Overview

The Spahi was a proposed variant of the Tessen that was intended as a signature battlemech for the Eridani Light Horse. The ELH had become a premiere opponent to the Clans following their appearance in 3049. They had signed on to support the reborn Star League after the first Whitting conference in 3058. They had been a large part of the forces sent against Clan Smoke Jaguar during Task Force Serpent.

Comstar proposed to reward the Light Horse by rebuilding their strength following the extermination of the Jaguars. ELH units had borne the brunt of many of the combats during that conflict and had taken more casualties during it than they had sustained in the previous three centuries. New Precentor Martial of ComStar Victor Steiner-Davion intended to reward them with a signature battlemech only available to the units of the Light Horse.

Capabilities

The proposed base of the Spahi was a lightly modified version of the Tessen, still in development. Much of the features of the Tessen would be maintained, including the chassis, engine, main gun, and communications and targeting suites.

Some changes were requested by the ELH. Chief among these was the additional mobility provided by jump jets. The Spahi was intended to have a jump range of 180 meters. Adding to this mobility would have been the use of triple-strength myomer, which would have given the Spahi a theoretical tactical top speed of over 110 kph.

The improved NARC missile beacon was removed, as the ELH wanted this new unit to be as independent of resupply as possible. It and the medium pulse laser were removed and replace with a close-ranged combat array of a trio of extended-range medium lasers and a flamer for anti-infantry use. Lastly, Independence Weaponry suggested the use of a battlemech-scale sword to take further advantage of the use of the advanced myomer bundles.

To offset possible enemy use of advanced electronics a Guardian ECM system was mounted, with an available ECCM mode to allow the improved C3 computer to operate even in hostile environments. Because all of this new equipment was quite bulky, the Durallex ferro-fibrous armor was replaced by a less-bulky standard armor compound, with an additional ton and a half equipped to allow the Spahi to maintain equivalent protection.

History

All of this made for a highly mobile battlemech well suited to the Light Horse’s “hit and fade” preferred tactics. However, it was not to be. The outbreak of the Davion Civil War forced Victor Steiner-Davion to step down from his post as Precentor Martial. He was replaced by Precentor Martial pro-tem Gavin Dow, who saw the Spahi program as a waste at a time when Independence Weaponry was struggling to keep up with its production quotas for both the Com Guards and the Draconis Combine.

Unable to cancel the program, Dow instead refused to fund it and the project was shelved until 3067. At that time Victor Steiner-Davion returned to his post as Precentor Martial, but the Spahi program was unable to proceed before the outbreak of the Jihad.
