Cheap Urban Warfare Suit
« on: 19 February 2020, 13:35:48 »
I got this idea for a possible RPG game me and a buddy are sorta planning to run about using cheap but effective battle armor and being testers of it.

Now, my idea was for a BA that doesn't jump it just runs (hypothetically meaning less training of soldiers) and it doesn't mount missiles just machine-guns (to be cheap and easy to replace). What is the unit is really good at is swarming a mech after running out of a building.

Code: [Select]
Thug Urban Warfare Battle Armor
Type: Thug
Manufacturer: Unknown
    Primary Factory: Unknown

Tech Base: Inner Sphere (Standard)
Chassis Type:  Biped
Weight Class: Medium
Maximum Weight: 1,000 kg
Battle Value: 246
Swarm/Leg Attack/Mechanized/AP: Yes/Yes/Yes/Yes
</p>

Equipment                                     Slots      Mass
Chassis:                                               175 kg
Motive System:
     Ground MP:          3                              80 kg
     Jump MP:            0                               0 kg
Manipulators:
Left Arm:            Battle Claw                    15 kg
Right Arm:           Armored Gloves                  0 kg
Armor:                   Standard (Basic)       0      500 kg
    Armor Value:         11 (Trooper)

                                         Slots
Weapons and Equipment         Location (Capacity)   Mass
Machine Gun                   Left Arm     1       100 kg
Machine Gun                   Right Arm     1       100 kg
Magnetic Clamps                 Body       2       30 kg

Cost of 4 man squad: 1,700,200 Cbills
Cost of individual suit: 425,050 Cbills

This is sorta what I came up with. The 'Thug' is an Urban Warfare suit, meant less to take on the Clans than to wholesale mow down infantry with its dual machineguns. The suits are equipped to run at 31kph, which is not great out in the open but in building to building combat it is quite excellent, especially compared to Elementals and Inner Sphere standards which move at 10kph. The one place the suit doesn't skimp on cost is protection, a full 500kg is devoted to giving this suit the same armor protection as the Elemental. The right arm is fitted with an armored glove to help the user open doors and other delicate work, while the left has a full battle claw to hitch a ride or thrash an opponent. Magnetic Clamps are also fitted to help the unit hitch a ride on anything it can to get to the battlefield.

So, cheap and useful or a bit of a boring stinker in the 3080s?

Interesting concept, but I think missiles (or at least something that could be interpreted as an anti-armor weapon, like a man-pack PPC or some gauss rifle) would still be proper for an urban-warfare BA suit.  A couple thousand C-Bills on missiles isn't bank-breaking when your suits are already costing hundreds of thousands of C-Bills a pop.

One armored glove should enable troopers to carry conventional infantry weapons, including heavier support ones like recoilless rifles and disposable MRMs.  At least on personal/role-play scale.

One change I would suggest is a modular mount, so at least one of the arm mounted weapons can be swapped out for a flamer, light gauss, or other situation-appropriate weapon.  Mag clamps might be a bit of an extravagance given the ground speed.  Also, for RP purposes a searchlight might prove more useful indoors as well as at night.
Think about it.  It's what we do.

given it role is to "wholesale mow down infantry with its dual machineguns" maybe you could couple options put it on a light BA frame
2 keep the frame but drop the armor so you could upgrade the firepower to Flamers, GL, Manpack PPC etc..

Wouldn't a true Thug have Support PPCs in the arms and a torso mounted SRM -2 pack moving close to 2 MP on a Heavy suit?

I'd consider having an HMG on each arm for added swarm nastiness, and magnetic battle claws (do they provide XMEC also?). Might have to drop some armour - but given these are beta designs, I can see the techs not caring ;)

Only MagClamps gives XMEC. MagBatClaws only give bonus to swarm attacks and avoiding getting swiped off.

This really reminds me of the GDL Standard suit as if someone dropped the sensors for Mag Clamps & dropped the Omni-Mount for twin MGs
