Yes! So I did not leave Clan Nova Cat with nothing. Their first successful OmniMech is the Night Cat, a second-generation OmniMech based partially on the Vision Quest. However, I have not completed the write up of the design. Moreover, I reworked the design to fit with the Gauss Rifle in TRO:GC. I just wanted to give the reworked configurations some time to sit in my head. I’ll share what I have, without the write up.

Night Cat

Clan Nova Cat's next attempt at the OmniMech took them back to their first BattleMech, the Vision Quest. With nods to other Star League 60-ton BattleMechs, the Night Cat's loadouts feature Clan lasers, with the occasional missile system or ballistic weapon. The 'Mech runs rather cool, and could outpace any other Heavy or Assault OmniMech without MASC enhancement until the introduction of the Linebacker. Some of the configurations also mount targeting computers and jump jets.

My original Night Cat was 65-tons, and mounted primarily laser weapons. It was not a cavalry OmniMech, but a trooper OmniMech, with heavy armor and 35-tons of Pod space, but could only manage 64 kph running. It made up for its poor speed with fixed jump jets.

Thanks! I also wrote a Configuration E, mixing an LB 10-X with 2x SRM6s and modest ammo. This was a nod the the Champion (I’m sure you can see homages to the Lancelot, Ostroc, Crusader, and Flashman). With all crit-seeking weapons, Config E did not seem optimal for single combat without assistance, but would be nightmarish if fielded in Inner Sphere. Running, crits, running, crits....

(New) Clan Cloud Cobra First Generation OmniMechs

There is one more Clan influential in early OmniMech development. Clan Cloud Cobra acquired OmniMech technology directly from Clan Coyote through salvage on Priori (FM:WC, p. 32), and possessed several Trinaries by 2868 (FM:WC, p.21). While some of these were salvaged Coyote designs, these OmniMechs were not ideal for their very different, combined-arms tactical doctrine. Clan Cloud Cobra attempted to field small OmniMech support Trinaries in all their Front-line Clusters. As such, the Cloud Cobras favor OmniMechs capable of scouting, redeploying infantry, spotting for AeroSpace forces, anti-aircraft operations, or providing defense for ground structures like airfields and fuel depots. Their first attempt at applying OmniMech technology resulted in an alternative light scout/spotter/harrasser OmniMech, the Spitting Cobra. Their subsequent attempts helped innovate OmniFighter technology, while also ushering in Second Generation OmniMech technology. The results of their efforts produced the second OmniFighter, the Goth, and as well as the Fire Moth, the Kit Fox, and the Hamadryad OmniMechs.

The Spitting Cobra was Clan Cloud Cobra’s first attempt at producing a domestic OmniMech. The Cobras had long been antagonized by Clan Coyote. Whether the Coyotes perceived weakness during the liberation of Babylon, the Cobras’ paucity of BattleMech forces, their detente with Clan Burrock, or some other factor is lost to history. By 2863, Alpha Galaxy had only one operational cluster, but something more valuable at that time - salvaged Coyote OmniMechs taken from Trials on Priori. Ordering their scientist caste to begin their own OmniMech program, Clan Cloud Cobra began by trying to copy the Talaria and Piasa light OmniMechs. Though their scientists came close to replicating many of the systems, it was the Absorption of Clan Mongoose that provided the final piece. Almost seen as an afterthought, the Cobras bid for and won two more intact OmniMechs, a pair of Fanged Badgers, as well as the production schematics.

Rather than recreate the Fanged Badger, they adapted the Badger’s software suite and gyro. With the chassis already completed, the Spitting Cobra began production later that year.

Capabilities

As a first attempt at OmniMech technology, the Spitting Cobra is a modest accomplishment, and represents somewhat of a mid-point in capabilities between the Piasa and Talaria. It is modestly armored with 4.5 tons of standard military-grade armor, can dart between adversaries at speeds in excess of 115 km/h, and mounts 7 tons of Pod Space, all while staying cool in its configurations. However, the Spitting Cobra is lackluster compared with its contemporaries, especially the Talaria and the Terror.  Many Spitting Cobra configurations mount either Target Acquisition Gear or Narc Missile Beacons to aid AeroSpace assets in their strike missions.

The primary configuration mounts a Narc Missile Beacon and a pair of 6-tube SRM launches, all with guided munitions; this configuration is intended to scout and tag adversaries, allowing its Coil Clusters ease in delivering more of their munitions on target. Configuration A mounts an Active Probe, TAG, and over-under slung ER Large Laser and ER Medium Laser. Configuration B can jump 180 meters, and is an anti-personnel variant with a trio of Small Pulse Lasers; it also mounts TAG to aid in ASF strikes. The final variant is a sniper, with a ER PPC and TAG.

