ARC-6S7 "Potato Masher"[Sneak Peak for Sanity of War]
« on: 04 November 2021, 21:46:19 »
Background:

Face Wrecker Stables for the most part was a small under the radar stable that got it's start sometime in the late 3050's but did not gain much notoriety until a few years later when they managed to win some substantial prize money and a slightly used Battlemaster.

This turn about of fate was largely due to a new hire in early 3061 by the name of Hanse Schultz.  He came in with his Grasshopper and had only one official match in the Factory before he took more of a liking to the unsanctioned fights and arenas.  His antagonizing nature and willingness to play what is commonly known as 'the heel' made him very popular with the crowd.  It was in one of these grudge matches where the windfall came.  Hanse won the match but his opponent had blasted his Grasshopper into near useless junk in return.

Using the new revenue and his growing popularity in the unsanctioned fights he was able to get a hold of an Archer that he decided to dub the Potato Masher.  It was in this mech that Hanse finally made his return to the sanctioned arenas.

Learning his opponent would be a Davion Noblewoman he bribed the right officials to get the match moved from The Factory to Ishiyama at the last possible moment.  Being an ardent detractor of the FedCom Alliance Hanse would be glad to welcome the newcomer to Solaris 7 properly.

Technical details:

The Archer obtained by Hanse was in sad shape missing it's LRM launchers and the center torso lasers pulled out.  So he replaced them with some MRM-30 launchers he got on the cheap and replaced the arm lasers with some ER models he also got from questionable sources.  A welcome surprise was the prior owner had already replaced the engine with a new Light Fusion Engine and the strange addition of MASC.  Ferro fibrous armor and a dozen double heatsinks round out the equipment.

Battle history:

Potato Masher has only been in a couple unsanctioned fights so far but the surprise of the MRM racks combined with MASC instead of LRM launchers has caught the two prior opponents off guard and secured easy victories for Hanse Schultz and Potato Masher.

Very nice. Plenty of ammo and boosted speed to get in range to use the MRMs.

Endo-steel instead of ferro to add another heat sink would nice but not essential certainly. Incidentally, the model designation implies it is based on the 6S model which has endo-steel... but i'll grant BT designations are rarely consistent so no big deal.
Figure there's future upgrade potential too, a supercharger instead of MASC to free mass for stuff, maybe Spikes because Solaris...

Love the name Potato Masher

Yuup.
Actually think there's a canon design that does this but can't recall which one. Might've been in a leg, which could cause a weird situation where a MASC crits itself, so to speak.

I actually lost track of the 6S variant being a thing and that it had Endo to work with.  I probably would have used that as the base instead if I had remembered it.

And yeah Potato Masher just got stuck in my head on so many different meta levels that I just had to use it.

Yeah I know.  It's pretty sub optimal but the idea is it is an upgrade that can be done on a podunk little world but is still an upgrade.  Ideally yeas I would use Endo instead and slap some CASE in there too for full measure and make it truly terrifying.  Maybe even get the 1G's rear lasers and SRM back.

Overview
A storied and well-regarded assault 'Mech, the BattleMaster is likely one of the most recognizable command vehicles to be found in the armies of the Inner Sphere. Durable and reliable, the design has served in many key line regiments since its inception in 2633. Though nearly every MechWarrior is familiar with its abilities, few are able to use their knowledge to their advantage when facing this formidable BattleMech.

Capabilities
The BattleMaster's combination of long-ranged, short-ranged, and anti-infantry firepower give it an intimidating and flexible damage profile. Even flankers have to take care, as the BattleMaster is one of the rare designs to mount rear-facing lasers on the base variant. Additionally, the large cockpit lends itself well to the needs of commanding officers. Spacious and well-equipped, it is often modified into a dedicated command console, though the large viewport makes the head slightly more vulnerable to enemy fire than other more armored designs.

Deployment
Although never produced in great numbers, the BattleMaster remains common due to the efforts of commands to keep each machine functional. Due to their production lines, Houses Steiner and Marik fielded the greatest concentrations of the design during the Succession Wars, though every Great House could lay claim to more than a few. House Davion, having no native manufacturing plant for the design, modified their BattleMaster to the BLR-1D specifications. Increased armor and the removal of the volatile SRM ammunition make this variant tougher than most, though these changes never proved common beyond traditional Federated Suns borders.
