Bootneck marine combat suit
« on: 01 December 2011, 01:38:54 »
Not a particularly powerful design, but I like the concept. Like my factional IS Standards, this is meant to be an alternative take on that ubiquitous design, although in this case it's a refit rather than meant to be a factory variant to replace the generic version.

As a note, the magnetic clamps are meant to be used to provide a stable firing base for the right arm MG in zero-G, they don't enhance the marine boarding points value. Thanks to the various components, the latter is rated at 5.25, compared to the 3 of a unmodified IS Standard armed with a MG. Obviously the clamps would allow the suit to be used outside of the space combat role, but this would technically be a waste of a specialized design that is technically only available in small numbers given the fluff.

A comprehensive refit of the Inner Sphere Standard, the
Bootneck is a product of Nexus Advanced Performance, a small
Battle Armor repair and modification shop that is based upon
Solaris VII, originally servicing the highly specialized suits of
the gladiator circuits, but now exploiting new business
opportunties with the coming of the Jihad.

The remnants of a mercenary combined arms unit called the
Caan Do Company, Nexus set up shop on the game world in the late
3050s where they began their career in Battle Armor customization
based upon their experience with Inner Sphere and Gray Death
Standards. Further investment in training by enrollment on the
Technical Program at the Outreach Mercenary Training Center for
key personnel greatly improved the company's skillset and they
established a reputation of innovative and effective designs for
gladiator combat.

After the Blakist invaders were forced from Solaris VII,
Nexus decided to turn their skills to the military market.
Recognizing that they would be unable to compete in sales of
general combat suits, they decided to concentrate on producing
Battle Armor intended for niche roles. Mostly based upon refits of
the commonly available Inner Sphere and Gray Death Standards, some
production runs where as small as a squad of customized suits for
a specific customer, but others have proven popular with multiple

The Bootneck marine combat suit is one of those designs and
currently sales are outstripping supplies. Taking an Inner Sphere
Standard sourced from any of the available suppliers, the
engineers of Nexus Advanced Performance first stripped off the
armor plating and modular weapon mount. Next, the suit is equipped
with a second battle claw and the entire frame is fitted with an
additional environmental sealing layer. A reverse-engineered Space
Operations Adaptation suite copied from Taurian models is mounted
on the torso, while magnetic clamp modules are installed on the
limbs. Lightened, but tighter fitting armor plates then encase the
chassis, with the final fitting of a fixed machine gun on the
right forearm, an anti-personnel weapon mount and cutting torch on
the left, and a shoulder-mounted multi-spectrum searchlight
rounding out the changes.

With all the additional equipment, the Bootneck is about an
eighth more expensive than the base Inner Sphere Standard when
configured with a similar machine gun. The customization work and
high demand does allow Nexus to charge a premium on top of the
list price, particularly for rush jobs, although they're careful
not to alienate customers with too many additional costs.