Deployment

With a small number of MechWarriors within their touman, Clan Cloud Cobra kept production of Spitting Cobras understandably low. Unfortunately, this did not not help morale of Warriors assigned to the Spitting Cobra, nor did the idea that aiding in ASF strikes would be a mission worthy of great honor. However, running through wave after wave of Coyote raiders with speed and 4.5 tons of armor for protection did win these Warriors some recognition outside their Clan, even if there was little desire to acquire this light OmniMech.

The Spitting Cobra was first and foremost a testbed to allow Clan Cloud Cobra to expand their capabilities. Clan Cloud Cobra’s next attempt, the Fire Moth, was a failure, until the under-arm-slung infantry compartments were removed in favor of more Pod Space, a bigger engine, MASC, and Battle Armor hard points. With the Fire Moth resurrected by Clan Ghost Bear, the Cloud Cobras frequently acquired limited production of the Fire Moth to supplement their light OmniMech capabilities. The Spitting Cobra’s weakness were finally addressed in 2890 when the OmniMech was shelved for the Kit Fox light trooper OmniMech as part of Khan Samson McCloud’s reforms to the Cloud Cobra touman.

In order to maximize Clan Cloud Cobra’s small and honestly dwindling MechWarrior Bloodlines, Khan Samson McCloud instituted changes to the manner in which MechWarrior sibkos graduate. The best and most capable graduates from Cloud Cobra sibkos were immediately given Frontline Galaxy billets, while MechWarriors failing to impress in the Trial of Position would be assigned to reserve units, able to be activated in times of need. While these reserves might never be nominated for Trials of Bloodright, these reserve Warriors provided Clan Cloud Cobra a vital pressure valve they would need in the next few decades of hostilities with Clan Coyote.

At the same time, Khan McCloud realized it was of the utmost importance that the Clan’s Battle and Coil Clusters could maximize the damage they could sustain and deliver, while taking and holding terrestrial objectives their AeroSpace assets could not. In response, Khan McCloud ordered renewed efforts to procure as many Heavy and Assault OmniMechs for Alpha and Beta Galaxy as they could. While the rugged Lupus, Woodsman, and Thunderbird were all solid options, McCloud would not have access to these because they were produced by the canid Clans. McCloud found a viable Assault OmniMech in Clan Star Adder’s Ophiuchus, and limited access to Clan Snow Raven’s Kingfisher. The Summoner was also a solid choice, but McCloud could only procure small numbers from Clan Jade Falcon, and he ultimately decided a slower OmniMech with more pod space would be preferable.

Therefore, Khan McCloud directed Clan Cloud Cobra’s limited ground production efforts to establishing a new OmniMech production facility in the Cobra enclave on Brim. Brim MechWorks began operations in 2894 with production of a new Heavy OmniMech called the Hamadryad, “King Cobra”. With new heavy OmniMech production coming online, Khan McCloud implemented his changes to MechWarrior sibko system, with many new graduates assigned to Hamadryads.

Capabilities

The Hamadryad is a heavy brawler/trooper/striker OmniMech, the first of its kind to be produced. It mounts nearly 10 tons of Compound FF 20 Ferro-Fibrous armor, a 260-rated Starfire extra light fusion engine, and almost 35 tons of pod space. However, the small engine forces more of the heat sinks into the Hamadryad’s frame, so to stay cool, most configurations mount ballistic weapons, especially Gauss Rifles procured from Clan Cloud Cobra’s long-time ally, Clan Burrock. The OmniMech also comes with a fixed 120-meter jump range. The designers decided fixed jump jets on the sluggish Hamadryad would help significantly in defensive duties or on rough terrain, and were concerned the Clan may suffer greater attrition if jump jets were only an Omni-Pod-available option. Jumping mobility is especially critical, because MechWarriors who do not bracket their fire will overheat quickly.

The primary configuration mixes a Gauss Rifle and an ER PPC with short-range missiles and a Narc Launcher. Configuration A mimics fire support BattleMechs like the Rifleman, combining LB-5X Autocannons with ER Large Lasers and short-range missiles. Configuration B swaps A’s LB-X Autocannons for long-range missiles, more short-range missiles, TAG, and more lasers. Configuration C swaps the Primary configurations’s Gauss Rifle with an LB 20-X Autocannon, while also adding some secondary lasers. Finally, Configuration D is the second stock OmniMech configuration (after the Xenomorph) mounting the Arrow IV artillery system - in combination with a pair of Large Pulse Lasers, short-range missiles, and TAG. However, D was rarely seen, as it was more common to deploy Arrow IV systems on Aerospace assets.

Deployment

The Hamadryad saw extensive deployment over its four decades of service within the Coil and Battle Clusters of Clan Cloud Cobra. A stout and capable defender, the Hamadryad may have been slow for a heavy OmniMech but still managed to surprise many adversaries with a quick jump with its Flying Snake lifters. However, since the Hamadryad’s combat role did not mix well with the offensive nature of other Clan’s OmniMech deployment, the ‘Mech was mainly ignored by most other Clans. Only Clan Coyote fielded isorla Hamadryads in any significant numbers. Clan Coyote’s Hamadryads were still treated with disdain, and were only assigned to defensive duties in Clan Coyote’s Second Line and Garrison Clusters, especially for Star Commanders and Star Captains in solahma Clusters.

