Can a Jumpship jump another drive-less Jumpship?
« on: 10 January 2021, 02:19:02 »
I've just been thinking about the problems of the K-F drives. If one fails, and can't be repaired is that Jumpship a write off, doomed to stay where it is forever? Or can they remove the K-F drive, tether it to another Jumpship and move it?

You can't jump another jump core, at least not in working order. You'd need to break it up pretty fine, to prevent the crystalline structure interfering with the rescue ship's jump drive.

So either slag the core big time, or cut a hole off the end of the crippled JumpShip and extract the core (probably not as easy as it sounds ...)

The rescue ship needs an internal bay big enough to enclose the cripple - they don't make the sort of jump adaptors that allow a DropShip to cling to a JumpShip and be inside the core that big. Therefore see the Faslane yardship, which is a big-ass cavernous bay with extras.

In fact, the Faslane can act like a portable shipyard, so jumping one of them out to fix the cripple in situ.

As long as someone knows you're there ...

The process for repairing a stranded JumpShip is discussed on Strategic Operations p. 130 in the sidebar with the surprising title of, "Repairing Stranded JumpShips."

Basically, you can ship another KF core to the stranded JumpShip and swap them out. In many eras, this wasn't cost-effective or worthwhile but was done more often in the Succession Wars.

The surrounding chapter, Aerospace Technologies, and the chapter Aerospace Operations give some more background on how to build, repair, and salvage JumpShips.
