==Overview:==
The Mononoke Project began in 3057 by order of Theodore Kurita to
examine suitable "stealth technology" to use against the Clans.
Rather than create a new class of machines, the Mononoke Project's
goal was to incorporate any new technologies they could perfect
into existing machines. The thinking at the time was that stealth
tactics and equipment would offset the Clans' more advanced
targeting systems (and exploit their limited grasp of strategic
wars.)

Underfunded and micro-managed, the project stagnated before the
end of the decade. Only the fanciful reports made by
less-than-sincere officials to the Coordinator's office kept the
program running. Were it not for the greed of one corrupt official
who boasted of "promising breakthroughs" to the Coordinator's
staff so that funding could be increased, the projecy may have
ironically starved to death. The non-existent breakthrough quickly
spread (deliberately) as rumours by the staff and quickly gained
the attention of several high-ranking officials, bringing it to
the attention of the Black Dragon Society.

Never one to waste time in attacking (or in fact-checking) the
Kokuryu-kai staged an immediate assault on the Mononoke Project's
facility in Kuzuu (where it was hoped that the heavy interstellar
traffic would obfuscate the resources the project was consuming).
The assault has been covered up by the ISF efficiently, though the
attack seemed to have been guided by several Word of Blake agents
in Kuzuu's ComStar HPG facility. With Mononoke now an open secret
to the higher levels of all the governments, the Coordinator
quickly secured ComStar assistance as reparations for their laxity
(and with promises of joint development).

==Capabilities:==
The name "Obake" comes from mythological japanese creatures that
seemingly change shape or form. In fact, "obake" means "a thing
that changes" which fits as the Assault unit is based on a
modified Kanazuchi frame that utilizes two modular weapon mounts
in the arms; the main right arm housing the larger of the chosen
weapon systems.

Obake also means "ghost" which fits in with the rest of the
Mononoke (vengeful spirit) Project's developments. To earn that
name, it uses an experimental electronic camouflaging system that
makes the unit, all 2000 kilograms of it, appear (mostly)
invisible. The so-called "mimetic armour" system is only effective
if the unit its protecting doesn't move a lot. Rather than
miniaturize the systems to lighter designs which would no doubt be
flitting about on streams of fire, ComStar engineers suggested
that the larger Kanazuchi frame be fitted instead. It was vastly
slower and less prone to quick movements. It was also large enough
that the imperfect system could take up more space without losing
efficiency.

With an estimated 680 kg load, the Obake usually fields a medium
laser and a light recoilless rifle in its arms. Though both weapon
systems are unsubtle about their firer's location, the Obake's
combat doctrine (and training) emphasizes quick and sudden
repositionings after firing.

==Deployment==
Obake production has grown steadily since the Assault unit's
debut, growing out of Tanadi Computers' and Cosby BattleMech
Research Firm's Kanazuchi facilities. These frames are unarmoured
until they are delivered to an undisclosed assembly line before
being shipped to frontline units. Currently, all pilots are being
screened carefully by the ISF, moreso than normal, as they are
fully aware of the Black Dragons' covetousness and the Word of
Blake's growing jealousy.

Interestingly, for a program cloaked in so much mysticism there
have been no complaints of ghosts by the normally superstitious
Combine workers. This appears to be due to ComStar's conversion to
secularism and the dryness of their presentations and training
sessions with Combine staff.

This, however, does not extend to frontline soldiers. Due to the
secrecy of the project itself, the ISF dispatched teams to smuggle
the suits into DCMS bases throughout the Combine. They were to
send notices only after the cargo was safely in place. Many
regimental commanders would wake up with a handwritten note beside
their pillow notifying them of new weapons to use, with warriors
ready to wield them, appearing right in the midst of their supply
depots. As these first Obake troopers were sworn to secrecy, and
all being relatively new graduates and members of the DCMS, it
wasn't difficult for the ISF to coverly remove their records (in
the meantime) as they field tested their units. This greatly added
to the Obake Warriors's (as they were called) mystique, with some
COs phrasing their orders as prayers or requests. The Obake
Warriors have cultivated this image till today and officially, no
Obake trooper training program exists in any Draconis Combine
academy.

(When the ISF released the troopers' records a year later, all had
assumed that it took that long for the Warriors' backstories to
have been crafted and secured to legitimize their rebirth into
Combine society. Obake Warriors also have dedicated Techs,
expertly trained in the unit's maintenance by ComStar. These Techs
are viewed with a mix of awe, fear, and pity, and within their
unit they have the same social standing as a respected NCO. With
these benefits, it doesn't take much to convince the Techs to
maintain the charade. Several Obake Warriors have also pursued
special operations training after the now traditional "Year of
Rebirth" and conduct "out of suit" missions as well.)

An upgrade to the one above, it ditches the modularity in favour of a stronger consistent payload. Plus, it can squish things with its hand.