The death of the Hamadryad came shortly after the death of ilKhan Corian Tchernovkov. When Clan Snow Raven traced the death of the ilKhan back to Clan Cloud Cobra and reported their findings to the Clan Council in 2947, the Coyotes resumed a fifteen-year series of Trials against their age-old foe, deploying Beta and Lambda Galaxies for the majority of these operations (FM:WC, pp. 50, 53). The Coyotes focused their assault on Cobra enclaves on Homer and Brim, intent on pushing the Cloud Cobras to the brink of Absorption. While the Coyotes were successful, the Cloud Cobra’s strong AeroSpace assets, the stout performance of the Hamadryad (in particular), as well as the relief available form Khan McCloud’s reserve of MechWarriors, kept the Cobras from the edge of their demise.

However, the efforts of Clan Cloud Cobra’s Warriors was not sufficient to save the Hamadryad itself from extinction, not at the hands of Clan Coyote, but Clan Nova Cat. In November 2952 The Cats sensed an opportunity to expand their own OmniMech production, and issued a Trial of Possession for Brim MechWorks. Weakened and already near their breaking point, Clan Cloud Cobra had placed Brim MechWorks under the protection of the 270th Cobra Guards, part of Delta Galaxy. The Cobra Guards lost the facility in the quick and brutal Trial. Though the loss of the Hamadryad left the Cloud Cobras in an even more desperate situation, the Cobras survived primarily by strength of their Aerospace superiority. After the end of Coyote operations in 2863, Cloud Cobra began attempting to reclaim Brim MechWorks. However, counter-Trials have thus far been repulsed.

Brim MechWorks became a satellite facility of Brim Ironworks, and as the Nova Cats had little use at the time for a trooper/heavy striker, they retooled the lines to begin producing more Night Cat OmniMechs within a year. The facility has been retooled several more times over the next century, finally producing Huntsman OmniMechs in preparation for Operation: REVIVAL:

The upgraded Thunderbird II, introduced in 2936, was a significant improvement over the Thunderbird, both aesthetically and in its capabilities. The new T-Bird II only modestly adjusted the reverse-articulated legs and cockpit of the original to redistribute the OmniMech’s Podspace and armor. The Thunderbird II’s arms were also refined to ease reversing the field of fire for the OmniMech. While still not as well regarded as the Starnake, the Thunderbird II became a highly desired assignment for Warriors in Clan Coyote and throughout Clanspace.

Capabilities

The Thunderbird II, like its predecessor, was an above average Assault OmniMech. Utilizing an XL fusion engine and Myomer Acceleration Signal Circuitry allowed the T-Bird II sustained running speeds of 64 km/h, with quick bursts up to 86 km/h. Designers used their improved experience with Assault OmniMech loadout to add CI-96 Ferro-Fibrous Armor, improving protection of the original by over 10%; the addition of Ferro-Fibrous only slightly reduced the Podspace, and did not significantly alter any of the previous Thunderbird’s stock configurations. Most of the Thunderbird configurations still ran a little hot, but are nonetheless manageable for most Clan Warriors.

The primary configuration pairs the same quartet of torso-mounted Large Pulse Lasers with a Targeting Computer. “A” configuration relies on 90 long-range missile tubes, and replaces the original “A’s” pulse lasers and Machine Guns with Extended Range Medium and an ER Small Laser. “B” exchanges some of the LRMs for Streak SRM-6s and Jump Jets, and is the hottest standard configuration. “C” mounts primarily autocannons, but does not mount sufficient ammunition for long engagements, making it hard to overheat before it must retire. “D” still relies on a mix of 20 LRM tubes with paired ER PPCs and a medium LB-X auto cannon, allowing MechWarriors exploit any wounds. “E” was also well-rounded, mounting two Gauss Rifles, Medium Pulse Lasers, and 12 SRM tubes to find any breaches in an adversary’s armor.

Deployment

The Thunderbird II debuted in 2936, and significantly improved upon the reputation of the Thunderbird. The Thunderbird II appeared in every Clan Coyote Galaxy, and became Clan Coyote’s primary Front-Line Assault OmniMech after Clan Steel Viper destroyed the manufacturing lines for new Starnakes in 2963. The upgraded T-Bird II also found a home as isorla in the toumans of almost every other Clan. Over a century of nearly continuous production made the Thunderbird and Thunderbird II the longest produced First-Generation OmniMech. Clan Nova Cat's next attempt at the OmniMech took place over thirty years after the Hypernova. Having traded for and fielded OmniMechs for decades, and this time with the help of their Sea Fox allies, Clan Nova Cat designed an OmniMech featuring an intimidating combination of speed and Podspace. Using their first BattleMech, the Vision Quest, for inspiration, Clan Nova Cat created a cavalry OmniMech capable of speeds approaching 100 km/h with 21 tons of Podspace. For over one hundred fifty years, the Night Cat was the fastest Heavy/Assault OmniMech without MASC, until the introduction of the Linebacker in 3052. With nods to other Star League 60-ton BattleMechs, the Night Cat's loadouts feature Clan Extended Range Lasers, with the occasional missile system or ballistic weapon. Some of the configurations also mount targeting computers and jump jets.

