Post Restoration Aurigan Built Battlemech

So in light of my continuing to build up a background to my slowly building Battletech: Restoration AU fanfiction story I have been wondering if anyone had any good ideas for a homegrown brand new Battlemech produced by the Aurigans in the years following the Civil War. Auks over at Spacebattles came up with an interesting design late last year. The MST-1F Mastiff. I really do not want to use someone's creation in this story therefore figured I ask here to help me build one for the story. Firstly a prototype version of said mech that becomes the main character's mech after the Coronation Day Massarce and the later perfected version that is produced after the end of the Civil War. Basically, the idea is that the Aurigans having not only a Mech Factory (sort of) on Mechdur but also sport the Esponisa Refit Yards on Coromodir. Therefore, doing something similar to how the Capellans managed to make their Cataphract. Also similar to how Auk did his Mastiff design. Therefore not really a new mech, but kind of, if that makes any sort of sense. Anyways have fun!

the impression i got of the Coalition is that it is much like the rest of the periphery, and somewhat behind the inner sphere proper when it comes to the more complex industrial stuff. so i'd imagine that a home grown coalition mech would be either a militiamech using an industrial chassis or a primitive. though i suppose that you could use similar fluff as the cataphract and have it being made from parts from several different mechs they could buy on the open market in bulk and combine.

weapons wise i'd expect autocannon or missiles to be the primary weapon.. since those are lower tech and thus easier to produce. backup weapons would be the same medium lasers used on the Vargr and Sleipnir vehicles.. either they can produce those themselves or can import enough of them to support vehicle production, which means they'd be available for other projects.

honestly the big thing is going to be determining *when* they start building this.. is this after the start of the technological recovery of the inner sphere in the late 2030's? or is this something they started before or during the civil war in the 3020's and just didn't finish until after? they probably wouldn't benefit much from the tech-revival directly (their main trade connections to the IS being through the capcon, which was slower to benefit) but with the surge in production in the IS as the helm core enables old factories to be fixed up would not only mean more components available (especially in the nearby FWL, which started earlier) but also the potential of being able to buy tooling and production machinery that was being phased out of the IS factories.

The Aurigan Restoration saw surprisingly heavy deployment numbers of the long out of production Crab medium mech. In the aftermath, it fell to the Coalition's primary mech manufacturer on Mechdur to try and devise a suitable replacement.

The Harrier is essentially a "professional frankenmech" using a combination of parts previously used for Shadow Hawks, Phoenix Hawks and Enforcers. It matches the Crab's weapon loadout successfully and retains the Shadow Hawk's Jump Jets for additional mobility, but technicians assigned to maintain it complain about number of niggling issues:

Edit: In case it wasn't clear this is essentially a riff of how many Crabs (and to a lesser extent Enforcers) I fought in my Battletech: Restoration play through, but I also think it's a reasonable take on the "medium Cataphract" concept.

I submit my old standby, the BLA-4F Blaster.

Pretty cheap, pretty capable. 200-rated engines aren't that uncommon, a 40-ton chassis is reasonably easy to build.

Actually a Clint variant (well, rebuild), but it’s arguably easier to base it on a Watchman when available.

ok so i'm going to go against my own original ideas, and go with a modded IS mech.
in this case, the Backjack. which Ceres metals produces at the time, but is very unpopular in the CCAF. so i figure that as the Capcon works to overhaul their factories using Helmcore based info obtained from the FWL (and espionage on the fedcom) they'd be willing to license out the plans and tooling for that to a third party in exchange for various trade deals in raw supplies the CapCon can't produce enough of themselves anymore, and with the idea that the third party company would produce and deliver allotments of spare parts to maintain the BJ-1's in the capcon's militia forces.
and then the Coalition factory starts building their own version on the side in small lots.

and it is basically a Wyvern.

Raised Eyebrow. Actually, the Aurigan Coalition has a few different major things that give them some ability in building their own Mechs and vehicles. The first being that they control the planet of Mechdur which is a former Capellean Industrial World with several different factories. While the game doesn't out right say that Mechdur has a Mech Factory but I am sure it does in some form. Then we have the Esponisa Mech Refit Yards on Coromodir VI which is pointed a couple of times in game capable of rebuilding Mechs and piecing together other mechs from salvage. They then have a few different systems that are mainly set up for mining like Artu and Enkra giving material to build stuff. Finally they have several systems that are said to have orbital stations and colonies including Artu and Coromodir VI itself. So I am quite sure the Coalition is quite capable of developing and building their own battlemechs.

