Angel (Periphery BattleMech)
« on: 19 April 2021, 14:54:50 »
Taking some of the advice given to me in the Crouching Tiger QuadMech thread, I think I managed to come up with an unique and relatively simple (by 3145 standards) BattleMech that should be able to handle the trooper role well without being an overly optimized machine.  Twin MML-5s with 5 Medium Lasers for stripping armor and crit seeking along with an ER PPC with MML-5s for long range bombarments and sniping.  Heat looks bad, but its meant to drop the ER PPC up close and avoid the Medium lasers far away with bracket fire if the ammunition supplies run short.  Guardian ECM for added versatility.  Thoughts and critiques are welcome.

Code: [Select]
Angel ANG-1L

Mass: 60 tons
Chassis: Model G
Power Plant: VOX
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86.4 kph
Jump Jets: None
     Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Gumiho Bead
Armament:
     2 MML 5
     1 ER PPC
     5 Medium Laser
Manufacturer: Goguryeo Ltd
     Primary Factory: Busan
Communication System: Spirit's Call w/Guardian ECM
Targeting & Tracking System: Oblique Shot
Introduction Year: 3145
Tech Rating/Availability: E/X-X-X-D
Cost: 10,145,600 C-bills

Overview
Equipped with a Light Fusion Engine, the Mech is relatively durable, able to stay in the fight with even half the mech in shambles.  Weapons are designed for a mix situations relying on primary batteries of Medium Lasers paired with SRMs to strip armor in a sand blasting pattern.

At longer ranges, the Angel brings to bear a targeting enhanced ER PPC and LRMs making it a threat no matter the position.  A Guardian ECM disrupts enemy electronics and provides the unit an edge against Free Worlds League rival BattleMech: the Carronade.

Keeping in mind that comfort is a major factor in long term campaigns, the Angel is equipped with a roomier cockpit that the pilot could sleep comfortably in, expanded food supplies, refridgeration unit, and improved cooling elements making it a popular command Mech for light scouting and medium calvary elements alike.

Capabilities
Designed as a domestically produced BattleMech meant to counter the growing threat of the Free World's League expansion, the Angel is meant to be a relatively simple to mass produce design with few frills building on centuries of proven concepts and tactics.

Deployment
Deployment has thus far been restricted to defensive engagements against invading forces from the Free Worlds League border seeing a great deal of success due to its survivability and flexible ammunition.  Even with missiles dry, the Mech is capable of massed bracket fire up close leaving its opponents incapable of keeping pace during extended campaigns.

Nice concept.  If I may, I revised it a touch.  Personally, I don't care for paired MML-5's... not enough throw weight for a mech this size.  So,  I replace them with 7's.  Also added case in each torso for better survivability.  I broke the Medium lasers up do when you lose you arm, you don't lose all of the mediums.  Also (out of necessity) reduced the count by 1.  In all, I think it is more versatile and has a better chance of accomplishing the mission.  Thoughts?

I do like your build because I used to pack MML-7s in the design but the problem became that I lost a laser and a ton of ammo.  The 5 Mediums is 25 + available 12 for the two MML-5s.  Twin MML-7s keep that fire pattern so that works.

The only issue are Medium Lasers moving to smart locations :p

My idea was it was simpler for the state to manufacture a new arm entirely treating it like a bay.  Again thanks for the compliment and yeah great job getting the MML-7s to fit!

I was concerned about the loss of one of the mediums at first.... BUT... now you can throw in an ERPPC on occasion and not go nuclear!  And three tons of MML ammo should be enough to cause someone a headache!
I understand the manufacturing ease of which you speak.... But that has always come back and bit me in the butt

So I liked your overall take on it.  I've updated my design to reflect some of your thoughts.  The MML-5s have been upgraded to MML-7s.  I kept 3 tons of ammunition though I don't have CASE, I did move the third to the head so that both sides are relatively less fragile.  Medium lasers are kept in the right arm but are reduced to 4.  I kept my 12 Double Heat Sinks so that the use of ER PPC + Medium Lasers isn't burdensome and at long range while running it only generates 1 heat over.  Armor was reduced to make this possible.  It now has a much higher chance of PSR at long range and up close... well it hurts to get hit by a pair of oversize SRMs and Medium Lasers :D

It isn't perfectly optimized, but I hope it still gives people a good feel.  Hope you like the update :D

I like it.  About the only thing I would suggest is relocating all the ammo into the head and center torso locations.  I generally do that on mech's without case.  I'd rather lose the ecm in the side torso then have ammo go off.  That's just me though.  Otherwise, I like it!

Oh yeah, I get that as a matter of taste.  I just like the idea of some missile feeds in the torso in question.  I prefer the Guardian for my Ghost Sensors as my defense more than the CASE.  Its just a matter of how you want to defend yourself and rules level.

Glad you like it!  :D