Capabilities

The Night Cat is designed to move quickly and hit hard. Its Primary Configuration features Lasers and a Gauss Rifle; while reminiscent of the Vision Quest, Primary resembles other venerable Heavy Cavalry ‘Mechs, like the Star League Lancelot. Alternate configuration “A” trades the Gauss Rifle for a Targeting Computer, Pulse Lasers, and a Streak SRM-6, allowing it to close and exploit any wounds with its missiles. “B” features missiles, and has limited ammunition, but runs cool, and is quite capable as a cavalry missile boat. “C” is a brawler, pairing Extended Range Lasers with an Ultra AC/20 and enough ammo to rapid fire for nearly two minutes. Configuration “D” is a fast striker, adding jump jets, SRMs, and an LB-10X, able to kill armor and battle armor, or simply land as many hits against an opposing ’Mech as quickly as possible. Finally, configuration “E” replaces the “D’s” autocannon and SRMs with a pair of Targeting Computer-aided Large Pulse Lasers.

Though the Night Cat is well armed and quick, it is not particularly well armored. In order to mitigate this deficiency and capitalize on its speed, Warriors assigned to Night Cats are frequently found in Front-Line Supernova Binaries with battle armor. Before closing range, the battle armor augments the armor of the Night Cat; in exchange, the battle armor is deployed at its ideal battlefield location.

Deployment

The Night Cat is a potent Heavy Cavalry OmniMech, and excels at deploying battle armor infantry. Primarily found in Front-Line Supernova Binaries of Clan Nova Cat, the Night Cats is found mainly in Alpha and Beta Galaxy, though it can also be found in reaction forces used in larger engagements in other Clan Nova Cat Galaxies. Night Cat binaries are often bid away at the very end of the batchall just before reaching the cutdown, most often allowing their quick deployment if the Nova Cats are overwhelmed before the Trial is decided. Beta Galaxy is especially adept at the use of Night Cats to redeploy or reinforce, doing so with such elegance and speed, they often are able to choose their battlefield even deep into the Trial, keeping the opposing Warriors off guard.

Other Clans have deployed the Night Cat extensively, especially Clan Sea Fox. Through Clan Sea Fox’s long speculation with Clan Nova Cat, Sea Fox OmniMechs have frequently found their way into the Nova Cat touman, a return on the invested futures Clan Nova Cat paid to help the Sea Foxes explore (and exploit) the Kerensky Cluster. The long collaboration has also enabled a healthy trade. Clan Sea Fox also field healthy numbers of Night Cats, and while Clan Nova Cat does not preclude its Sea Fox partners from trading their Night Cats away to Nova Cat adversaries, especially Clan Smoke Jaguar, a tacit agreement between the two Clans have largely kept Night Cats away from Clan Nova Cat’s adversaries.

Production of the Night Cat appeared to trail off during the 31st Century, but it is not overly apparent why or what happened to all of it. Brim MechWorks, taken by Clan Nova Cat from Clan Cloud Cobra, and merged with Brim IronWorks, produced one third of all Night Cats in service by 3049. That year its production was halted in favor of the new Huntsman OmniMech in preparation for Operation: REVIVAL, as the Huntsman could be produced much faster for less, while still outperforming and outmaneuvering Inner Sphere Medium and Heavy BattleMechs. However, the Night Cat production at Concord Subterranean Industriplex of Circe also seems to have disappeared. Regardless of its fate by the Great Refusal, Circe was left uninhabitable by 3080s, a combination of its erratic orbit and the hell of the Wars of Reaving.

Hi All,

If you have not read Shrapnel Magazine or are not a subscriber, I highly recommend it! Along with fiction, there are nice gems, like new BattleMech variants and an early Clan Burrock OmniMech that we got a peak at in the Blood of Kerensky trilogy.

In response to the aforementioned OmniMech, I have retired the Clan Wolf section of this thread along with the Alpha OmniMech, and reordered the OmniMech technology acquisition timeline. More designs will probably be retired from the thread as details of other early OmniMechs become available. And of course, I will keep you updated if any more early OmniMechs come to light.

Clan Fire Mandrill

For years I have had the nagging feeling there were more OmniMechs I had missed. Upon re-reading the write up for Clan Fire Mandrill, I found my answer.

Clan Fire Mandrill’s early conquest of OmniMechs from Clan Coyote auspicated well for their success with the technology. However, a combination of military adventurism, hubris, factionalism (and its resulting disorganization) ultimately led to Clan Fire Mandrill squandering their initial gains.

