All I can think when I see that tank is "where is the 7xAC/2 variant?"
This prototype variant of Kallon's premier air-defence tank was featured in the August 2989 issue of
UCWS Today, and went on to inspire more - if less radical - variants in the same vein, culminating in Kallon releasing a refit kit of its own in 3002.
Kallon's market research had discovered that 31% of all
Partisans sold never drove more than 5km away from the dropship that had carried them, while 24% of all responders asked for greater range on the cannons. A resounding 41% also asked for better protection for their crew.
All these requirements converged in the 'S model'. Intended as a semi-fixed emplacement designed to saturate the local area with fire (hence "S model"), it carried a massive turret with seven light autocannon, an expanded frame with more than double the armour and a downrated, less-powerful engine.
In the magazine's testing, it did indeed achieve what it set out to do - until the flaws began to reveal themselves. The tracking system, long the
Partisan's chief selling point, began to drift out of alignment after just two full salvos. The reviewers guessed that the off-centre gun arrangement and heavier turret were to blame.
Cross-country tests revealed it sank further into sticky terrain (which was not always avoidable, even on landing sites) and had less power to drag itself out. It even grounded itself on rocky terrain that the standard Partisan simply rode over, due to its lengthened tracks and wider frame intended to achieve the same ground pressure. The recovery vehicles typically owned by militia fielding the standard model also had trouble pulling it out.
None of these were insurmountable issues. However, the magazine's final recommendation of "less guns, better mobility" must have caused an internal shakeup at Kallon, as that was the last appearance of the 'S model'
Partisan. The concept still resurfaces occasionally in milita-modified
Partisans, and this Adept has seen mention of a
SturmFeur/
Partisan Frankenvehicle that mounts 7 AC/2 and - yes - weighs 90 tons.
