IRON RHINO ASSAULT OMNIMECH

IRON RHINO ASSAULT OMNIMECH

During the Jihad, Diamond Shark escapees from the Homeworlds brought word of a renegade Clan Coyote faction assaulting their enclaves with advanced, never-before-seen omnimechs.  Although the escapees brought too little information to reverse-engineer these Coyote designs, Shark scientists and technicians did inherit battleroms, salvage, and file fragments that would inspire and drive their mech developments for several decades to come.

One of the advanced Coyote designs reinforced a mid-weight assault omnimech chassis and wrapped it in ferro-lamellor armor and other defensive measures.  Recognizing the value of a mech that could outlast all comers in Clan combat trials or in defense of Shark facilities, the Sharks sought to adapt the Coyote innovations to an even heavier design and settled on the venerable Stone Rhino.

The resulting Iron Rhino resembles the Stone Rhino and tops the scales at 100 tons like its progenitor, but alters the Stone Rhino right down to it bones.  The chassis of the Iron Rhino is heavily reinforced, doubling both its weight and its ability to absorb damage.  The Iron Rhino’s cockpit and hip actuators are also separately armored, protecting the Iron Rhino from fatal attacks on it mechwarrior and crippling damage to it motive system.  The Iron Rhino also incorporates a compact gyroscope.  This makes the gyro harder to target, while also freeing up volume for centrally mounted weapons that ensure the Iron Rhino can return fire until combat ends.  Protecting all these improvements in the survivability of the Rhino’s internal systems is 20 tons of ferro-lamellor armor, later used on the Vulture Mk IV and Mad Cat Mk IV, which grants the Iron Rhino armor protection equivalent to that of a low-end superheavy mech and makes the Iron Rhino impervious to certain attacks like LB-X cluster munitions.  Every Iron Rhino configuration incorporates further defenses like AMS, ECM, or CASE II.

Despite the mass expended on these defensive measures, the Iron Rhino remains mobile and offensively potent.  The Iron Rhino employs the same 300-rated extralight fusion engine as the later Vulture Mk. IV, granting it the Stone Rhino’s top speed of over 50kph, and its configurations also incorporate the Stone Rhino’s jump capability where needed.  With nearly 40 tons of omnipod mass available, Iron Rhino configurations also match or exceed the fearsome firepower of the original Stone Rhino and its variants.

Initial Iron Rhinos lacked omnipod capabilities and were fixed in the Prime configuration.  These were exclusively deployed to guard high-value Shark assets, often displacing Mad Cat Mk II assault mechs, and were nicknamed “Zombie Rhinos” by raiding forces from other Clans that were staggered by the design’s survivability.  The Prime comfiguration replaces the Stone Rhino’s Gauss cannons with dual ER PPCs delivering the same firepower, armor penetration, and headcapping over a slightly longer range with no minimum range or ammunition limitations.  The ER PPCs are mounted in the Iron Rhino’s arms, moving the Stone Rhino’s pulse large lasers to its dorsal weapon mount.

With 13 pod-mounted freezers added to its 12 engine-mounted freezers, the Prime configuration can indefinitely fire all four of its primary energy weapons without overheating from a fixed fire position.  When cruising or flanking, the Prime can still fire all four primary energy weapons for extended periods without negative het effects.  A powerful Watchdog CEWS suite and cockpit-mounted flamer round out the Iron Rhino Prime’s capabilities, protecting it against advanced targeting systems and infantry attacks or obscuring its exact location with ghost targets and smoke.

After facing the extreme survivability of the “Zombie Rhino” for themselves, other Clans began inquiring with Shark merchants about purchasing Iron Rhinos for their secondline and garrison forces.  But it would be decades until the renamed Sea Foxes would offer the Iron Rhino for sale.  Spurred by the success of their ferro-lamellor armored heavy omnimechs, the Mad Cat IV and Vulture IV, the Foxes added omnipod capabilities to the Iron Rhino and offered it as an assault and command complement to those lighter designs.  To date, over a dozen Iron Rhino configurations have been developed by the Foxes and their customers.

The Iron Rhino A is a heavy fire support configuration in the vein of the Bane 3 with exactly 100 LRM launch tubes spread across its six launchers.  With three pod-mounted freezers, the Iron Rhino A can fire its full volley of 100 LRMs while flanking without negative heat effects.  Ten ammunition bins protected by CASE and CASE II allow the A configuration to maintain this barrage with a wide variety of warheads for up two minutes.  The Iron Rhino A is further protected by a laser AMS, but engaging the AMS or constant movement requires that one LRM-15 or LRM-20 be periodically taken out of the firing sequence to avoid overheating.

The Iron Rhino B is a close assault configuration modeled on the Stone Rhino 6 that also incorporates electronic warfare capabilities.  Although far too slow for the recon role, it excels in the point position under the heaviest combat conditions.  Ten pulse medium lasers, 90 meters of jump capability, and 21 freezers ensure that the B configuration can rapidly and accurately respond to threats with overwhelming force.  In fact, the Iron Rhino B can fire all of its lasers and jump uninterrupted for 40 seconds without negative heat effects.  The Iron Rhino B also carries an Angel ECM suite and a light active probe screen its starmates against advanced targeting systems and hidden units, as well as a TAG unit and flamer for dealing with conventional forces.

