Ultimately the FCE is an economy  for defensive  units . Offensively the operational radius puts hard limits where you can land in an objective raid.  That can be truly limiting.

It's actually the other way around.  If you have a fusion engine in the army you can conduct ISRU fuel production for FCE anywhere there's water.  To run an ICE army you have to bring in fuel from off world until you take control of the local petroleum refining infrastructure.  If there actually is any: some planets may not have enough petroleum to be worth using for fuel.  ICE is fine defensively provided you have petroleum because you control the infrastructure, but try to take it on campaign and you learn why Defiance's fusion tanks were so popular even though they only used their reactors to run a small laser and sometimes a flamer.

It's not hard to make an ICE that runs on Hydrogen. In a piston engine you have to be careful with the ignition, but a gas turbine doesn't require much change.

With a bit of lateral thinking, you don't even need extra water. Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cells basically act like a rechargeable battery: once the cell is out of fuel, apply a current across the terminals and it splits the water into H2 and O2 again. This reaction can even happen in a sort of 'regen-braking' mode, charging from the motor-become-generator when slowing down. Further, it is remarkably fast, switching modes in less than a second. (In my fic, because of the tainted atmosphere, all fuel-cells on-planet are of this type.)

What holds it back from application IRL? As far as the research I've read says, it's the cost of the catalysts and the difficulty of making the diffusion membrane equally good at combining and electrolysing. H2 is also tricky to store. Plus, these days, Li-on batteries are Good Enough that it's pivoting that way, at least for electrically-powered transport.

As for combat vehicles, I did see mention of a fuel-cell testing initiative by US Army's Ground Vehicle Systems Centre.

The thought process behind the Vali was, "The Taurians are being difficult. We can import the Arrow launchers and ammunition in time but we're just going to have to mount them on whatever." Some of what came out of the workshop in limited numbers were wheeled rocket artillery, that by most accounts served with distinction in the Reunification War. Those improvised vehicles would later be turned into a production vehicle by Veridian Dynamics.

Four-fifty hundred years later and parsecs away, the same need consumed the soldiers and engineers fighting the Clans. This refit of the Hetzer assault gun replaces the AC/20 with an Arrow IV launcher, which, while it almost matches it in mass, still needed extensive remodelling to increase elevation.

The space for the autocannon rounds also needed extending, eventually carrying four tons of homing rockets. Now almost a metre longer, they then used a Jones fuel-cell engine to save enough space that a sensor intelligence team could be placed in the back. To assist them, Lindbald MGs were added front and back, controllable from inside the crew cabin or troop compartment. Six tons of StarShield armour gave it as much protection as a light tank. Finally, a CASE kit was applied to all ammunition bins.

Some of the first batches used a turret for the AIV system, to aid in targeting. However, it was only made in single-figure numbers, as it drained supplies of spare parts for battle tanks, and a pure artillery piece was judged to need some ability to defend itself and dig in.

T68 medium tank. Originally I tried to fit a missile battery as well but it ended up way heavier than I wanted it, so it turned into a down-armored Schildkröte with extra speed. :-\

You do that you get the fuel penalty without the weight savings.  The low caloric density of hydrogen is what it represents.

Except CBT only tracks weight. H2 is an extremely good fuel/weight.

Personally I just ignore the engine names. In my mind the FCE is actually a gas turbine. IRL turbines are lightweight/fuel hungry while fuel cells are heavy/fuel efficient.

Fuel isn't tracked by weight, though, except for aerospace units.  It's abstracted as part of the engine.

Unless you're building support vehicles.  Campaign Operations also gives an estimate so monthly fuel costs can be calculated for combat vehcles.

This combat vehicle, a lucky find in a long-defunct planetary garrison base, was a previously unknown variant of the Pollux given a Jones fuel cell in place of the GM fusion engine. Why it was requested is possibly explained by the presence of CASE, and a substantial increase in armour to 9.5 tons. It uses Ardan Ex standard plate, a marque that was only made on one planet. The reason is unknown: the base was several jumps away from Ardan Composites, and would have accrued a significant markup. Researchers are looking into the manufacturer.

Lacking its energy armament, its sole anti-infantry weapon was a Starflash small laser. Thankfully, all other weaponry and electronics were present and functional, though the disposal squad had to be called in to defuse the munitions that were centuries past being viable. Hand-fabricating new ammunition to spec for testing showed the Sniper artillery and LB-10X autocannon had lost none of its condition or potency.

For some, the Devil's Flashlight is a reminder that some things that even the Spheroids found too insane to contemplate were "Tuesday" to the Clans. For others, (mostly to the degraza and freebirths who are forced to drive these) a reminder that though diminished, Clan Hell's Horses still has power. To anyone ambushed by one, it is a quandary over whether to shoot it before it fires and hope it does not explode over you, or try to get away and suffer its wrath.

