  • And I think it's gonna be a long, long time...
So, looking at the current books, I see that Alpha Strike Commander's Edition appears to have replaced the original book, though I may be wrong on that.  It includes special abilities for things like WarShips (which I figured out searching for some of the special abilities on the Alpha Strike cards for WarShips), but doesn't include Alpha Strike rules for WarShips, which appears to be in the Alpha Strike Companion.

Therefore, if I wanted to get started with Alpha Strike, and specifically, beyond the usual BattleMechs, be able to play using LAMs, ASFs, DropShips and WarShips, would I pick up those two books, or are other books required?

AS:CE covers all of those except WarShips, but only as they maneuver over a ground battle. If you want to maneuver spacecraft around an abstract radar map you need Alpha Strike Companion, and that requires the original Alpha Strike for play(though AS:CE should work, as it was designed to replace both earlier books).

If you want to maneuver aerospace units around any kind of tactical map(hexed or otherwise) where things like firing arcs have any real effect, then you need to wait for the upcoming edition of IntOps and the updated Battleforce rules.

Sounds like I'll be waiting, then.  I mean, sounds like I'll need those two books anyway, but then it sounds like I'll have to wait for the updated IntOps, too.

Is the upcoming IntOps have like Alpha Strike in space? Where does Strategic Operations fit in?

My updated StratOps has advanced aerospace combat, operations and construction rules, but drops the Battleforce stuff entirely.

IntOps is going to be the new home for Battleforce, presumably to include the full Battleforce space combat rules(which I tend to refer to as Battleface). Since Battleforce uses the same stats as Alpha Strike, Battleface is basically going to be what you want if you your aero units to do more than fly directly over a ground fight or move around an abstract radar map.

StratOps is the source for the full advanced aero combat using full-sized record sheets instead of AS cards. Basically, it's the Total War of space combat, though that metaphor is imperfect because you still need TW to play.

So what do I need to play with space units with AS-like cards , and ASFs in squadron units?

When Catalyst put out the Warship cards I was excited to use them but then disappointed when I didn't understand the cards.

Looks to me like you would need current Alpha Strike Commander's Edition and the out of print Alpha Strike Companion (pdf at DriveThruRPG) or Alpha Strike Commander's Edition and wait for the new Interstellar Operations.

And the latter, the new Interstellar Operations, is what you'd need to maneuver them on the map, rather than in abstract space above a ground battle, right?

Assuming it retains the Battleforce space rules that were in older printings of StratOps, correct.

Has anyone used the new Warship/Dropship cards yet? I know they have been out for a few months now. I was just glancing through them again and it made me wonder how the rules and ships hold up.
