Overview

The Kanga was a bit of an odd duck. It was commissioned by Bull Mitchell in the 2650s as an attempt to make a scout vehicle with greater mobility and firepower than a light mech could possibly manage. In that it succeeded, but it required such advanced technologies that it took the machine learning genius of Nirasaki Computers to make a navigational and terrain handling computer to allow it to land safely.

Regardless, the end result was what Mitchell had hoped for, a hovertank with a 180-meter jump range, a top speed in excess of 120 kph on open ground, and the weapons load equivalent to a medium mech. This new tank allowed the Star League Defense Forces Vehicle Corps to operate in terrains that they otherwise could not have, wielding firepower that the forces of the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere could not compete with.

It also left them with something else. Unlike most vehicles, the Kanga was capable out of the box of performing aerial drops. During the bush wars of the late 27th Century this lead to a few situations where Vehicle Corps dropships were able to insert Kangas into areas that they would not have otherwise been able to, resulting in operational surprise. These incidents lead to a desire for more powerful vehicles that could perform similar drops.

The Vehicle Corps had a few desired features beyond the ability to perform a drop. The new vehicle should be able to withstand at least one heavy autocannon hit to any location. It should carry a particle projection cannon, the most powerful energy weapon in the known galaxy at the time, and it should have something that the Kanga did not, a turret. Additionally they asked that the new vehicle posses a more durable motive system than the Kanga, which often found itself immobilized by otherwise light hits to the skirting of the plenum chamber.

Capabilities

Mitchell proposed the Bull nearly immediately. Bull Mitchell himself had considered that the SLDF Vehicle Corps might have an interest in something along the lines of what they ended up requesting, and had left engineers with a rough drawing of the sort of vehicle he wanted them to create.

It would be in some ways a simpler vehicle than the Kanga, in that it would trade the sometimes finicky hover system for an 8x8 wheeled chassis with a layout similar to one that had been in use for centuries. Bull figured that while this would prevent the new vehicle from being used over water, it would allow it to take a stronger punch and remain combat viable. To ensure this, the Bull would be equipped with a new formula of armor. Eight and a half tons of ferro fibrous armor would ensure its survival on the battlefield.

For punch Bull had anticipated the desire for the particle projection cannon, as well as the desire for such a weapon to be given the expanded field of fire of the turret. To make such an energy intensive weapon work practically required the use of a fusion engine, which would also include the necessary heat sinks for the weapon.

For close in firepower, Bull desired that a similar loadout to the Kanga be carries. Like the Kanga a quad-tube vertical-launch SRM launcher would be mounted, as well as a machine gun for anti-infantry work. In this case however the lighter mass of the fusion plant meant that a second quad launcher could be mounted. To enhance friendly fire support, target acquisition gear was mounted co-axial to the main gun.

The use of the fusion plant, an advance compared to the Kanga, allowed the Bull a top speed of nearly 90 kph. It mounted 5 jump jets, with each jet mounted behind each corner wheel and its suspension assembly, and a fifth directly below the center of mass. While this should have given the Bull an unmatched mobility advantage against anything it would likely come across, these jets would prove its downfall.

History

The mounting for the jets had been designed in an attempt to simplify the Bull compared to the Kanga. The Kanga’s single most expensive component was the Nirasaki computer that allowed those jets to function, as they controlled the Kanga’s naturally unstable profile while in the air.

Engineers had designed the Bull to be much more stable. Considerable effort had been made to balance the vehicle in such a way that it would naturally remain upright while the jets were in operation. It was thought that by tying the jump jet assembly and the suspension assemblies together it would allow a much simpler computer to handle the load, as the wheeled suspension would not need to land in such a way as to maintain pressurization of the plenum chamber of the hover system.

The result was a disaster. Mitchell tried for years to find a supplier who could make a tire able to the high temperatures of the jump jet operation. When they did find one, those tires had other issues such as insufficent grip on smooth road surfaces, poor off-road performance, or tread separation under lateral load.

The Bull project was in its initial development stages for nearly three decades before Mitchell was ready to send a prototype to testing. That prototype ultimately failed because repeated jumps would often derail the turret bearings, locking into whatever direction it was pointed when in landed. Subsequent prototypes showed other deficiencies, to the point where the final revision of the vehicle was not ready to enter production until 2761, 5 years before the Amaris Coup.

Few Bulls were produced by Mitchell before the primary production line fell to Amaris forces during the invasion of Graham IV. This production line, along with all other Mitchell production was turned to the production of armaments specifically approved by Stefan Amaris, and then were then destroyed during the liberation of Graham IV in 2775.

The last known Bull was destroyed during the 2nd Succession War, though it is speculated that a least one battalion’s worth left the Inner Sphere with Alexsandr Kerensky during Operation EXODUS. No Bulls or vehicles derivative of the Bull have been seen with Clan forces.

I'm confused. Is this a Wheeled vehicle as the text indicates, or a Hover as the design block states?

Well spotted. It seems that MML reverted the motive type and I forgot to check it. I have given it the correct stats for a wheeled vehicle, and updated the fluff accordingly.

Thanks!

I am always a fan of jumping vehicles.