The Iron Rhino C is a command variant on the Primary configuration.  The C retains the Primary’s main weapons array, including dual ER PPCs and twin pulse large lasers.  But the C adds capacitors to the ER PPCs, allowing a Star Captain or Commander to send decisive firepower equivalent to a 20-class autocannon round far downrange.  With 23 freezers, the Iron Rhino C can fire both pulse large lasers and one capacitor-enhanced ER PPC while charging the capacitor and cruising without heat buildup.  The smaller number of freezers frees up space for a communications module that improves the commander’s oversight and unit cohesion, often allowing an assault trinary or star to outmaneuver opposing units.

The Stone Rhino D is a shock configuration, designed for breaking enemy lines and breaching fortifications with its dual Ultra 20-class autocannons.  Eight Streak SRM launch tubes add weakness-seeking capability to the massive armor penetration of the autocannons.  A supercharger boosts the D configuration’s top speed by 20 percent to 65 kph.  With 13 freezers, the the Stone Rhino D can fire four autocannon rounds while charging at top speed without negative heat modifiers or two autocannons rounds and all eight Streak tubes while flanking without heat buildup.  Five dispersed ammunition bins wrapped in CASE II and CASE support one minute of continuous fire with the autocannons in ultra mode and two minutes in standard mode.  While the rounds are sufficient for its role, the D configuration often outlasts its ammunition and retires after breaking an enemy line or breaching a fortification.  A light TAG unit gives the D configuration additional breaching capability when backed by Arrow IV.  A Guardian ECM suite and flamer provide further protection against advanced targeting systems and infantry.

The Iron Rhino E is an advanced fire support configuration similar to the Turkina D.  The E configuration carries 45 ATM launch tubes spread across three massive batteries.  Ten ammunition bins protected by CASE II and CASE provide a deep and varied supply of standard, ER, and HE warheads.  With 14 freezers, the Iron Rhino E can alpha strike while flanking without negative heat effects.  A laser AMS further enhances the E configuration’s survivability, but when the AMS is engaged, one launcher has to be left out of the firing sequence to avoid debilitating overheating.

The Iron Rhino F is an anti-tank, anti-infantry, and incendiary configuration.  Four plasma cannons deliver excess damage against combat vehicles, battle armor, and unarmored infantry at a range of over a half-kilometer, often disabling these conventional forces before they pose a threat.  With 14 freezers, the F configuration can sustain this fire without heat buildup.  If an opponent closes, the Iron Rhino F responds with 40 SRM tubes.  Against battlemechs, the F configuration cripples opponents’ thermal management systems with the plasma cannons before closing to finish them off with massed SRM salvos.  A supercharger helps the Iron Rhino F close quickly, and complete electronic warfare suite helps it anticipate and respond to hidden conventional forces.

Just amused that the ranged firepower of the Dire Wolf Widowmaker could fit on a 100-tonner with the structure and armor of an Osteon.

Thanks, Kojak.  More configurations coming...

Thx Sig.  She’s a bit different from most 100-tonners by relying on survivability as much as firepower, and she’s got a nice balance of both.

Got the main assault, heavy fire support, and close assault/point configurations up.  Command and maybe shock/breaching tomorrow.

Really dig this too. I've been finding that with crit and heat  concerns, it tough to use more than 40ish tons of pod space unless you're  building a bracket fighter on a clan mech. The heaps of defensive measures are a good use of the extra mass.

Looking forward to the next configs.

Question, what is going on with the Angel ECM and BAP on the Alt-B?

1 ton/crit is correct for a clan AP, but the ECM should either be 1 or 2 tons/crits. You could easily ditch the flamer to make up the mass.

Thanks for the catch, gents.  Been doing these by hand.  Mixed up Angel ECM and Watchdog CEWS tonnage.

Fixed on the B configuration by keeping the Angel ECM and shrinking the Active Probe to a light model.

Thx again.

The B Variant is good: I mean what mech with 10 Clan Medium Pulses isn’t? But it has no long range weapons besides ‘TAG’. It needs a long range weapon.

Just deploy it alongside the A config.

The B Config is for when you want to demolish a Urban area, but not burn it outright with fire (or other warcrime laden means...) .
It is just fast enough to operate in a Urban environment reasonably well and has enough firepower and durability to demolish anything that gets in its way. It doesn't 'need' long range weaponry...

Thx, MG.

Yeah, a 100-ton Osteon would seem to be its natural evolution, and the Stone Rhino already looks over-armored, so maxing its survivability seems right, too.

I tried to take the best of the Osteon (ferro-lamellor, reinforced structure, CASE II) while leaving the strangeness of the torso cockpit behind.  I think the armored cockpit and hips are a better option.  Also put some kind of ECM or AMS on each configuration to make up for the Osteon’s Nova CEWS.

Primary thru D configurations are up.   More to follow.

I agree.  I think the Tomahawk/Tomahawk II show the limits.  Most of their configurations carry an extra main weapon or two that you really can’t use effectively due to heat constraints.

The heaps of defensive measures are a good use of the extra mass.

The other way I go with top-end assaults these days is 4/6 movement on a 95- or 100-tonner, which I think is more effective with current tech (at least Clantech) than 3/5.

The Iron Rhino is an attempt to make a 3/5 top-end assault more relevant again through sheer survivability.

Prime thru E are up.  More to come.

Thx again.

They are all nice but it looks like there's an ammo-less LRM15 putting the E overweight (maybe left over from the A?)  :-X

It would be nice to have an extra ton of comms gear on the command variant for the TacOps initiative bonus and EW abilities a 3 ton unit gives you - it might be worth dropping one of the DHS if you play by those rules.

Thx.  Copy error.  Removed above.

I’m pretty sure just being a mech provides effectively 1 ton of communications equipment under those rules.  So it should only need 2 tons of communications equipment to get a -1 on initiative rolls and 6 tons for a -2.

Thx again.
