Sherman II Medium Tank
« on: 24 December 2020, 12:33:52 »
I am think about to use the 'modern' version of Sherman, although it is not the true sherman. So... let's check the pros and cons of the original sherman first.

Pros:
-Not so bad speed, especially for the later version that keep the good speed even on the rough terrain.
-Very accurate shot with quick succession, and keep its good accuracy while moving.
-Quite resilient, with low chance to catch fire on a hit.
-Tall chassis and many periscope allows the crews to spot the enemy easier.
-Good anti-infantry gun.
-The reliable chassis have much possibility for the furture modification.

Cons:
-It's a medium class - it is not renown for sheer durability.
-Big chassis for its class makes it easy to be spotted.
-It lacks pack a punch.
-Mediocre side armor, and with side ammo rack it may explode on a penetration to the side(that is the basis of the myth that it is burst into flames so easily).

Well, the engineers of 31th century didn't want to repeat the cons part, since they are able to learn from the failure.

Initially it was planned to be the heavy tank, consider the 'medium' class of WWII was now resemble heavy class. But since various try to make it fast was failed, and it was finally decided to be a light tank that is fast but deadly. And you know, Lyrans doesn't care for kroner.

The initial product try to resemble the tank of the old war. Its main gun is a Sutel Precision Line Large Pulse Laser, that have short arm but deadly precision and capable punch, and it is even better with the guide of the Targeting Computer and C3 Computer, although its very fast speed usually makes it the 'spotter' unit for the network instead. Three Light Machine Guns, two on turret and one on front, will deal with the closing infantries, and CASE protects machine gun ammunition.

Despite of its light chassis it have 8.5 tons of resilient Ferro-Fibrous armor and it protects all parts save for very weak rear side. Since the main gun is fueled by its 280 XL(both General Motors, and VOX after its mech facility was burned and can't have the Morningstar to add it), it can still fight after an ammunition explosion. Also it have three charges of recently developed Chaff Pod to avoid get caught while close the distance. It have Trailer Hitches for drag the bogged down friendly tanks or light trailers.

The initial one was a success but keep provide the chaffs was a burden. Also, as the Sherman of the past millenium, the front machine gun was proven as a weak spot, while adding a fixed machine gun didn't helps overall performance since the tank was required to be run all the times. The solution is same - to remove the front machine gun.

And, the generals are requires too intense duty even for the such a light armor just like its predecessor(with the 'help' of WoB scumthe enemy of the mankind), the dev teams are have to put more armor to keep it survive. Although its back is still a problem, but at least it is improved to take a hit of AC/20 and survives. The other sides are also very durable as well. E8 become the standard model because of its well rounded design.

There are some variants:
M4-B3E8-105: The infantry support tank replace the main gun and Targeting Computer by Thumper Cannon with 1 ton of ammunition, and replace the machine guns by two Flamers and Small Pulse Lasers. It has to downgrade the engine to 200 XL because of Thumper Cannon's very heavy weight.
M4-B3E8-C: Replace the main gun by a Plasma Rifle and 1 ton of ammunition, this tank not only burn the infantry, but also able to aim the farther target than the standard E8.
M4-B3E8-E: Instead of machine guns and CASE, it have an Angel ECM to protect the other tanks from sensors and Artemis.
M4-B3E8-FO: The artillery support vehicle, E8-FO removes machine gun and replace it by two TAGs to guide both tube and Arrow IV artillery alike.
M4-B3E8-M: A platoon-company command vehicle, E8-M mounts massive C3 Master Computer in the place of machine guns and Targeting Computer. Because its absence of machine gun may let the enemy to acknowledge it as a master tank, it is recommended to be team with E8-E and E8-FO variants that also lacks the machine guns.
M4-B3-DD: A marine variant, this model (also) removes the machine guns&CASE, then replace it by a Limited Amphibious chassis modification. It wasn't effective as the hover vehicles, but still proves its durability despite of its weight.

Although tank the hit is not the job of the light armors, but sometimes you wish you had an Atlas - and obviously, failed. E2 is an experimental model that at least tank some hits. It retains its good main gun, but reduce the speed to heavy tank level, and use very expensive 200 XXL engine to buy even more weight - just because of plate it with 18.5 tons of Hardened Armor. Because it have to expend every possible tonnage to the armor, it removes all the machine guns, and also CASE because there is nothing to explode. It still retains its Large Pulse Laser with Targeting Computer, and C3 Computer to guide the friends' shots.

