Gazelle Light recon VTOL
« on: 08 December 2020, 23:07:09 »
A very light 4ton helicopter, useful for recon and as a spotter for LRMs and other indirect fire weapons for less than 50,000 c-bills

Speed of 23/35 (you can cross 2 entire maps per turn!) carrying a Recon Camera that can be used not only for recon but also as a spotter with a low-tech TAG.

No wasted tonnage with armor: it is very hard to hit target and it is anyway too small to carry any useful amount of armor

Battle value is only 18pts but it can be a valuable addition to your combat forces!

You could also drop it to 3 tons for 25/38 speed...

Do not think it would ever be fielded by anyone . It is very fragile too small for a second crewman so recon camera may have a  penalty.  Lastly you are putting an expensive trained person that actually costs more in tiime and money to train and replace than the hardware you have him fly . That is against every principle in Battletech ever had . Even a Savannah master does not do that .

The silly part is that it's so fast you don't really need much piloting skill. No need to flank! All you need is a so-so gunnery skill to use the camera.

I'll take a few hundred.  Dedicated recon platforms that are hard to hit are USEFUL.
"If ye love wealth better than liberty,
the tranquility of servitude
better than the animating contest of freedom,
go home from us in peace.
We ask not your counsels or your arms.
Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you.
May your chains set lightly upon you,
and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."-Samuel Adams

flying above ground you don't have much other consequences - just remember to not maneuver close to the map edges.

This is mainly a recon asset and using the recon camera as a low-tech TAG is secondary capability. For only 18 BVs and 50k cbills you can field dozens of them to compensate any lack of firing accuracy. And it so hard to hit that it probably does not worth the ammo cost to kill it

You can also use it to spot for artillery and stay beyond firing range.

I could see this as a news or racing helicopter that was drafted to help scout against an enemy raiding force.  Grab about a dozen or so, send them out on different bearings, and whichever doesn't return tells you where the enemy is (or had a bad pilot).  Just make sure that the spotters understand that if there is bad weather they are supposed to report the bad weather too, not just 'no contact'.

For 50k C-Bills, it could also be a home-made sport helicopter, something that is built over several months in someone's garage.

You really want at least 10 points of armor (0.625 tons).  That stray SRM, MG, or Infantry Squad (on average) merits at least that level of protection.  Fractional Accounting can help you get there...  ^-^
