is teleportation possible
« on: 20 November 2020, 18:31:19 »
hello i was wondering is teleportation using hyperspace possible in the BattleTech universe  KF drives are basically teleporters that can transport ships between systems and HPG's create artificial jump points so would it be possible to combine the two to create a teleporter that can teleport Battlemechs, people, or anything else smaller than jump ship but bigger than electromagnetic signals an if so what would be its limitations like would it have a Wight or distance limit for example it cant transport anything weighing more than a assault battlemech and it cant teleport people to another star system just planets in the same solar system as the teleporter.

The simple answer is no.

The longer answer: still no.

BattleTech's hyperspace fields require a couple of things to move mass:
1. Fairly flat space-time (gravity below a certain limit - far, far below a planet's surface)
2. A Kearny-Fuchida drive's core to properly shape the jump field (smallest ever built: 2,500 tons)

If the object jumping/teleporting through hyperspace doesn't have both of those things then it arrives mangled and destroyed by the uncontrolled hyperspace field.

Intelligible radio signals can be jumped through hyperspace from a planet's surface to a planet's surface, but that happens inside what's basically a fusion reactor and doesn't involve any mass transfer.

The closest you could get to "teleporting" close to a target planet is aiming a JumpShip to an L-1 Lagrange pirate point, which could be only a few hundred thousand kilometers (a few hours) from the planet. Normal system transit might last days or weeks from the proximity limit and standard jump points otherwise.

Strategic Operations has a couple of chapters description hyperspace operations in both rules and fictional terms.
