Title: Infantry Formation
Post by: Highlander_Incoming on 16 October 2021, 22:23:08
Hi,
As my group is slowly developing and been looking into Infantry a bit more, I tend to play Inner Sphere.  So, my question on this, with the understanding of a Lance is 4 Mechs or 8 vehicles.  How many infantry bases would be in a lance?  Or if referring to page 124 with Force Building, you can have up to 6 infantry platoons per a company?

Infantry are arranged Squad < Platoon < Company < Battalion...etc.

A standard IS Goot Squad is 7 soldiers. Alpha Strike doesn't have a great representation for this.

A standard IS Foot Platoon is 4 Squads (28 soldiers) Represented by a single infantry base.

A standard IS infantry Company is 3 Platoons (84 Soldiers) and would be represented by 3 Infantry bases.

Motorized and Jump infanty I believe have slightly different squad/Platoon sizes but a platoon of them would still just be a single base so it's a bot irrelevant.

Representation of your squads can be as few as one Soldier of the appropriate type on the base, to as many as you want. I personally use 3 individuals per base.

I believe a vehicle lance (aka platoon) is still only 4 vehicles but someone better versed can feel free to correct me on that.

What alzer said. The Free Worlds League use 6 lught vehicle lances, and so do comstar ans the word of blke (and the clans use multiplea of 5) but 4 is the base multiplier for vehcicles as well as mechs for normal inner sphere forces.

Jump infantry come in platoons of 21 guys, not 28.

organizationally speaking a mech or vehicle lance is equivalent to a single infantry platoon.

in terms of actual game use though, since infantry are cheaper and weaker than most everything else, it is fairly common to deploy them in groups of 3-4 platoons (a companies worth.) as a maneuver element. in fact it is not uncommon to see 3-4 such companies (a full battalion) deployed in a game list if the player is aiming for a combined arms approach.

For Campaign play as the evil GM  >:D I am, I use a cheap battalion of infantry in terrain (any) to harass my players as they learn on how to strategically ignore unnecessary fights.

We play AS with 1 Base = 1 Squad.

So 3-4 bases per Alpha Strike card?
