Design for an NBC environment.
« on: 19 August 2022, 21:59:04 »
Requirements: You're outfitting 3,000 personnel to enter a contagion hot-zone with physical hazards as a relief and stabilizing force.

aka peacekeeping in a plague zone.  You do NOT have the support of a major national government, and your personnel will have limited support and no way back unless or until the virus is contained.

Feral animals, weapons in the hands of crazed or desperate survivors, and inclement weather are assured.

Design the cheapest suit that can fill this role.

tried to do a PAL, but had to resort to a light BA to fit the support systems i wanted.

Extra powerpack and Extended life support so the wearer can operate for most of a day without leaving the suit. heat sensor as a concession to the need to provide additional sensory systems.. can be used to locate survivors, avoid wildlife, etc. and 20kg of mission gear for carrying medical supplies, portable sensor gear, or whatever other items the mission would call for.

it uses Armored Gloves so it can be equipped with infantry weaponry, since you hopefully won't need much more than that to deal with wildlife and most survivors. (and the ones where you do.. that's what mechs and tanks are for)

since it has a lot of spare mass as a light suit, it can equip just about any infantry weapon you want, including some of the man portable support weapons. i did give it 4 armor, since armor is cheap and having 4 points lets it survive being shot by most non-mech scale weapons.

and it costs only 261,750 cbills per suit.

I'm pretty sure I can make a PA(L) work... off to Tech Manual!

Ok... Without the training cost I can get a basic suit under 200,000 (ignoring the training cost, of course):
Code: [Select]
Quarantine PA(L)
Chassis 80 6 50,000
MP (2) 25 0 25,000
Jump Jet (1) 25 0 50,000
2 points Standard Armor 100 0 20,000
Extended Life Support 25 1 10,000
Power Pack 25 1   1,000
2 Armored Gloves   0 0   5,000
Heat Sensor 20 1 15,000
Remote Sensor Dispenser 40 1   7,500
Searchlight   5 1     500
345 5 184,000
55 kg/1 Critical Slot available for Mission Equipment

The movement profile is to enable escape from mobs regardless of terrain.

Other options:
Upgrade Heat Sensor to Improved Sensors for 20K
Replace Armored Gloves with 1 ton of Cargo Lifter capacity for 1K

Truly bare bones is cheaper, not very capable and breaches from a single substantial hit:
Code: [Select]
Chassis 80 6 50,000
1 point Standard Armor 50 0 10,000
Extended Life Support 25 1 10,000
Power Pack 25 1   1,000
2 Armored Gloves   0 0   5,000
180 2 76,000
Leaves 170 kg/4 Critical Slots open.

@Daryk I feel your barebones suit is too barebones but perhaps stripping the jumpjets and sensors off the superior suit would reduce cost by 72.5k and keep the 2 MP, the 2 armour, life support, power and searchlight which I would think is the more mission essential equipment.

You're not wrong, but I was going for the absolute minimum specified by the requiremnts.

Cheapest? I'd have to say good old fashioned MOPP gear with body armor underneath. 3,000 suits of BA would be better off used as combat assets, rather than peace keepers. I'd provide a few squads as a rapid reaction force but not 3,000.
