Overview:
In Clan Culture, it was expected that underperforming warriors were weeded out,
denied the opportunity to assume leadership roles or contribute to the next
generation of their caste . These warriors, who fail to be identified as
ristars, become more and more desperate and begin taking more risks in combat,
looking for that one glorious fight that will place them back on the path to a
Blood-name.
For many of these types of warriors, they were usually assigned to a Hunchback
IIC as their battlemech. Notoriously known as the "walking coffin" or "suicide
ride", any warrior piloting such a battlemech was not expected to survive their
next battle.
However, there were those in the Clans that regard such use of a machine to be
a waste. Clan Snow Raven, in particular, felt that sentiment more strongly
than the other Clans, and sought to make the venerable Hunchback IIC more
effective than its current form. With the help of their longtime ally, Clan
Ghost Bear, the Snow Ravens refitted the battlemech to their specifications,
which was later nicknamed the "Gaussback".
Capabilities:
The primary difference between the regular Hunchback IIC and the "Gaussback"
was the main guns; rather than using Ultra AC-20s, this variant of the
Hunchback IIC utilizes a pair of Thunderstroke 2B Gauss Rifles, supplied with
three tons of ammunition. While lacking the hard-hitting power of the Ultra
AC/20s, the range, ammo per ton ratio, and nearly non-existant waste heat
produced makes up for it; at the same time, the Gauss Rifles were still capable
of taking out a 'mech via headshot. The Series 7J ER Medium Lasers in the
center torso were kept, allowing the battlemech to inflict damage even if the
ammo runs out.
Due to the cool-running nature of the battlemech, the battlemech was stripped
of two double heat sinks, leaving the battlemech with only ten. Also, the
armor was replaced with Ferro-Fibrous, and increased to seven tons, improving
the armor coverage. However, due to the arms lacking any weapons, armor
coverage was focused on the torsos and the legs, leaving very little armor to
the arms.
However, the "Gaussback" still shared some flaws with the original Hunchback
IIC. It is still slow for its class (with a top speed of 64.8 km/h). And just
like any Hunchback, the "Gaussback" would be most likely to be targeted
immediately as soon as it is spotted.
Another flaw that the "Gaussback" has was due to its main guns. Regardless of
the amount of ammo, if the Gauss Rifles themselves were struck by enemy fire,
the capacitors that power the weapons' electromagnets will release their stored
energy, with an effect similar to an ammo explosion.
Battle History:
The most notable use of the "Gaussbacks" was during the Combine-Ghost Bear War,
when these battlemechs were utilized for offensive and defensive purposes by
the Clan Ghost Bear Touman.
Deployment:
Ever since its inception, the "Gaussback" Hunchback IIC battlemechs were only
deployed by Clan Ghost Bear and Clan Snow Raven.
Variants:
The "Gaussback" was a variation of the Hunchback IIC.
Additional:
Another idea for a variation of the Hunchback IIC. What do you think?
