Fuel-Cell vehicles

Fuel-cell engines are great. What started as a concept of these engines becoming more popular on a fusion-poor planet kind of ballooned; I have made a lot of tanks and other vehicles. There are, though, far too many to ever show off in the context of the fic that they inspired.

Thus, this thread is for me, or anyone else, to showcase their FCE designs. Whether refits of canon designs, inspired by canon or original creations, post 'em here!


I'll start off with a tank that is inspired by one of the few canon FCE vehicles: the Soarece.

Designed by a student of military history at Princefield Military Academy, the hypothetical Capybara tank was meant to address the fundamental flaw in the Free World League's Soarece - its incredible weight.

While she acknowledged that at 175 tons (over forty of that assigned to armour) it was supposed to be an unassailable mobile anti-mech bunker, her thesis concluded that they would have been much more cost-effective and fearsome with a whole lance of her design. ("...the original would have been more effective being airdropped on a cluster of battlemechs than acting like a Main Battle Tank...")

Indeed, the warload is identical: an Imperator Smoothie AC/2, Imperator B AC/10 and Imperator Zeta AC20 are all placed inline in the turret, with an Armstrong Minigun to the side. A 270 Jones fuel-cell engine propels it to a proposed 54 km/h, comparable to other assault vehicles of the time. Also comparable was the armour load, a respectable 16 tons of Starshield III. What could not be duplicated was the healthy stores of ammunition for the guns - it only carried enough for 15 and 20 salvos, respectively, of the AC20 and AC/10. The AC/2 and MG were still sufficiently stocked, though.

(The student then goes on to criticise the newly-acquired Ontos, proposing a radical redesign involving a 75-ton chassis and fuel-cells.)

Created when the fusion plant line suffered a disruption, this experimental version of the well-established Patton tank was a classic case of feature-creep. At first, it was meant to simply evaluate the possibility of fuel-cell engines on ammunition-heavy designs. Then a MML-9 copied from captured Blakist hardware, with a hand-made Artemis IV fire-control, was added alongside a LB 10-X autocannon. The reduction in armour load was solved by changing over to expensive Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armour - 10.5 tons of the stuff. Topping the technology sundae was an anti-missile system sourced from who-knew-where. CASE protected all the ammo bins.

A straight upgrade in weapons range, versatility and accuracy from the original, it was nevertheless over half a million C-bills more expensive than the base model, and the advantages of the LBX over the Patton Ultra were considered to be not worth the loss of damage. The MML, while able to load a wide range of missiles, could only actually utilise the Artemis system with specialised and expensive ammunition. Even the engine came under fire for being a step backwards, reattaching the engine to yet another supply line, never mind that it was a regenerative model that could be recharged from any other fusion-powered vehicle or BattleMech.

It never made it to full production, though some Lyran planetary militia placed orders that were honoured after the Jihad.

Oh wow, I never even considered you could pull the 'intermediate Scorpion/Vedette' trick with the Bulldog. That's really cool! The picture looks very purposeful too.

I have been a proponent of a 3072 TRO on just Fuel cell combat vehicles . Designed a Vedette Moon Strider with a fuel cell and environmental sealing 148 py of heavy Ferro fibrous armor light AC 2 , Thunderbolt  5 , TAG,and a small X-PULSE laser in a turret.  Threw in CASE and a hitch came out nice . At 50 tons it fits in a light vehicle bay . Replaced a lance of TAG spotters with a company of these.

Vedette, you say? The LPPC is a very useful gun on a FCE vehicle, providing ammo-less ranged power for a reasonable tonnage. And then we can add a LAC/5 beside it for twice the original firepower. Plus some missiles. ;)

Nice version but armor is a bit thin . Light PPC , Light AC 2 , and Thunderbolt all have the 6/12/18 range brackets  . TAG and small X-PULSE laser I chose should the try to get in the Thunderbolt minimum range. Precision ammo also halves the number of shots . 22 for L AC 2 : 10 for Light AC 5 . I like the two waves of 6 with the second wave towing LRM 10 launchers providing smoke and semi guided ammo . Their is a reason I added a trailer hitch.

138 points isn't that terrible. About 8.5 tons standard, it should be able to take about as much fire as 35-ton mech I'd say. Which matches up pretty well with its armament. Plus it does carry an AMS so it sould be able to take a few more hits in ordinary fights. Mostly it has about twice the medium-range firepower of LAC/2+TB5. :)

Logistics wins wars. With this in mind, the Gun Runner was built to fly in, drop off a container of supplies and ammo, and fly out before it could be targeted. 4.5 tons of armour is lighter than its pilots have come to expect, and it is minimally armed with a single forward-firing Machine Gun. It is fitted with a flotation hull so that, with a customised mission module, it may resupply the wet navy and army alike, drop off and pick up a scout boat, or take part in amphibious assaults.

