So with the recent workmech wendsday thread covering the ultralight HMX-1,-2,-3, and -3M Exo workmechs, i figured that it could use a workshop thread.. because challenges exist to be tackled, and coming up with variants for such a bare bones design is definitely a challenge.


for myself, i decided to see what you could do with a militiamech variation.. to get some literally dirt cheap combat units.
turns out with a little tweaking, you can get some interesting results. their survival rate would be not terribly great against real battlemechs but their price (and BV) is low enough you could afford to buy quite a few of them.

so to start, i took the HMX-3M, and stripped it down some. i removed the environmental sealing, which limits the environments it can deploy in, but saved a full ton. then switched the armor to Commercial grade and reduced it to one ton. this kept more or less the same number of armor points as the -3M, but saved another half ton of mass. the armor is only BAR5 but to be honest, given how few points each location has, anything that does more than 5 damage is going to go internal anyway. so switching the type doesn't really reduce your protection all that much. (except against something like a Rifle Cannon.. but anything able to carry those already outclassed an Exo to begin with)

with a ton and a half to work with you can actually replicate some of the handheld loadouts. and with the industrial TSM you can still use handhelds, so you can practically double your firepower. This did limit the placement of the weapons though, to leave the arms and torsos free for handheld use.

thus the HMX-4 came along, in three versions. i'd say give the unit the modular weapons quirk to allow for quick repair and modification, with fluff about the weapons being modules bolted onto mounting points on the outside, allowing for the mech to be more easily converted between types.

first one is a machinegun version, with twin LMG's and a generous half ton of ammo. the LMG's are in the legs, and the ammo is in the head, behind the heaviest armor. (though this is probably not very popular with pilots.)

the Second version is a 'fire support' version with a trio of rocket launchers.. one per leg and one in the head (presumably mounted on the hips and above the cockpit frame.) with only one heatsink firing all the rockets at once would probably force a shutdown.. but it also has the best damage output.

the third one is a magshot version.. with a leg mounted magshot and 50 rounds. likely works better in the marketing holovids than in practice, but ought to make a good harrasser if deployed in the right terrain.

and the 4th version is a non-combat version, but one that probably would sell the most examples of.. a Rescue variant that drops all the weapons for two sets of paramedic gear, a remote sensor dispenser, and a searchlight. making it a useful disaster response vehicle for anything short of a fire.

the 5th variant is, of course, a version for Fire departments. this is the only one that would not be convertible to the other variants, due to having the environmental sealing restored. it's only special equipment is the spotlight.. this mech would be largely used to help build firebreaks or haul supplies. (a handheld module with a sprayer and a ton of liquid storage would be likely as well, for directly fighting fires)

a possible variant of this one would be to replace the spotlight with two sets of paramedic equipment, allowing the mech to act as an ambulance able to wade through fire to cut off survivors. a half ton cargo bay could also be possible, to haul food and supplies to such survivors as well.



and just for kicks, a "high end" militia variant that mounts a fusion engine. with a full two tons of payload and a full set of free SHS, it mounts an ER Medium laser above the cockpit and a rocket pack on each leg..

Different take on an fusion-powered industrial version.  Uses a handy Leenex 60 fusion engine best known for use in the UrbanMech, and gets the weight for it from switching to 1.5 tons of commercial armor, increasing the protection to 36 points.

I'm honestly torn between keeping this as-is with the XPL-S under the cockpit, keeping the arms open for 1-ton Exo weapons pods, accepting the fact that it's not going to be able to carry one anyway when it transforms, going mixed IS/Clan tech, and instead mounting a micro pulse laser in the head and an ER small in the arm as its "gun pod" like the anime, or, even sillier, going Bimodal LAM (like the source anime), and just mounting an ERSL or micro pulse laser in the head, once again leaving the hands free for handheld weapons when in 'Mech mode.  Another option would be to drop to 4/6/3 to get a half-ton, since the Logan wasn't exactly the fastest in the air, anyway.

too bad quadvee's can;t be bipeds, you could do a garland from megazone 23

and data on the Logan is conflicting.,.there is no official stuff from the source anime, and the robotech version has changes specs pretty much everytime it appears in HG products. the current HG stuff from their robotech.com websites' "robopedia" certainly bears out the slower airspeed thing though.