The logic that led to these monsters was simple: create basic fuel-cell chassis, slap as many chemical lasers as one turret will carry on top, fill with ammunition until it cannot hold any more, and you have a weapon that will make everyone nervous, even allies. The application of armour with CASE is almost an afterthought; even if crews survive a hit that penetrates its ammunition bin, the sheer power of the vented explosion means the chassis is inevitably immobilised, and the toxicity means the humans inside have to scramble inside hazmat suits and stay put until the tank and battlefield is decontaminated - often not an option.

When one of these does manage to fire, it is even more terrifying than an SRM carrier, since the lasers have zero travel-time and they are programmed to focus on one spot. The first report mentioned an ancient Locust being slagged by a "death beam", and indeed, an unstaggered salvo seems like a green bar-shaped star has popped briefly into existence. Malfeas' that have unleashed a full volley in this manner are identifiable by the scorching on the front from the backscatter, though severe overheating in this mode means that like the Ontos, it usually volley-fires, though in arrays of 4 lasers per shot.

The Demon "Stator" (the project lead was a fan of bad puns) was meant to become a defensive tank that could be sold to Periphery powers. Unfortunately, the project was killed before it entered full production: SLDF commanders did not appreciate the fact that their key fire-support CV could be replicated on the cheap, made more affordable for rogue elements and sold to restive nations, while Periphery procurers balked at the novel fuel-cell engine.
The experimental vehicle was nevertheless a capable machine, using the same M-7 Gauss Rifle, ammo bin, turret and electronics as its bigger brother, as well as the armour protection and CASE. It had started as a straight swap, but a smaller chassis was fabricated once the Tingli FCE showed that bulky shielding was unnecessary, and the cost savings considerable, as it used over 75% of the standard Demon's parts, including the front-mounted Harpoon-6 SRM launcher. The Medium Lasers were, unfortunately, taken off, with only an Armstrong MG in the bow as crowd control.

Made from a bare Rayburn chassis, the Dragonbreath was a dedicated smokescreen launcher utilising two Mackenzie Lofter 4-tube mech mortars. If it expended all of its four tons of smoke ammunition at once, it could cover an entire battlefield in thick smoke in under a minute. One ton was given over to alternate ammunition to give the Dragonbreath some 'fire', usually airburst.

While lightly-armoured with seven tons StarSlab II, and moving at a slow 54 km/h, this was seen as an acceptable compromise for a long-range support vehicle. A machine-gun with half a ton of ammo was added to the turret to provide anti-infantry capability, should any sneak in under its minimum range.

Lingering fondness for the old "mobile roadblock" Soarece MBT was given as the reason for the "Mighty Mouse", a FrankenVehicle rebuild of the newly-introduced Ontos that was produced in small numbers. It uses as many of the old superheavy's parts as possible, mainly the turret containing the Imperator AC/10 and AC/20, alongside a pod of three Longfire LRM5s replacing the AC/2. Extensive reinforcing of the turret ring and structure was needed to carry a mass intended for a tank twice its size, not to mention the re-purposed armour plate. Twenty tons of its StarShield A were mounted, layered in overlapping stacks just to fit them on the smaller chassis.

Unfortunately, the original speed of the Ontos could not be sustained, as the new turret traversal drive, machine-guns on all sides, remodelled lower crew compartment, air-con and waterproofing for the amphibious capability took up so much space that, even with the removal of the old ICE and cooling circuitry, the engine was cut down further by a retired hydroponics engineer to make room.

What came out the other side of this chopping and changing was an impressively tough defensive tank, with fair to good ammo endurance, but less long-range firepower than the Behemoth.

I'd have rather stuffed an LRM-15 w/ 16 reloads into that triple LRM-5 spot, dumped an AC/10 ammo load for the ability to cover the tonnage to double the MG spots. Even 200 rounds is too much, plus you have a free SHS... why not spot a Small Laser or even a Vehicle Flamer with ammo in the Turret by dropping safely a ton of armor.

Also have you checked Heavy Industrial Armor for the cheapness factor? Same BAR 10 protection, same point count, just cheaper ( in fluff still costs the same 10K per ton ).

Mega-armour and big cannon is the 'hat' of this little rodent, as is sufficient ammo to keep shooting for a while; I couldn't bring myself to lower either further. More MG for a little less armour can be a field-mod. Edit:  I realised it would have also made the turret heavier.

SL sadly requires a Power Amplifier on top, but the V. Flamer could be an option.

The thought behind multiple LRM5s is multi-target plinking, like the AC/2 it replaces, but more of it.
