A forgotten series of Land-Air 'Mechs: The "3" series
« on: 18 October 2021, 20:50:52 »
Right after the MK1 LAMs were rolled out there was another set of Wasp, Stinger, and Phoenix Hawk models in the works. Realizing the versatility that LAMs had it was decided that it may be a good idea to equip them for reconnaissance duty and carry a versatile weapons load. There were also attempts to cut the costs of the designs. These efforts produced the “3” series which were unsuccessful.

The Wasp and Stinger designs are almost identical to their BattleMech counterparts. Their weight was increased by 5 tons to account for all of the LAM equipment, give a sight change in structural integrity and reduce costs. They otherwise retain the same armor, weapons, and maneuverability. These models are known for their specialized Recon Camera that would go on to inspire the dual-camera system used on the Boomerang Spotter Plane. Both the Wasp and Stinger 3 LAMs still exist in the Inner Sphere (this report being written during the 4th Succession War) and are identifiable by their vertical stabilizers. The Stinger has one in between both turbines while the wasp has two total. These fins were prone to jamming during conversion and eventually dropped from future models. Also, they are known for their arm mounted medium lasers that are detached and mounted on the belly of the craft in Aircraft mode. The Wasp also keeps the SRM-2 launcher on the left leg which rotates toward the rear arc, which was later dropped in later models.

The Phoenix Hawk had no room for cost-cutting measures and kept its 50 ton chassis. This version followed the same design philosophy of the Wasp and Stinger “3” by adding a Recon Camera. Both medium lasers were actually dropped to allow for an arm-mounted large laser. It made the weapon more versatile, also mounted below the belly in Aircraft mode, but it was prone to weapons fire and heat issues because of its size. This model also had the SRM-2 feature found on the Wasp. It is identifiable by both of these external features and is extremely rare.

“3” series LAM models are extremely rare because they were not produced in significant numbers. The Wasp and Stinger were highly specialized and fragile, eventually regulated into training programs. Fortunately most of their hardware is compatible with today’s Wasp and Stinger BattleMech parts, which kept them from extinction. Most are in service among the Combine/Commonwealth boarder and frequenting the Rasalhague province. No Phoenix Hawk “3” models are known to exist and are considered extinct, all reports being unconfirmed.

I liked the Wasp and Stinger, though I'd probably have done both a bit differently, building them as 20-tonners going 5/8/5.  That frees up 2.5 tons as compared to the originals, which is enough for the LAM conversion and a bit more armor.

On the Phoenix Hawk, I'm not sure how I feel about the weaponry.  The recon camera is nice, but I think I'd prefer paired medium lasers to the SRM-2.

Hah. That's a good idea.

Yeah, but it's supposed to be crap. These are fluff designs, bar none.

Large Laser                 RA        2        8       5.0

This is sort of in line with what I was thinking. They're slower than their counterparts but they use pretty much the same equipment. The Phoenix Hawk... I just wanted it to be a mix of both the Wasp and Stinger with a little bit more umph because of the Large Laser.

I think those came out really well.  In fact, I may just…borrow these for my own use?

Damn. They have no Battleforce/Alpha strike stats. I will need to get those...

Wasp / Stinger (same AS stats, really) 110 10j" Arm:2 Struct:2. OV:0. Aimech mode: 30g". TMM2

The Phoenix Hawk has the same stats (with more armor and structure) because in Alpha Strike you count 1 point of damage oer 10 points of potntial damage. It is slight more nuanced than that, but basically it is this. So the PHX has 8 from the LL, 4 from the SRM2, and 2 from the MGs. Does not reach 15 pooints so does not go up to damage 2. that is certainly a failed design. Now, if you took a normal PHX with 2 lasers and "LAM-ed" it, the damage would be 220.

Cheers,
Xavi

Doesn't base AS damage round up? Specials round to nearest?

Nope. seems to be rounding to nearest, not necessarily up. So damage 12 rounds down to 10 (1) while damage 15-19 would round up to 20 (2). Been a long time since I looked at the conversion rules, tough.

Be my guest. Your input got me where I wanted to be!

For the Hawk, medium range would be 2 if you're sticking with the stock P-hawk weapons. You can just print out the card and add RCN to the ability list (recon camera).

Otherwise, here you go:

On the Phoenix Hawk, I'm not sure how I feel about the weaponry.  The recon camera is nice, but I think I'd prefer paired medium lasers to the SRM-2.

This one is for you since you like the stock Hawk:

Thanks!

No, thank you. I'm not that experienced with LAM's... if I knew that I could keep their weight the same without much change I would have done it.

I really don't like how AirMechs move around, though. The rules are way too clunky, so I'm figuring out a fair way to make it simple.

Well, it used to be much simpler, but very very powerful.  Basically, it was set up so that Walk was dropped to a 3rd, but Jump was multiplied by 3 and made Heatless.  So if you can think of a Phoenix Hawk with a Jump of 18 that generated less heat than it took to walk...