In my own story, I have the Coalition only having the Esponisa Refit Yards online which is able to basically hand build new Stingers and a handful of new Phoenix Hawks that mainly built in smaller factories on Mechdur and a couple of other places in pieces which are then fully assembled at the Refit Yards. The Refit Yards are also capable of taking a full Battlemech and basically rebuilt that mech into another variant. Which is how Victoria is able to get that K2 Variant Catapult she has in the game. However, after the Restoration is able to bring down the Directorate the Coalition is able to finally bring Mechdur's own Mech Factory back online thanks in part to the actions of the main character and their mercenaries. They managed to raid a couple of rebuilt Mech Factories on a couple of the pretty much-abandoned worlds of the Rimward Frontier where they are able to bring parts to Mechdur to get their sole intact Mech Factory back online for the first time since the start of the Succession Wars. Hence, the Coalition would now be able to not only piece together wrecked mechs and build new mechs with the use of smaller feeder factories they are now capable of introducing for the first time their own mech design. Hence, the reasoning for this thread. Somewhat.

This one is also looking quite interesting. Though I was looking for somewhere around the 40 to 45 ton range. Still an interesting design all around from what I can actually understand from the specs.

There is also the huge supply of Dragon parts (where they came from I can't remember) the Aranos found during one of the campaign missions.  I'll see if I can put what I can put together for a decent line mech, since the Dragon is really a medium in a 60 runner's clothing. You could easily use it as a template for the Reach's version of the 55 ton BT trio.

It wouldn't be that hard on paper, really.  Dropping the whole thing in to 55 tons leaves you 1 ton over, so dropping the rear medium laser or one ton of ammo from the LRM or AC should accomplish the goal pretty easily. 

Offensively, you'd be looking at combining aspects of the Griffin and Wolverine, but limited to being ground-bound like a Centurion.

However the whole internal structure would need be restructured to its lighter frame, and in-universe that would be the biggest challenge.  Still a new structure, or repurposing one of the ubiquitous 3 with a new weapon load out and armor coverage along with giving it a new name wouldn't be too outside of the norm.

Refitted Dragon for the Aurigans

Remove AC 5 and two tons of ammo. Add 1 Large Laser to right arm. Keep LRM 10 and 2 tons of ammo split between both torsos. The write up of Mechdur does specify that they produce mech weapons. That is a far call from saying that they can produce entire mechs.

Same qith the espinosa Refit Yards. A refit yard and a yard that can build a mech from scratch are 2 different things...

given this is the age where new factories were nearly impossible, having a factory  (and the resulting tooling) would be important. i'd say the refit yards could hand build a new mech from parts at the rate of a few per year, but odds are they wouldn't be making their own parts (beyond weapons and a few basics) and would have to import stuff like chassis, engines, etc.

thus why i set mine in the 3030's where factory technology was on an upsurge thanks to the helm core.. it would be easier to obtain the bits and pieces needed to assemble a proper factory, as well as license out the tooling for the specific parts needed for a mech.

though given the heavy star league presence in the area, you could probably also fluff it as an adhoc factory made from the remnants of a star league facility or two.

Wasn't that Smithon? Since you face off against a Dragon during that mission and when you beat it you are informed that somehow the Directorate managed to stockpile a bunch of Dragon parts on the planet. That said. I would be interested in seeing such a mech?

That would be an interesting design. I could easily see it being an Aurigan primary frontline mech.

I have a couple of ideas on it. As mentioned the only real industrial might the Coalition has is on Mechdur along with a couple of small factories on other worlds. There is also a Jumpship slip at Mechdur, though I believe it only can repair ships not build more ships, an orbital dropship yard either on Coromodir VI or Coromodir V, the Pickerton Orbital Docks which were mentioned a couple of times in the game, and there are plenty of mining going on across the Coalition. I shall see about writing some sort of write up for the Defense Industry of the Aurigan Coalition when I can. There is a bit in the House Arano Sourcebook, like the mentioned jumpship maintenance slip, that I can expand on if given the chance.

Shrug. I agree the Mechdur entry in the Arano Sourcebook does indeed only say that the planet only producing mech weapons along with mech and tank armor through Aspero-Dinton Mining, but I am extending that to the production of Mech Parts as well. Along with the production of half-decent Aerospace Fighter along with plenty of Coventinal Fighters and VTOL units. I am having Mechdur have a Mech Factory because I do believe it was mentioned once in-game, somewhere around the time you liberate Panzyr which also includes Mechdur. However, in my story, it wouldn't be active instead relying on smaller feeder factories that produce mech parts which are then shipped to Coromodir which are then assembled at the Esponisa Refit Yards. It is only either during the war or maybe after it that Mechdur was able to get the factory working again due to parts that our player character managed to "acquire" from a secret factory someone reactivated on one of the abandoned worlds in the Rimward Frontier.

I actually had a bit of fluff I did during the early stages of planning for this and it had the Refit Yards actually at its heart simply a Turian Mech Refit Facility that was only for repair and maintaining Battlemechs. Which the Aurigans use to do the same over the years, however, it is only when House Esponisa managed to acquire some needed tooling and parts that saw the Refit Yards being upgraded into the mentioned hand building of mechs. This saw the Refit Yards going from the Cordia Mech Refit Yards to that of the Esponisa Mech Refit Yards in honor of House Esponisa.
