser shots as they do so. The Dragon has already left the battlezone. The Mauler stands its ground and is completely destroyed by the combined fire from the Savage Coyote and Warhammer IIC, taking a grand total of 110 damage. It is consumed by a mix of ER PPC, Pulse laser, and ATM missile fire.

“E-jec-ting!!”

The Mauler’s head shot into the sky, sending its pilot to relative saftey. The rest of the mech exploded into flames, its body falling apart like children’s blocks.

TURN 7

The Stinger, Javelin and Jenner successfully escape from the battlezone, with the Scorpion mechs in close pursuit. The Jenner in particular dashes behind the cover of a small hillside, securing its safety from the fire of the persuing Scorpion Hellbringer. In total, four Draconis mechs successfully flee from the battlezone.

“Let the surat scum flee like the cowards they are, all units report in.”

Star Captain Rivas Ben-Shimon slowed his Savage Coyote to a stall, surveying the damage his unit had wrought. It had been too easy to destroy this Draconis unit, with their antiquated equipment and inferior battlefield skills. Perhaps this was why the particular unit was sent to face his Command Star, just to slow them down momentarily… what a dishonor for his Command Unit, having to face such an inferior freebirth rabble! Cursing, he hissed venom into the comm-line.

“Gather up any survivors and send them to be part of the laborer caste. Hopefully there will be worthy warriors amongst the rest of their ranks.”

Ben-Shimon knew the battle for the planet was far from over.

Love it  ;D

The First Proserpina Hussars were eager to fight the Smoke Jaguars, but the commanders assigned them to attack worlds held by Clan Nova Cat instead. They faced a hard fight on Kanowit, but took Mualang by winning a round of miniature golf. This obviously minimized further losses.

Excellent report.
Looking forward to more.

Those Clanners tore into the snakes something fierce. I would have thought the numbers would have seen them good.
But it wasn't meant to be.

Its really strange whenever we take 5th Sword of Light its as if all commanding officers are cursed to be fried in their cockpits  ;D

yeah, quite the opposite of the fiction written about them.

I really do like this shot.

The lance running towards the Loki amuses me a heck of a lot.

 :D

They looked nervous, bunched together shoulder to shoulder (even the jenner!)... and the accuracy in their massed fire was appalling, as if the "nervousness" in their formation transferred over  ;D

Nice battle. The Combine sure got unlucky there, I expected a much better showing.

I liked the format as written, especially the snippets of fluff to really engage the reader. Very cool!  :)