The Poker was Lightspeed's answer to the Pike. While the three AC/2 were adequate for sniping at great distances, when used as an anti-air platform it left something to be desired in terms of damage output. If pirate forces were brave or foolhardy enough, an ASF could wade through the flak cordon with a better-than-50/50 chance of survival.

So the designer ripped them out of an ex-ComStar unit and stuck them, along with a salvaged AC/10, into a larger chassis. Ensuring the heavier turret traversed fast & accurate enough that the transplanted tracking hardware did not lag behind caused nightmare after nightmare, but with effort, it was soon solved.

The result was a more potent close-in threat with no minimum range and greater armour than the Pike. Three tons of flak ammo were usually loaded in the AC/10's magazine, and four for the AC/2s. A token front-mounted machine gun in a ball mount was added.

CASE was applied.

The only downside was cost: nearly three times that of the Pike, a lance of these was all the militia could ever afford.

Over in my Smokin' Tanks thread I've got a very similar wheeled ICE. About 60% of the price. FCEs definitely requires a bit more in the budget!

However it really turns the balance in favor of combat vehicles, so I use it with some restrictions. So, I use it mainly in a medium weight range (35-55tons) to have tracked vehicles with a decent 5/8 speed. Beyond this size, the price tag becomes a downside.

Fusion is usually better than FCE unless you go all in with IDF weapons or don't carry guns at all. Those free SHS saves 5-10 tons, a FCE still weights 80% of a SFE.

No argument. This is definitely 'boutique', low-production-run stuff.

Though as soon as I posted that, I realised I could shrink that Poker down to 75 tons, delete a ton of AC/2 ammo, scrape off one-and-a-half tons armour and have basically the same thing. Oops.

Yes, though it's not quite as ridiculous as removing the vehicle fusion engine mass tax would be. And at least it isn't as expensive as XL engines. In fact, they're almost on-par with Light FE, but three times less expensive. On that note:


In an alternate universe this was the successor to the Behemoth name. The main gun was a Norse Storm Gauss Rifle with two tons of ammo, while a massive array of Defiance Meteor Thunderbolt-5 launchers with seven tons of ammo provided fire-support. For close-in, four one-shot RL10s dealt with power armour.

In a diversion from the original plans, Heavy Ferro-fibrous armour was used to maximise protection. To bring costs down a common Applied Hydroponics regenerative fuel-cell was used in place of the proposed XL engine. It could be recharged from any fusion engine or refuelled from any aerospace facility.

The fly in the ointment was the rather pitiful ammo endurance, with only twelve full salvos for the T-5s, and sixteen for the Gauss.

An advanced-technology prototype, this was the first flying vehicle since the SLDF Kanga hovercraft. Based upon the Clemens, not only was the autocannon upgraded to an LB-10X with two tons of ammo, and the engine changed to a Jones fuel-cell, four Vehicular Jumpjets were added. An extra fuel tank had to be added, as the hydrogen used in the closed cell could not be used to fuel the jumpjets.

In its first rolling test flight with three thrusters, it flipped upside down to land on its turret, exploding in a fireball when the jet fuel mixed with the fuel-cell's oxygen. Thankfully, as it had been fully automated and using dummy mass for the weapons, the designers were not deterred. Telemetry before the crash suggested a fourth jumpjet would provide sufficient pitch control. To fit it, the 6 tons armour had to remain, though the use of Ferro-fibrous gave a slight increase over the original protection. This time, CASE was used.

After that, solving the excessive suspension wear and the cannon mountings shaking loose upon landing was merely difficult.

Its first full trial occurred on 3054. It jumped on top of buildings, drove off ramps and cliffs, and blasted simulated mechs with pinpoint accuracy. It was approved for limited production in 3058, and proved a moderate success on less Mech-heavy planets. What was not shown off, but placed on the first page of the manual and written into the License Agreement, was the admonition to never fire the autocannon off-centre in mid-air. Late in the test cycle, it was found that the computer's sensors were affected by deviations in local weather. When temperatures were below freezing or above 40 deg. C, the recoil from firing under ascent could set off a feedback cycle in the fly-by-wire that could cause overcorrection in the thrust, and eventually an euphemistically-termed "turnover event".

I can see a push in fuel cell use in places like ( Black) Luthean where the pollution is so high it is incorporated in the nickname of the place . Probably would increase the very sad average life span on the world .