Having acquired OmniMech technology from Clan Coyote directly in early 2866 (albeit using deceptive bidding practices), Kindraa Smythe-Jewel possessed design schematics for three of Clan Coyote’s early OmniMechs (FM: CC, p. 39) - the Coyotl, the Lupus, and the Spirit Walker (implied from Shrapnel 09, TP:F). Additionally the Smythe-Jewels had a more valuable prize, a pair of Coyote scientists capable of directing Fire Mandrill research into new OmniMechs (FM: CC, p. 39). This optimal starting point had the Smythe-Jewels convinced they would supplant Kindraas Sainze and Payne as the most powerful Kindraa. The Smythe-Jewels began producing Coyote OmniMechs as fast as their infrastructure could handle, which in turn helped them to seize the Elemental phenotype from Clan Hell’s Horses in 2870 (FM: CC, p. 39).

With this in mind, I decided Kindraa Smythe-Jewel would attempt to pioneer their own early Clan OmniMech to meet their unique needs. The Fire Mandrills are not the typical Clan. They are extremely insular, fighting much more amongst themselves than with any external Clan. Rather than fighting a few Clans regularly, the proximity of approximately a dozen Kindraa, all with enclaves frequently on the same three planets with each other, ensures not only a large variety of adversaries, but also a high rate of attrition. Kindraa espouse different styles of combat and field a wide range of unit types, including BattleMechs, AeroSpace Fighters, Conventional Infantry (so many in fact, at least two Kindraa were still fielding them in large number by the late 3050s – FM: CC, p. 48 & p. 51), and large numbers of Combat Vehicles. A Kindraa capable of producing OmniMechs, ideal for tailoring battlefield role and capabilities, would be able to adapt to this variety of close adversaries. While the Coyotl is a capable sniper or skirmisher, the Lupus can be used in a cavalry role or as fire support quite easily, and the Spirit Walker is a heavy brawler/sniper/juggernaut, I decided the early Smythe-Jewel acquisition of Elemental infantry might lead them to develop a Medium OmniMech filling the infantry support role of the later Fire Moth. The new OmniMech would be moderately successful supporting early Battle Armor infantry, but not did not feature the mechanized infantry adaptation of the Nova, which had yet to see combat. Kindraa Smythe-Jewel discovered this failing as they were Annihilated by Clans Coyote and Hell’s Horses (TRO: 3050U, p. 126), revenge for the Smythe-Jewel hubris.

Ultimately, all the Smythe-Jewels had built would be destroyed or scavenged: The single Smythe-Jewel OmniMech would be all-but lost to history, and the promise of Fire Mandrill OmniMechs would be left unfulfilled until the Viper, and even them, poor initial workmanship would lead it to be discarded to Clan Ghost Bear (TRO: 3050U, p. 122). The Smythe-Jewel enclave was taken by the Coyotes; the isorla and the best of the Smythe-Jewel scientist caste and factories were taken off world by Clan Hell’s Horses; and the of scraps Kindraa Smythe-Jewel were left on Foster to be scavenged by Kindraas Payne and Kline.

In the internecine conflicts that dominate Clan Fire Mandrill, OmniMechs were even more potent than within other Clans. Most Clans of the mid-29 century had sufficient numbers of Warriors and materiel to field multiple Galaxies distributed throughout their holdings. The average Clan possessed hundreds of BattleMechs, some active, some in caches, and some in repair bays. Whether relying on their caches or their factories, bidding for Trials may have required finesse to manage resources, but were still accomplished regularly; were it not the case, generations of sibkos would not have been able to become Warriors through Trials of Position. While the OmniMech is a force multiplier because it can be adapted to multiple mission types and can be repaired more easily, if a Clan possesses units large enough to bid appropriate to a Trial, OmniMechs are a luxury. Choosing units with BattleMechs capable for the mission is a skill, but is largely still accomplishable.

Resource scarcity, both in materiel and Warriors, was a completely different matter within the Kindraa system of Clan Fire Mandrill. Most Kindraa of the mid-2800s were limited to 2-5 Clusters of Warriors, but much of their Toumans were composed of Conventional Infantry or Warriors equipped with Combat Vehicles. Conventional infantry would be taken from any genetic stock, including Warriors decanted from MechWarrior and AeroSpace lineages, simply due to lack of genetic diversity. Additionally, Kindraa had to be largely self-sufficient, and most could barely manage that. For example during the REVIVAL Trials, some Kindraa Warriors took to the field in OmniMechs with damage unrepaired from the internecine Trials waged to determine the bid (FM: CC, pp. 40-41). With only 1-2 Clusters of MechWariors, a medium-sized Kindraa often had fewer than 90 BattleMechs split between their entire active Touman, their caches, and their repair bays, and most of this was rebuilt from isorla or Star League salvage. Considering the circumstances of Clan Fire Mandrill, any Kindraa with the ability to field 3-4 Trinaries of fresh OmniMechs could shift the balance of power dramatically.

