It was no surprise when Defiance Industries was awarded the low rate initial production run of the Long Tom Artillery Cannon in 3015.  Nor was it surprising they chose to integrate the massive weapon on their signature Zeus assault 'mech.  Doubts about the wisdom of removing almost every other weapon vanished with the first demonstration of the range and power of the Long Tom.  Heat concerns were somewhat mitigated by mounting four heat sinks in the legs where they could take advantage of open water, but it wasn't until a consignment of Freezers were delivered sometime after 3022 that the harumphing stopped.

It's hard to say no to 20-damage pimp-slaps at any appreciable range in the SW era, though I imagine you're going to become very "popular" very fast, and the splash on the gun makes things complicated when fights tighten up and you need to support your lance (let alone yourself).  That's what kicks are for, I guess.  Interestingly, the sacrifices you've made to make this 'mech capable of toting this gun allow you to 1:1 switch in a full-scale Sniper artillery piece and actually save on ammunition efficiency and heat.  You could make a "half-assed Helepolis" sub-variant with a little judicious juggling of heat sinks, if you were so-inclined.  Perhaps better to just put that on a truck, though, rather than aboard a 'mech.

Trucks work fine for shoot and scoot duty.  The LTAC has more of a direct assault role that fits with an Assault 'Mech...  :)

Yup, I tend to agree with that philosophy.  The cost and complexity of a 'mech doesn't generally suit the job of artillery, where volume of fire counts for a hell of a lot.  You end up with a 'mech that can't fight very well and an artillery piece that has an unacceptable cost/logistics train, so you end up having to detail a pretty hefty babysitter element to what is a more expensive toy anyway.  I just thought it was interesting that the weapon tonnages matched, and heat/ammo actually both favor the true artillery piece.

That being said, I actually do have a 'mech artillery carriage...the UM-R60A Artillerymech.  ;D  Dump that AC/20 and a heat sink and you can fit a Thumper.  In that context it makes a little more sense: Urbies are cheap as chips, and the walking mobility combined with the jump jets gives them some options a normal gun carrier doesn't get.  When your range is measured in boards, who cares how slow you waddle?  Good objective to destroy in scenario play.

Anyway, artillery cannons are really underutilized, and they're low tech which makes that doubly criminal.  ;)  I tend to prefer the shorty Thumpers or Snipers though since the tonnage is way less onerous.  Can easily throw them onto a tank, too...

It's certainly got mobility and durability in its favor over Yet Another Urbanmech, that Arturion.  And I don't think there's an artillery crew alive that will ever find a reason to complain about being able to scoot faster after they shoot.

Thanks!  I liked the idea of a jump capable artillery carrier, and figured two tons of ammo would be enough between visits to the re-arming point...  ^-^