The FF model is a specialized anti-armor refit. By sacrifice its rear and side armors, change the engine to 160 XXL and dramatically reduce its speed, it have a Heavy PPC linked with a PPC Capacitor to silence an armor from a distance. It didn't expect a C3 Computer unlike its brothers and sisters, and with bad performance of PPC Capacitor, it didn't considered as a good model.

It still use the default Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armor because it is easier to acquire by their allies.

The remaining weights are filled with two standard Light Machine Guns and AMS. It was actually based on the original E8 model, so it keeps the same armor and points.

Targeting Computer       BD         2.0
CASE                    Body        0.0
Light Active Probe      Body        0.5

A dead(but improved) copy of original FF model, W-FF 2 have the same speed with the original FF, but replace it with XL engine to reduce the cost, and change the weapon by an ER PPC(of Clans grade) and PPC Capacitor just like the original model, that is backed by Targeting Computer. A CASE is still there for possible explosion of the capacitor. A Light Active Probe is squeezed in the remaining space, for such unit that only have a big gun must be fear the ambushers. As W-FF, its armor is remain unchanged.

It was rather fun to think about these.

Yeah, the chassis was reliable, but so was the engine.   It was so easy to maintain that most of the folk fresh off the farm could take their tractor expertise and apply it to the Sherman.  It was also kept from adding advanced tech to produce as many as possible.  In fact, it could be said to be little different from the Panther that invaded Russia, aside from being less over-engineered.

In other words, you took the spirit of Sherman and made the Panther instead.  That it would be Lyran wouldn't surprise me.  The Suns, Confederation, League, or even Periphery would be more likely to build a spiritual descendant to the Sherman, I think.  If anything, I always thought that the Vedette was closer to the Sherman's descendant than anything else.

Well, for me, Panther is a 'heavy-medium' to heavy tank rather than true medium, the Panzer IV. And it was why it was the mistake of US Army - Sherman did nothing wrong, and it works greatly against IVs and infantries, but they push these medium tanks to against heavier medium or even the true heavy tank, same as 'social generals' does in 31th century. It seems not so bad to imagine that it was developed by Lyrans when I design this, right?

But, Panther didn't have much time to develop(and that's why it wasn't stable), so a mixed idea of Sherman and Panther seems not so weird for the descendants of Germany. Something that is nimble and reliable as Sherman, but performs as much as a Panther(that have enough time to trial and error unlike the real one) seems what they may imagine.

Asides, the part of the reason why I choose LPL was, I didn't want to waste the remaining heat sinks and I was initially think about to use a Rotary AC/5 instead. The other part is of course the original's very good accuracy while manauvering, for its stabilizer can keep its aim while on move. Anyway, it is an another reason to pick Lyran as their creator, for FS must be put an AC before think about the concept(bias included). But AC is too cumbersome to make enough room for high powered engine....

Vedetta seems a good alternative, if it is the cheap tank rather than high end fusion tank.

Like the first design . It has a trailer hitch . A 24 ton wheeled trailer is the equivalent of hauling 60 tons so the 7/11 becomes 4/6 .  That is 2 iOS ELRM 20s fire both at medium range of 22 then disconnect trailer and get back the 7/11 movement profile . Each i OS is about 9 tons IS is 2.5 tons . That leaves  about 3 tons of armor  .  Large pulse laser is a knife range weapon that is 2 turns of closing if you smack them with ELRM s  it incentivizes them to close on you fast . It there is alot of rough terrain between  you have one ELRM 15 and a ton of ammo disconnect after shooting 6 shots at the slowest target starting at range 38 . If your tank is in a hull down postion cooking off the Chaff pods when they close to their long range  .  1 Chaff pod firing the trailer  disconect and close 10 hit second Chaff pod so looking at +5 between movement and light smoke.  then knife fight ranges . You can choose 2 iOS ELRM 20 trailers for 4 total shots . As you fire disconnect and forget  it really  does not impact your postion normally  . No on normally shoots at abandoned trailers on the battlefield.  iOS makes shooting at them pointless as weapon phase is simultaneous so unless the have the prescience of mind to stop at range 23 and try to pick off the trailers at range 23 with an ER PPC eating alot of time they SOL .

Wow. Use trailers to make up the short range is a brilliant idea.

One of the reason to drop Chaff Pods on the other design was it is an experimental tech. But... replace the machine guns&CASE by two Chaff Pods seems a good alternative as well.