Using a near end-of-life spare chassis from a 'real' Alacorn, this was seen as a path to obviate the need for valuable XL engines in vehicles, as it was noted that the power-draw of the rifles was well below what the reactor could output, even under full acceleration. A supplier of backup power systems for dropships was commissioned to make the fuel-cell powerplant, while approx. half a ton of weight was removed from the chassis by leaving out the NBC gear. The turret gained the same amount of weight-reduction, thanks to the lighter and more compact Pattern X gauss rifles, which also offset the increase in engine bulk. Altogether, five tons of mass was shed, even with the expansion of the ammo bin to six tons.

It was hoped that the weight-reduction program would reduce stress upon the tracks, which the occupying Clan noted caused frequent stops for maintenance and track-tensioning. It worked, and yet the Clan administrators were mystified when the indigenous crews preferred the older tank.

Intended to "evaluate the usability of FCEs in ballistics-heavy AFVs", the experimental "Nine-Ex" of the venerable Challenger series of tanks used proven weaponry to provide a spread of long-range fire from a variety of sources.

While it was by all accounts a success, the fall of the Star League and subsequent economic depression put paid to any plans of mass-production.

This foundtech refresh of the popular Sultan tank, despite its ferro-fibrous armour, is no better protected. It is, however, much more capable of advancing with heavy mechs on a modern battlefield, thanks to its replacement of the standard ICE with a more powerful (and more expensive) GM Hydrolox fuel-cell. The other half of the equation that makes it even more feared are the dual Oriente Model O LB-10X autocannons. The deepened 5-ton ammunition bin gives it versatility, allowing it to carry a decent amount of cluster munitions alongside the normal AP. CASE is applied.

The fact that it costs half a million C-bills more than a Patton means it is not half as common as the original Sultan.

The oversized Bohktet APC combines excellent armour, reasonable speed, close-range support weaponry and a capacious 8-ton infantry compartment. Primarily intended to transport multiple support-weapon teams, the "Bucket" has also seen use in transporting ammo loaders and their industrial exoskeletons. It can also, we are reliably informed, carry cargo.

Just before full production of the Vidar came about, a reformulation of the boondoggle of a vehicle was quietly ordered by Benson & Bjorn. The chassis could not be changed, so instead a single Large Chemical Laser was removed, the forward turret cut down, and the engine compartment hastily enlarged to accommodate a 225-rated fuel-cell. It was fitted with its own ECM suite to combat the increased use of ECM on the battlefield. Half a ton was left, and it was used to up-armour the dual turrets.

Though it had less up-front firepower now, its greater speed let it use that more effectively. While it was still surplus to requirements when compared to the established Axel IIC, the initial (and only) production run performed admirably in its garrison role.

Lightspeed's assistant designers inherited their boss' quirkiness. Which meant strange things could happen with home-made moonshine, a spare Scorpion chassis, a fuel-cell refit kit intended for a 'Mech, some hacked motors with the limiters removed and an entire crate of 14.5mm calibre machine guns fresh from the factory.

The Bullet Scorpion was the result. Eight Lightspeed MGs, arranged in an array of four each side of the turret, were fed by two tons of CASE-protected ammo.
The firepower was undeniable: the testing range had to be refurbished after the sheer amount of bullets demolished the targets and shattered the armour plating at the back.

The over-driven motors and the Applied Hydroponics 150 FCE propelled it to nearly 100 km/h, fitting its proposed role of anti-infantry counter-raider, no matter how silly it was to try to reach point-blank range. (Damn joke is what it is. Glad they're showing initiative, though - Designer) Even with 6 tons of armour, it was a dicey proposition. The higher current required an extra radiator to prevent the waste heat from burning the motors out at full load.

I think I'd have gone for the full 10 MGs with only 1 ton of ammo...  It still doesn't have the armor needed to last longer than that.  And I might have gone with LMGs instead for the reach.

Part of the paradigm I was building most of these under was 'introtech + FCE + CASE', so that's why it's that way. The extra ammo is useful for the optional rapid-fire MG rules.

Interestingly, I tried 10 MGs and ran out of crits; 9 MGs are possible.

Not sure I'd want to drive a hovertank in a city, but the Magshots have enough range to be useful in the open too...  :thumbsup:

Well, you only need to make a PSR when flanking. 10 cruise MP leaves you quite a bit of room to move without any risk. :)

Thought after some consideration I think it would actually be better with a bit fewer guns...

Replace two of the MagShots with a TAG, drop a ton of armor (21/16/11/16), add a TC. >:D