This was the circumstance when Kindraa Smythe-Jewel decisively won OmniMech technology from Clan Coyote early in 2866. By hiding Lancelot C heavy cavalry ‘Mechs among their light Stars, and forcing the Coyotes to fight the heavier ‘Mech by manipulating zellbringen, the Smythe-Jewels won for themselves a decisive victory, albeit one that was considered very dishonorable. The victory secured the Smythe-Jewels parts, crews, Scientists, and schematics for three Coyote OmniMechs (TRO: GC, p. 26, FM: WC, pp. 41-42, FM: CC: pp. 39-40).

Soon the Smythe-Jewels were in a position to dictate the type of engagement when conducting Trials with rival Kindraa, and it appeared the Smythe-Jewels would become the most powerful of all the Kindraa, perhaps even able to re-unite the Clan. By 2869, Kindraa Faraday was attempting to integrate the Smythe-Jewels into a leadership position within Clan Fire Mandrill by accelerating joint strategic planning and brokering technology transfers between the Smythe-Jewels and their rivals in exchange for more Foster territory. Naturally, the Smythe-Jewels resisted the Faraday overtures, believing them unnecessary, since they appeared to be able to subjugate their fellow Kindraa by the force of their will without what they saw as Faraday manipulations. New configurations of the Coyotl and Lupus began appearing on Foster and Shadow as quickly as the chasses and parts could be manufactured. These newer configurations featured more anti-infantry and anti-Combat Vehicle loadouts, with pulse lasers, LRMs, SRMs, and the ubiquitous, domestically manufactured flamer. But configurations adding anti-infantry capabilities proved less effective against ‘Mechs, prompting the Smythe-Jewels to develop a new OmniMech.

The Smythe-Jewels new OmniMech would be purposely built for infantry and Combat Vehicle support operations. While the Coyotl, Lupus, and Spirit Walker were capable at fighting other ‘Mechs, their speed was frequently modest when compared with faster light ‘Mechs and swift Combat Vehicles like the Anhur or Svantovit. The Smythe-Jewels also decided anti-‘Mech loadouts of these Omnis were insufficiently effective against conventional infantry, which were far more common in Fire Mandrill Trials. A faster OmniMech could bring anti-personnel weaponry to range more easily, allowing this new OmniMech to operate in a cavalry role and aid Smythe-Jewel Battle Armored infantry. This new OmniMech would be moderately armed and capable of outmaneuvering larger ‘Mech opponents if necessary.

A further consideration prompted the Smythe-Jewels into designing the new OmniMech. When the Smythe-Jewels captured Elemental Battle Armor materials, breeding protocols, and Scientists in late 2870 (Shrapnel 09), Kindraa Smythe-Jewel Scientists heard rumors of Hell’s Horses efforts to design a novel OmniMech with mechanized Battle Armor capabilities. However, the isorla Scientists were unable to provide any details of the initial work. Rumors on the Chatterweb echoed the Scientists’ claims, with traces of Cloud Cobra Scientists’ work with infantry compartments capable of hard-wiring communications between the MechWarrior and the Battle Armor infantry. However, without details the Smythe-Jewel Scientists experimented with the concept briefly before abandoning it. While a mature sibko of Elemental infantry might be able to manage the stresses of mechanization, the first generation of Smythe-Jewel Battle Armor infantry found the infantry compartments too physically punishing. Instead, the Smythe-Jewels decided to acquire this new development from Clan Hell’s Horses and retrofit it when it was at last available.

The new Smythe-Jewel OmniMech would be named the Lucifer. The name Lucifer was derived from a subspecies of the Fire Mandrill introduced into the gallery and flooded forests of equatorial Foster. Fire Mandrills instinctively form large, aggressive, familial hordes dominated by females, with male pushed to the periphery by the age of sexual maturity. While evolutionarily favorable on Eden, hordes of Foster’s Fire Mandrills began declining in genetic diversity due to severe attrition of male Fire Mandrills (although females and the hordes themselves were showing signs of novel speciation even as early as 2867). The Scientist caste believed this was a result of toxicity from unsuspecting males hunting tree amphibians, a mistake the main horde made less often. Rather than leave such a crucial animal to succumb to natural selection, the Fire Mandrill Scientist caste corrected this flaw by creating a subspecies of Fire Mandrill, the Lucifer Fire Mandrill, which inherited the male-tolerance of the terran lucifer monkey. Though significantly smaller and darker of coat, the lucifer fire mandrill had far lower attrition rates in their male population, an even more insular nature than the wild type Fire Mandrill, and distributed communal parental duties among all the adults. The lucifer even carried their young until the infant dismounted to kill their first prey. With their even greater focus on the safety of juvenile members of the horde, Kindraa Smythe-Jewel decided the lucifer was the ideal inspiration for their new, infantry-support OmniMech.

