Title: Nueva Castile's domestic BattleMechs: Jinete and Almogavar
Post by: mvp7 on 25 April 2021, 20:55:45
Here are couple BattleMechs I imagine the Nueva Castilian's impressive military industry might have been able to produce (in addition to the canon mech Reconquista)  in the early years of their long war against the Umayyad Caliphate. (Links to sarna article and earlier discussion of the Nueva Castile)

Soon after the Reconquista BattleMech had entered production, the Nueva Castilian military recognized the need for a faster and lighter BattleMech that could match the smaller Umayyad models in speed and agility. Asturias Royal BattleMech Yard was tasked with creation of this lighter BattleMech and after three long years of trial and error (as well as countless compromises) the result was Jinete BattleMech, first deployed in 2865.

Weighing 40 tons, the Jinete was powered by an Iberia Motors 145 ICE. With a top speed of 54 kph the new BattleMech was faster than the Reconquista, but still well below the original expectations. This was mainly due to the limitations of the conventional internal combustion engines which proved to be insufficient power source for fast BattleMechs.

Jinete’s main weapon was a Fabricas de Armas Reales LCM4 short range missile launcher, carried in the Mech’s right arm. The locally produced SRM launcher was fed ammunition from a ton of reloads in the Mech’s right torso through a dangerously exposed feed system which was easily rendered inoperable by incoming fire. For secondary armament the Jinete carried two Hispano-Star produced Amep-59 machine guns with one ton of ammunition mounted on its left arm. The BattleMech was protected by 9 tons of primitive Iron Hide Heavy armor. The electronics remained largely unchanged from the Reconquista with the exception of communications suite which was upgraded to a newer and more compact version.

The unexpectedly low top speed, together with the significant sacrifices in armor and firepower that had been made to achieve even that level of mobility, made the Jinete a fatally vulnerable and under-gunned design. It could never take on the reconnaissance and striker roles envisioned for it but still saw use in limited numbers, mainly in support of the heavy Reconquista BattleMechs. Jinete saw little success on the battlefields of Nueva Castilian reconquest and suffered from a (mostly well deserved) bad reputation right from the start of its relatively short time in front-line service.

The disappointing Jinete BattleMech had made it clear that internal combustion engines were an insufficient power source for BattleMechs. While the fusion reactors used in the Umayyad BattleMechs remained beyond the Nueva Castile’s limited manufacturing capabilities, an Asturian company Empresa Estrela managed to scale down an aerospace fission reactor to BattleMech scale in the late 2860’s.

In 2870 the first Almogavar BattleMech walked out of the assembly hall of the Asturia Nueva factory. The 50 ton Mech was powered by Empresa Estrela 240 Fis nuclear fission engine that was both its greatest strength and weakness. The new reactor allowed the Almogavar to move at a respectable 65 kph top speed and it powered the Mech’s main armament of two newly developed side torso mounted CETME LAS-1 medium lasers. As a backup armament the Almogavar carried two Amep-59 machine guns on its right arm with one ton of ammo in a mount similar to the one used on the earlier Jinete.

The heavy and highly radioactive fission engine was the source of countless challenges. The Almogavar was protected by 9.5 tons of primitive Iron Hide 2-Pb armor, specially designed to block harmful radiation. The armor was disproportionately concentrated around the Mech's center torso to protect the fission reactor while leaving other areas less protected. This armor layout, together with the heavy and over-sinked reactor itself, resulted in a high center of gravity which made the Mech notoriously unbalanced in rough terrain.

The fission reactor took several hours to start up and shut down safely and radiation made the maintenance of a damaged BattleMech a nightmare. The Almogavar pilots were issued radiation blocking Hazmat combat uniforms even though officially the radiation levels inside the cockpit remained within safe limits even under extended heavy action. Despite these reassurances, every Almogavar pilot would sit on top of a second Hazmat uniform folded on the seat to “protect their family heritage”.

Almogavars were deployed barely a decade after Nueva Castilians had captured and then reverse engineered their first BattleMech. A nuclear powered BattleMech was a great source of national pride and remarkable achievement for their mostly agrarian and (up until then) peaceful society. The Almogavar served in some way on most battlefields of the Reconquest, quickly replacing the Jinete in frontline service. During the 30th century, Almogavars would be moved to reserve as the more modern BattleMechs sold by the newly formed Hanseatic League replaced the primitive domestic models of the Nueva Castile’s early Reconquest. The highly radioactive remains of destroyed Almogavars were a common monument to the old battlefields of previously Umaayad occupied worlds and would sometimes remain abandoned and ignored for centuries.

I also made couple doodles of the mechs (sorry, I can't draw :D). My intention was the make Jinete look like a slimmer and stripped down derivative of the Reconquista while Almogavar is supposed to be a slightly more modern looking development with obviously heavy torso armor.

edit. Added a missing hand actuator; Fixed armor error; Swapped 1 SHS for more armor

I like the concepts. Only that I would name them differently.
Jinetes are light fast and nimble skirmish cavalry.
Almogavars were very aggressive light infantry that operated GREAT in rough terrain, and were feared for both their savagery and prowess. They were mountain people that wre regarded as bandits when not employed by the military.

As such qualifying those 2 mechs as almogavars and jinetes sounds peculiar. :) I would see them having monikers as a consequence. Maybe "Lame" for the Jinete and "Cherno" or similar for the Almogavar. A fision reactor is something.  Maybe they could be used to pollute Umayyad locations simply by forcing themselves ot be destoryed there. Kind of a suicide mech that plays havoc to enemy logistics and populations.

The background for both is great and very inspuring. Kudos to you sir.

Hah, yeah! I'd definitely expect both to have some nicknames more descriptive than the official names that reflect the hopes and dreams of the military and designers more than the actual end product ;D.
