Overview:
Though the Blood Spirits had hoped to wall themselves off from the Clans after
the Great Refusal, the Star Adders escalated raids against the Spirits until
the Trials of Possession were threatening the security of York and the morale
of Clan Blood Spirit. In order to infuse new spirit into her Clan, Khan Schmitt
began several programs, one of which would lead to new OmniMechs. As the
Spirits resources have always been low, however, they contacted one of their
"de facto" allies, Clan Snow Raven for help.
The Snow Ravens were more than happy to do so. The two Clans worked together,
and their efforts eventually paid off. The resulting Omnimech was later known
as the 40-ton Scarlet Cormorant.
Capabilities:
The Scarlet Cormorant was heavily based on the ancient Corvis battlemech and the
speedy Stormcrow Omnimech, leading to some comical nicknames such as the "Omni
Corvis", "Cheap Crow", and "Slow Crow". Indeed, the Scarlet Cormorant weights
40-tons, like the Corvis, and its 200-rated Standard Fusion Engine could only
propel the Omnimech to a max speed of 86.4 km/h; however, five fixed jump jets
help offset the slower-than-average ground speed. The use of only Endo Steel
and 7 tons of Ferro Fibrous to save weight , combined with a Standard Fusion
Engine, made the Scarlet Cormorant a robust, cheap and easy Omnimech to build
and repair. Finally, the Omnimech has has ten standard double heat sinks in
its basic layout.
The Prime configuration was a simple copy of the Stormcrow Prime, with an ER
Large Laser and an ER Medium Laser on each arm, and an ER Medium Lasers on the
head. However, only four extra double heat sinks, for a total of fourteen,
could be mounted on the chassis, requiring pilots to bracket-fire accordingly.
Configuration A was a mobile missile platform, with a pair of LRM-15 launchers
for long-range, supported by a pair of SRM-4 launchers for close-range. A
head-mounted ER Medium was the only non-ammo-dependent weapon, and also acts as
backup once the ammo dries up.
Configuration B has an Ultra AC-10 as its longest-ranged weapon, backed up by a
trio of ER Medium Lasers. This was also nicknamed the "Corvis" Configuration.
Configuration C was an all-energy design that was meant for urban/jungle
combat. A Heavy Large Laser on the right arm acts as the configuration's main
hole-puncher, supported by a pair of ER Medium Lasers on the left arm, and a
Small Pulse Laser on the head. All of the lasers were tied to a targeting
computer. Even with fifteen double heat sinks, waste heat could still be an
issue.
Primarily a knife fighter, Configuration D has four Medium Pulse Lasers (2 per
arm) as its main weapons. An ER Large Laser on the center torso allows the
Scarlet Cormorant to soften targets from afar, while a Small Pulse Laser on the
head was meant to counter any enemy infantry. Two more double heat sinks were
added to help deal with the waste heat produced.
Configuration E could engage enemies from any range, with four ATM-3 launcers.
The missile launchers were supported three ER Medium Lasers, and two more
double heat sinks were added to help dissipate waste heat.
Configuration F was meant for pest control (i.e. anti-infantry/battlearmore
role). Each arm was fitted with a Flamer, two Micro Pulse Lasers, and a Medium
Pulse Laser. Three ER Medium Lasers (one per side torso, and one on head)
round out the armament. The accuracy of the weapons (except the flamers) was
further improved thanks to a Targeting Computer, and an Active Probe was
installed to ferret out hidden units. This configuration has twelve double
heat sinks.
Deployment:
Deployment of the Scarlet Cormorant has been primarily limited in the toumans
of Clans Blood Spirit and Clan Snow Raven, though Clan Fire Mandrill, the Blood
Spirit's closest ally, has several of these Omnimechs in their toumans as well.
