Was thinking of this as a Trooper BattleMech for a fairly wealthy periphery state.  Only the QuadMech Turret is considered Experimental Tech in 3145.  While it lacks a headcapper, it has a deep well of ammo for the main gun and still puts out as much hurt as a Large Laser without breaking the bank.  Stealth Armor keeps the Mech alive for longer against opponents while the MASC gives the necessary boost in case they begin to close.  Worse case scenario, it can switch to ER Medium Lasers if they get within minimum range of the main gun.

It can't force a PSR in its opponents and I think that the inclusion of MASC is causing the mech's BV to spike.

A 3025 Warhammer has a good chance of taking it down for around a third of the mech's cost.

If I was to change it. I'd remove the MASC and the ER mediums I'd switch to a standard fusion engine and I'd drop the extra heatsinks.

I'd drop the speed and add jump jets to get a 4/6/4 movement profile.

And I'd place a single ER medium laser in the turret.

This way you will still have a long range sniper platform that uses terrain to control the range to the enemy.

You still can't force PSRs and your mech will be in trouble if anyone gets close but it should be as effective on the battlefield for far less C-bills and BV.

So my thought on the Warhammer was that the PPCs are shorter ranged and have the disadvantage of shooting at Stealth Armor equipped unit at the same time.  The movement should be enough to also add an additional edge to make it harder to hit every few turns.  BV yeah is worse, but I wasn't sure that would be as much of an impact given that the Crouching Tiger is Heat Neutral while a 3025 Warhammer using its Single Heat Sinks won't be able to bring nearly all its guns to bear or keep pace.

Well... The firepower is not really enough to stop an enemy. As noted, it's going to have operate as a dedicated sniper and stay at long range. Not really a trooper.

But the big question mark is the tonnage. The MASC and maxed armor really weights far to much. Remove the first and reduce the next to get this instead:

I know!  I keep trying to make it worth with periphery tech, but I keep hitting the brick wall that you basically can only do it as IS/Clan hybrid using Clan-spec weapons.  I wish the Periphery had access to that kind of hardware in 3145, but it feels like only the Successor States have that of manufacturing capacity.  I like the boost to 6/9 though and will play with that a little bit.  50 Tons seems to be a good sweet spot even if it means losing some armor.

Based on your suggestions, do you think dropping the Light Gauss for an ER PPC would be better in the long run?  It did give me room to mount a Streak SRM-6 launcher as well for crit seeking and ammo conservation if they get close.  I wanted to keep the Light Gauss, but the higher damage, slightly less range, no minimum range, and ammunition free main gun might push it better into the Trooper category?

It's a lot more useful, for sure. It can at least cause a PSR with guns (22 damage at 9 hexes). Still going to run into heat issues at short range, thought. And the XLFE isn't great if you want to stand up to enemy fire. :(

If you want it to "be a trooper", you'll arguably need sacrifices to fit in a LFE. Thought in the end it's still usually best off as a specialist.

Yeah, as a specialist, I guess it still works as is with the ER PPC mix.  That said, you mentioned heat issues, I don't think I do more than generate 5 over at close range while running.  If I treat it like a hit and fade harasser paired with more standard troopers, do you think it'd be able to perform?

First off, I just noticed that you're forgetting to actually the guns to the turret! I figure you're using MMLab so I can't tell you how to do that...  :-\

Anyway, problem is you can't really afford to take another 4-5 heat after firing the SSRM once, severely limiting your firepower. Might be better off dropping to a SSRM4 and adding another DHS. Or use a XL gyro, drop a little armor, and make this:

Have to be a bit careful about firing both launchers. But as long as you walk it's max +4, and then you can drop 1-2 heat per turn until it's safe to fire again. :)

I went without stealth armour instead Ferro Standard engine slows it to 4/6 Jump Jets give mobility.  Compact Gyro and Standard engine for survivability

Guardian ECM remains for defence, Heavy PPC and MML7 probably land it in support rolls

First off, I just noticed that you're forgetting to actually the guns to the turret! I figure you're using MMLab so I can't tell you how to do that...  :-\

Anyway, problem is you can't really afford to take another 4-5 heat after firing the SSRM once, severely limiting your firepower. Might be better off dropping to a SSRM4 and adding another DHS. Or use a XL gyro, drop a little armor, and make this:


Yeah that is a good point on fire curve.  I'll think about the Streak SRM-4 more.  Megamek has it the turret stuff accounted for, but it keeps not publishing the turret tonnage when I export it to notepad.  I'll keep that in mind.

I went without stealth armour instead Ferro Standard engine slows it to 4/6 Jump Jets give mobility.  Compact Gyro and Standard engine for survivability


Seems like 4/6 is the line for Troopers that I'd get for an IS Quad.  Always dislike that curve though even if the internals are a bit delicate.  Probably will have to scrap the idea entirely at this rate cause getting a 5/8 or 6/9 idea seems impossible.  :(

It's sad because it seems like such a neat way to get a worthwhile quad would be turret + stealth to keep the Mech always in an optimal firing position.

Yeah Quads in general are tough and their hardware limits really shoehorn them into support/sniper rolls. Something like the Blue Flame is the pinnacle sniper quad. I fear they will be limited to drone operation or underwater/urban specialist roles that extra piloting and low profile definitely helps.

What about combining the Crouching Tiger 2 as a sniper platform with great mobility and the occasional up close SRM punch with this as a more main line trooper variant?  The Crouching Tiger 3 has a pair of Plasma Rifles so gets the 20 points of damage at short and medium with a Targeting Computer to assist.  3 Tons of ammunition feels like a reasonable amount for modern battlefield endurance against Periphery units.  The heat also means vehicles are in trouble while Mechs are gonna have heat management issues that can be exploited.  Speed is only a 5/8 curve, but it retains a Guardian ECM for defense and sensor ghosts.  Heat neutral itself LFE for increased durability.
