Elemental Armor (second generation)
« on: 15 July 2020, 10:39:08 »
There's a fair-sized chunk of unused space on an elemental suit, and I was thinking it would make sense for the Clans to upgrade the standard ones as part of the great battlearmor renaissance of the 3060s.  This is what I consider the most natural and straightforward upgrade for the elemental suit: Add a third round of SRM ammo and mount a much more effective Mauser IIC ER laser in the anti-personnel weapon slot.  (And for the machine-gun variant, there is also room to double up on the main weapon!)

I'm pretty sure the laser was an ER Small... Let me double check.

I'm pretty sure the laser was an ER Small... Let me double check.

There's an 'Elemental [Laser]' with Small Laser, and an 'Elemental [ER Laser]' with ER Micro Laser.
Using a ER Small would force some serious design considerations...

There's a fair-sized chunk of unused space on an elemental suit

The reason for the 'missing' 20kg on the Elemental, is that there are some pieces of equipment that don't show up everywhere; for example, MegaMek.
Those used here are;
1 - the Detachable Missile Pack, a 10kg add-on to the SRMs that allow it to be jettisoned during battle and therefore increase the suit's agility (no effect on a non-RPG scale)
2 - the Modular Weapon Mount, a 10kg/1 slot piece of equipment that allows a  BattleArmour-scale weapon to be mounted/dismounted from it on a timeframe of minutes rather than hours. It only allows that for one weapon, so that's why the MG Elemental only has a single when it can fit two, for example.

Likewise, the Auto-Rifle is on the Anti-Personnel Weapon Mount, and can be replaced by other/better infantry weapons without modifying the suit. The rifle is listed as the default because that's what all APWM use under standard rules.

You're right in that the Elemental is not entirely optimized.
(..other than the fact that the entire BA construction rules were literally built around making it the best, but I digress)
A basic 'fix' long-suggested by... I want to say Sabelkatten, but I'm not 100% certain... is to remove the SRM-2, ammo, and DMP entirely, to be replaced with One-Shot SRM packs - basically, instead of two volleys used over two turns, you have two volleys that can still be used over two turns, or alpha'd in one.

I remembered it as being two SRM-2 (OS)'s, but there's room to make them SRM-3 (OS)'s instead, so perhaps there were other changes involved.

IIRC I pointed out that if you remove the DMP the Elemental can carry a OS-SRM6(!) instead of the 2-shot SRM2... Somebody probably pointed out 2xSRM3 makes more sense than 1xSRM6.

My preference is to make the Elemental an "omni" like this.

That's useful background... thanks!!
