Shahin (formerly Hisan) IFV
« on: 23 January 2022, 08:57:26 »
Scarborough Limited had a series of successful hover tanks on their hands in the mid-30th century, and saw no reason to stop development after the Saladin's 2942 introduction.  For their next entry into the market, the design engineers went back to the Saracen, and set about making room for infantry.  Dropping two of the SRM launchers and swapping the LRM-10 for a pair of LRM-5s not only made room for a full platoon, but the lower weight of the turret also provided for Paramedic equipment and a bit more armor protection.  To maximize flexibility, the ammunition bins were divided in half, ensuring commanders could load smoke, inferno, fragmentation, or other rounds without losing the option for conventional HE. With the same speed as Scarborough's other hover tanks, it was a perfect complement, but the Hisan Shahin faced stiff competition from the heavier (and twice as expensive) Maxim.  Scarborough eventually solved that problem by licensing the Maxim design itself.  With both designs in production, Scarborough could service the full spectrum of potential customers, though the Maxim continued to prove an easier sell to over eager procurement officials.  The Hisan's Shahin's parts commonality with the Saracen, Scimitar and Saladin made it more popular with exhausted logistics personnel sphere-wide, but their lesser influence in procurement decisions rarely prevailed.

I like this.  and I like your fluff.

I've always been a sucker for families of combat units instead of having separate designs for every different (or even for the same) role, and this complements the S-family perfectly.
I'm a bit split on fractional accounting, realism (such as is possible in a game of stompy robots) asks for it, OTOH it seems a bit unfair compared to canon designs. I guess you found a happy medium by using half the fractional tonnage for what is essential a RPG/campaign device.
Good thinking on the various "tool" ammo types that make the Hisan a fine force multiplier.
I tend to prefer squad size bays, but that is just personal taste.

Well written fluff. Is the name Arabic for "Horse" ?

Exactly!  Google Tramslate FTW!

As far as Fractional Accounting: once I divided the ammo bays for versatility, it was an obvious way to "force multiply" the infantry!  8)

Actually I learned it from Chess literature  :)

Hmmm... Can't find the IFV version I made of the Saracen a while back... :(

I just swapped the LRM10 for a LRM5 and dropped half the ammo to get 4.5 tons carrying capacity. Don't remember what thread it was but I know there were some other variants posted.

I felt the LRM-5s were better for Smoke ammo than SRM-2s, but that's just my opinion...

I found a possible "S" name for the Hisan: "Shahin".  It literally means "charger", which is an archaic English term for "mount".  Thoughts?  :)

Unsure. Translating Shahin back to English gives Freighter, Loader, Shipper...
