So I watched Patlabor II last night, and got some ideas from its 'Hellhound' Gunship. Sadly, can't quite add a 40mm vulcan (basically a RAC/5) to a BT style VTOL and still pack in the missiles & rockets. Oh well. So I settled for alternatives.


Inner Sphere idea:

The Arapaho gunship. Since, like most VTOLs, is made of paper mache and prayers, its designed to hit you as hard as possible in as short a time as possible, even if that means forgoing battlefield endurance. Hence, the RL/20, MMLs, and a PPC Cap on a LPPC. I'd have used two RL/10s but I maxed the eleven slots available. That Mast Mount is a freebie 'zero slot' equipment, if anyone forgot, although it does still mass 0.5 tons and does make indirect lobbing shots with the MMLs a little easier. I suggest Infernos for the second ton of MML ammo, for those moments everything needs to burn and/or you need to LMGun some PBIs as they cook.

Clan Idea:

The Anasazi gunship. Not quite made of chewing gum, bailing wire, and the undying hatred of 'normal' pilots that keeps VTOLs from landing, like most, it actually has a slightly longer lifespan on the battlefield. LPL on the chin turret, twin APGauss as the nose gun, and two ATM3s - sorry, I needed the extra half-ton that an ATM6 would take up - lets it punch nearly as hard at range as the Arapaho, but also makes it brutally effective against non-BA/PA equipped infantry. Additionally, I managed to fit in an ECM, which means its a speedy bubble that can scoot all over the place rapidly to knock down accuracy where needed. As with the Arapaho, it has a VTOL Jet Booster & Mast Mount.

A possible Society version with iATMs would be hilariously broken due to the other ammo types it could conceivably carry. Such as the Inferno iATM rounds.

The Society version would be vehicle death

The twin launchers probably work for the look of the craft better than a single Launcher

I like these, especially the Clan one. And I'll always love a RAC/5 on anything.

Have you thought perhaps of going the Kamakiri route and using Thunderbolts? Smaller T-Bolts launchers backed by rockets could really give you a gunship feel.

Actually, yes, I have. Repeatedly. Its just that I want to have a nice big old BFG that can hit further than 12 hexes - as mentioned, my belief is that VTOLs are made from paper mache and prayers - in order to stay out of instant-death range. And in order to drop in Thunderbolts, I'd have to drop the chin turret 'gun' to a ERML.

However, that is just me avoiding the obvious, and going mix-tech with a design. But I consider that a bit too broken.

I was aware that if you want the VTOL deadly it is nothing wrong to consider superheavy. It is not that good for recon duty, but 52~60 tons gives them near medium mech level of weaponry while also provides good speed as much as a fast medium as well as gives +1 to hit modifier thanks to airborne. Unlike other superheavy vehicles it does not have front-left/right and rear left/right sides either, and its lower tonnage cap than the other superheavy also means you don't need to pay for ridiculous amount of C-Bill like these.

If you really want that anime rocket spam feel, just stick with RL-10s for all your remaining tonnage after installing the main weapon.  And don't be afraid of dropping down to an AC/2 model...  ^-^

For rocket spam, rather than equip it with your own slots you may use VTOL Bombing rule by TO and add some rockets on it instead. It slows down the vehicle a bit, though. Well, if you REALLY like to spamming the rockets, just do both of them at once!