Capabilities

The Lucifer is designed first to be fast. Using a 360-rated Extra-Light Fusion Engine, the Lucifer is capable of reaching speeds near 150 km/h at a run. However, if required to exploit a weakness or run down a fast Combat Vehicle, the Lucifer also mounts MASC for short burst above 190 km/h. The chassis saves mass by using Endo-Steel. 5.5 tons of standard armor is not thin, but is a weakness, protecting most locations with only enough armor to deflect infantry fire or the occasional Medium or Large Laser. In exchange for the weaker armor, the Lucifer can mount 7 tons of OmniPods.

Most Lucifer configurations are capable of fighting Combat Vehicles or infantry, if not as their primary mission, at least as the need arises. The Prime is designed to take on Combat Vehicles at medium distance, but carries a flamer to deal with infantry. “A” is a long-range sniper capable to killing many light and medium BattleMechs. “B” is designed for fire support and was meant as a gateway for MechWarriors accustomed to the Mandrill and Howler. Configuration C is tailored for incapacitating damaged opponents, or killing Combat Vehicles, and its 2 tons of ammo can include Infernos. Configuration D mixes infantry support with an ER Large Laser and ER Medium Lasers. None of the standard configurations mount jump jets. Additionally, lower arm actuators and hands were not even designed, meaning this OmniMech can flip in all standard configurations, but the ‘Mech has little utility outside combat. Heat and ammo are both well managed in all configurations, except configuration D, which can overheat if a Warrior turns their lasers on infantry.

Deployment

The Lucifer was introduced in 2871 to the general approval of Kindraa Smythe-Jewel, and the horror of Kindraa Payne in particular. While production could only manage one dozen OmniMechs in their first production run, this was sufficient to outfit each double-sized combined-arms Trinary in the Touman (TP:F, pp. 9-10) with a pair of Lucifers and a supply of spare parts. This wound up being the total number ever produced, however, because before a second production run could commence in 2872, Clans Hell’s Horses and Coyote launched a punitive Trial of Possession against several of Kindraa Smythe-Jewel’s key Blood Heritages. The Trial became the de facto Trial of Annihilation for Kindraa Smythe-Jewel.

After Clans Hell’s Horses and Coyote along with Kindraa Payne had completed the Absorption, Kindraa Smythe-Jewel Blood Heritages were claimed by the Coyotes and Horses, picked over by other Kindraa, or simply discarded. Clan Coyote kept most of the Smythe-Jewel enclave. Both Hell’s Horses and the remaining Fire Mandrill Kindraa split the isorla and standard production facilities. While Clan Fire Mandrill may have appreciated the Lucifer for its abilities as an infantry support OmniMech, the Coyotes and Hell’s Horses divided the OmniMech facilities and salvage amongst themselves, not allowing the Mandrills access to the infrastructure. Even if they had access, it seems unlikely they would have fielded the Lucifer. For Kindraa Payne especially, the Lucifer had been responsible for killing entire Trinaries of infantry in the preceding year. With the fall of the Kindraa Smythe-Jewel, it would be more than 65 years until any Kindraa would have the ability to design and manufacture a novel OmniMech again (TRO: 3050U, p. 122 – the Viper being one of the first, but not the first, attempt to create an OmniMech).

Hello everyone,

If you have not had a chance to read Turning Points: Foster, I recommend it! It fleshes out a lot of the details of the Smythe-Jewel "Absorption", and also gives us a glimpse at two new Coyote OmniMechs.

As such, I am considering the status of two OmniMechs posted in this thread. As the "Knave" is largely superfluous and there is some overlap in role, I have decided to retire the design in favor of the medium OmniMech from TP:F.
I have not come to a conclusion regarding the Xibalba. It is quite different from the new heavy OmniMech, and from a lot of other published Omnis from this period. When I do, I will let you know.

I love it. I asked about limiting Omni-compability to specific locations (specifically in reference to the Steel Viper Crossbow and Battle Cobra) in the forums 8 years ago, and they said it was the proclivity of the designers instead of a rule or design quirk here. Hey S.gage, did you catch Shrapnel #8? I wasn't really fond of the Executioner-B found within but it too should be recognized as another first generation OmniMech built by Clan Burrock. Details can be found on sarna.net for the record (link below). Also, very interesting in the fluff is a mention of an early Coyote Assault (which is lighter than the Executioner-B, so 80 to 90 tons) which could be the third of their fourth Pueblo Omnis. ;)

I did read the Executioner-B entry. I like it, though I have not yet played one, nor do I know how it would do.

The Executioner-B is an (intentionally) often under-sinked Assault OmniMech, primarily used as a juggernaut. It is too slow to dictate range for short-ranged weapon systems; you have to pick and choose what to fire based on the range/circumstance. If you play with quirks, its quirks don't help it. To me, golden century assault juggernauts make sense for zellbringen combat in very specific circumstances, like fighting another juggernaut (say, Stone Rhino vs. an Executioner-B) or a series of zellbringen duels. Very specific circumstances to me means it may not have the utility of a Lupus, Nova, or Summoner.

