Only just the GR's and CASE make this thing outside of SW's era, I think? I'm not an IS specialist.
DHS's would help,... Although the ability to go without may help greatly.


Second Stalker.

Here's the nasty one.
However, the LPPC's are a forced need for DHS's.
Not that the other one alone would suffer from a swap out, just... firing either the twin LRM 5's or either one or both of the ML's is up to +4 Heat per turn. +2 Heat standing still.

This one...
This thing needs DHS's, however, it's got pretty solid fire support for a decent amount of time to quite a good long while.
Given the option, I'd figure the second one, above, is more popular.

LRM's are able to indirect, although for a more sniper fire support role, this nasty guy below is gonna be pretty good at it.

Given the option?

The ability to swap from either:

- 2 LRM 5's, 2 T's Ammo, 2 x 0.5 T's CASE per ST. SHS's can work. DHS's would allow an Alpha Strike until dry.
OR
- 2 LPPCs. Needs DHS's, and with 16 shots per GR, it's going to eventually run into issues. The 2 LPPC's and 2 ML's do give it at least some long term staying power.

The issue would be the need to swap to DHS's, for the second IS, or third. And it's a must.

Removed to put the very much needed CASE back into each ST.

  • That's a clean burnin' platoon, I tell you what.
I'm quite fond of the Stalker, especially back with Succession Wars tech where it's a bracket-fighter done very right.  I've experimented with 'Super Stalkers' that put on 10 pounds, but never really thought them worth posting, and I love to tinker with the original (usually by pulling the SRMs for new mission-oriented emphasis in its weapon mix).  As to these three examples, I have mixed feelings.

The Clan one is brutal, and the lack of minimum range in the LRMs means you really don't lose anything by dropping the SRMs from the OG save infernos.  Getting 'round its back end won't help, as it continues the tradition of flipping arms and now those lasers are pulse models.  Fighting it from the front is going to be a painful slog, since it's punching big holes and then filling them with LRMs.  Rear armor layout I would quibble over in all three - in a 'mech like this, bumping the sides to 10 and the CT to 15 is standard practice to my personal tastes, though your own mileage will vary.  Overall, I'd say I like it.

I'm less enthused with the two Inner Sphere models.  The first of them has a problem with close-range firepower; two medium lasers isn't much, and at 3/5 not having any close-range weapons in those flippable arms seems like a mistake to me.  The weapon mix leaves me a bit cold, personally.  Gauss rifles are great, but you pay a considerable toll on one of the Stalker's charm points to mount them: a very multi-purpose armament.  This is a pure direct fire support platform, end of.

The third is the same - direct fire support - but draws a line under it.  Most of the same quibbles I have with the second I have with the third.  Don't get me wrong - it's got a fat belt of armor, no wimpy IS XLFE, runs ice-cold, and has a beastly long range love tap, but it doesn't feel like a natural permutation on the Stalker to me.  But then, not all successors or variants need hew closely to their forebears - it's really a matter of taste, that.  Both the second and third, like the Awesome, would probably do best with a battle buddy to screen against hard-chargers getting in under the guns.

As a last orphaned comment, you're correct - the gauss rifles and CASE exclude the second one from the Succession Wars, but that's it.

I'll have to look at the two IS Stalkers and see how I might put more defensive short range firepower back in, later.

If the GR's are such an issue, I'd figure that at least given the option there's two quick ideas which would cause me concern:

1 - LGR's would likely be upgraded to GR's, especially given the way most LGR's are just too close in tonnage for GR's to not just be better. The damage spike is simply far too easy to chase.
2 - AC/10's may just be the better call. And, not outside of intro tech.

3 - A recent idea. I can just drop the GR's for PPC's, more SHS's, and if able, hopefully at least two more ML's.

I didn't claim this thing was a true replacement. This idea is apparently not worth considering further then? Or am I reading that wrong?

So I'm wrong there.

Always room to improve, at least within reason.
Time to tinker further then.

Upping the rear AV is something I will now fix.

A couple of quick points:  I don't think the IS versions are bad 'mechs, besides the couple of quibbles with armor and lack of defensive weapons, and I don't think those two issues render them useless, just hurt their performance.  It might be the case that you want some built-in warts; I like to have some on my designs.  Also, I'd disagree that a mostly-introtech upgrade path is not worth your time.  Chasing gauss in that context though - to me - makes the final product feel distinct from a Stalker.  Not bad, but different.  Gauss rifles are just so darn heavy that they end up defining the entire 'mech when you've no recourse to the wondrous have-your-cake-and-shoot-it-too perks Clantech gets to enjoy.

As far as other primary weapon options, I'd probably be tempted to go with LB10X boomsticks, or yes, PPCs.  Both give you reach and killing power over the old large lasers, but they leave you with more freedom of tonnage to create a diverse portfolio of armaments for which the Stalker tends to be known.  Light gauss is not a terrible option - you get back six tons, enough to bump the LRM/5s in Stalker #2 back up to the traditional 10s if you want them.  And while light gauss suffer at close range, they're as hard-hitting as the dearly departed large lasers while having considerably better range and none of the heat of ER larges.  Though of course - YMMV.

So, a few thoughts.

On the Stalker #2 of my OP.

Swapping the RT LRM 5 and its 1T of ammo to an SRM 4 and 1T of ammo might work. Heat's the only real issue.

Another way to improve is the long arms:
- PPC's aren't great, and the one I posted later, I think, could just do the above SRM 4 swap out in place of the RT LRM 5 and its ammo.
- LB-10 X's for the Intro variant GR's. the issue would be the 2T slug and 1T cluster each I've found is best. And the need for DHS's.
- LGR's would be great, however, it's okay. I can also see why. This'd free up more tonnage, likely for more Close In weapons, or larger LRM's. SRM's first?
- If going to ER LL's, or even basics, DHS's are a must.

All of the above could seriously aid from being swapped to DHS's instead of Singles.
Another choice might be to swap the RT LRM 5 for a ML and two SHS's, or, if going to DHS's, there would be maybe 2T's free.

I may fully revisit.
The single larger issue here is the as noted seriously tight restrictions for as simple tech as possible, even with the near Intro GR build.

Or, run pairs of 2 LRM 5's and 2 SRM 4's, as a Lance.
...
Or, just swap all to RT SRM 4 and LT LRM 5. 1T ammo to each.

Still,...

I may add a refit later, just trying to figure out how to best get a solid Stalker together.
Said refit would be more of a Stalker with the idea behind it being more of the, "shove in what might work and try to keep it as Intro as I am able."

Which is why that GR design in the OP is verbally amended in the post above this one.

Also, the SRM 4's can be moved into the arms as normal. I can do that stock, however, it just seemed a bit wiser to move them since the ST ammo bins are right nearby and within the same location. And, if an arm is lost, the ammo is now rather than a free crit bomb, able to feed its said SRM 4.

I like it, though it runs a bit too cool for a Stalker. Maybe switch to ERLLs? That gives you nice brackets: Two large lasers and LRMs for 32 heat, up close switch to SRMs, medium lasers and one large laser and you're up to 32 again. Drop a medium laser or LRM every now and then to compensate for movement and you're golden.

ERLLs would totally work, but I was trying to stick to DHS (CASE happened because I ran out of crits).

I was going to ask how the OP's 4W made 20 DHS fit, then I noticed he moved the ammo to the legs...  ^-^

Yes, I'm also still not sure yet if so much ammo shoved into the legs is a good idea.

I was thinking that the Stalker designs I've posted would be based off of the Daishi / Dire Wolf and Masakari / Warhawk Hips and Legs design.

I've always felt like the Stalker had really badly designed stock legs.
