Big Boy Mech Hauler - to Match Stephen Huda's Art
« on: 25 November 2021, 14:17:01 »
This is the TRO for the truck I posted art on the Fan Art board. Art done by Stephen Huda, link below. I see this truck relying on lift hoist rules to haul around a max 70 tons at convoy speeds (MP 3/5).

Not bad, though I'll note 2.5 tons of armor gets you 10 points all around...  8)

Does it lose speed hauling 70 tons?  The lift hoists and cargo bay covers it for 4/6 I thought

idea weenie

Enough capacity to carry up to the lighter Heavy Mechs, and small enough to fit in a Light Vehicle Bay.  Very nice

Total Warfare, page 136:
Quote
Units suffer no movement penalty when carrying cargo up to half their tonnage. When carrying cargo greater than half its tonnage, reduce the unit’s Walking/Cruising MP by 1.

So it can carry up to 45 tons with no penalty, and drops to 3/5 when carrying more (up to 70).

The funny thing is another pair of Lift Hoists would get it up to 114 tons of cargo.  I could fluff that as the two hoists in the art being "reinforced".

Yes you can. I didn't bother because I have another design for the assault weight stuff.

After thinking about it there is a fatal with just 2 lift hoists; mass hauled is equal to the mass on the vehicle, plus cargo mass. So this version is limited to carrying a 50 ton mech, not 70 ton. Unless the 70 ton mech in question was in pieces.
So add 2 more lift hoists to the truck, see below.

This renders the larger mech hauler obsolete. But a 35 ton mech hauler has the 70 ton limit I'm looking for.

Honestly, I'd shave the cargo down a ton to up the infantry compartment and the armor by half a ton each.

I've been thinking of making some of the cargo space tool storage as well.

Well, if you shave it all the way down to 10 tons even, you could have AC/20 resistance is all directions, a full ton infantry bay, and a half ton for tools...

You have a problem with command use of assets if you need to be able to resist an AC20. I'm think 3 tons of tools. There's at least 1 exoskeleton in there, welders, cutting torches, maybe an engine hoist or two.

"Mechbusters are a thing, but if you think its too much, I'd still advocate for PPC resistance at 2.5 tons of armor...

10 AP on all 4 sides is reasonable in my opinion.
1 ton for an infantry compartment, for a full tech squad plus downed vehicle/mech crew is reasonable too.
I don't see a need for a full platoon's worth of techs.