The Executioner-B may have its warts, and it is a very different take on the OmniMech from other 29th and 30th century designs, like the Kingfisher and Gargoyle, but I love having the options. And we have seen so little from Clan Burrock, this entry is characterful for the game.

I retired the the Alpha in response. While the Alpha can activate MASC in a pinch, I never really felt it was sufficiently characterful or distinct from the Executioner-B to be worthwhile keeping. The Alpha is the same mass and has similar armor and pod space. Probably the worst aspect of the Alpha was that it did not really add to the story of the Clans or Clan Wolf, and this made the decision easy. I'm mulling over the Hypernova and its relation to the Executioner-B, too.

I may give the Executioner-B some thought for new custom configurations, but the author did a good job fleshing out the design and it probably does not need any more configurations at this point.

With the clarification of ilKhan Danforth's role in OmniMech technology, I am also considering what this means for OmniVehicle technology. Who pioneered it, who introduced designs like the Badger and Bandit? Were they all Hell's Horses designs or were some introduced by Clans Wolf, Burrock, Fire Mandrill, the resource poor Blood Spirits? Clan Burrock has embraced a variety of combat philosophies, maybe they introduced an OmniVehicle. Maybe there are a couple forgotten OmniVechicles. We will have to see what our research finds. Maybe another thread...?

The thing about the Executioner-B that bothers me is it should be known as the Executioner I and the upgrade the Executioner II, at least in my opinion. I don't mind it on the drawback side of things because obviously it got replaced for some reason so it was never going to be perfect. The 16 base Double Heat Sinks are actually too much for me and I'd drop them to 11 for maximum pod space and optimal engine fit but I am becoming more accepting of the choices in light of the new Pueblos. The reasoning for the Spirit Walkers armor was particularly satisfying to me and especially Coyote like. I am looking forward to the Warlock and if it is a Pueblo Omni which design do you think it is based on?

Also, if I may further ask what do you think the cutoff will be for first generation OmniMechs? I envisioned the Nova (or Black Hawk – 50 tons) from Hell's Horses and the Crossbow (65 tons) from Steel Viper both introduced in 2870 as such but the fluff indicates they are clearly 'early second generation OmniMechs'. This means the Summoner (or Thor – 70 tons) by Jade Falcon in 2872, the Battle Cobra (40 tons) from Steel Viper in 2873, the Fire Moth (or Dasher – 20 tons) from Ghost Bear in 2874 would all be second generation Omnis too I suppose. Does this mean the Kingfisher (90 tons) in 2887 and the Kit Fox (or Uller – 30 tons) in 2890 are third generation OmniMechs?

The role of OmniVehicles in the Clans was likely controversial because of the application of modular components to these 'inferior combat machines.' Who is going to waste the Kerenskies on building these things besides Hell's Horses and endure the potential scorn of the more hidebound Clans like Coyote, Jade Falcon, and Smoke Jaguar? Right now Wolf is possible I suppose on the experimental front cause they were always cunning and may have sought some sort of advantage but more likely Hell's Horses is your best bet because of their philosophy. I don't see it as a Fire Mandrill project cause the Kindraa are always wrecking their stuff and don't have the unity or time to develop such a concept. Blood Spirit just outright lacks the resources and has to be wise in order to conserve their energies. Probably best discussed in another thread, yes.

The Warlock won't be a Pueblo; it's presence in The Trickster forces it to be one of the OG four as mentioned in FM:WC. The Pueblos are more of a Gen 1.5. Things get a bit messy early on because Omni development didn't occur at the same pace in every Clan, but they fall under the "Before any of the recipients could field their own designs, however, Clan Coyote had produced a new generation of OmniMechs" passage.

The Exeucutioner-B's name is partially a nod towards TRO:3050U, which mentioned the Burrock as being the base for the Executioner---so the B stands for Burrock.

Interesting, between that very useful upgrade and the refinement of a few design points that could make an excellent dividing line.

Ah, very good. The initial Trickster OmniMechs (intriguing cause the Clans don't play tricks especially Coyote but you can see at this point in history they are certainly pushing the bounds of what is acceptable) would be the Coyotl (#1), the Lupus (#2), along with the assault Warlock and an unnamed Light I'll assume. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the Trickster Initiative.

The Pueblos make sense cause they are essentially OmniMech force amplifiers of the first series built to give Coyote a definite edge. Also looking forward to seeing the rest of the Pueblo Initiative.

Lastly, can't wait to see how Sea Fox factors in on all of this. Does the Grand Council direct all challenges to Coyote? Are they protected by some sort of agreement made during the develop of the OmniMech which they help facilitate??

I largely agree with you, and I very much wanted to make mechanized battle armor capability the defining characteristic of 2nd Generation OmniMechs, too, but when I asked here, Wantec indicated the term was nebulous (at least as of 2013) and also involved a combination of factors, not the least of which was the ability to construct OmniMechs with an Endo-Steel chassis, Ferro Fibrous armor, and an XL fusion engine.
