The Gnat really needs Fractional Accounting.  Cutting the ammo load to half a ton and harvesting a quarter ton out of controls would give it 5 points of armor on the sides and rear...  ^-^

The S14 screams "APC variant" to me.

The original version from the '90s was a ton less, but, well, introtech doesn't allow fractional accounting... ::)

Good point, I wasn't even thinking about that. The hover APC LRM variant is quite similar (faster, less armor, no turret). Couldn't have added the bit about the dirty engine then, thought. ;)

Attempting to equip their light tanks with more firepower some militia units took to simply adding additional weapons to the turret. The Calliope variant of the common Scorpion tank is a common such variant.

The modification is simply a 7-ton box holding ten LRM tubes and a ton of ammo mounted on top of the turret and using the cannon's actuators for aiming. The extra weight severely impacts the Scorpion's already sluggish performance and tends to overload both the suspension and turret actuators, but the potentially tripled firepower is generally considered worth it. Maintenance personnel usually have a different opinion, thought.

To make it a real Calliope I'd replace the LRMs with RL-10s.

If RLs were introtech I'd do that too - but they aren't so I didn't... :-\

The Balor heavy tank is a NETC product based on the old SLDF Demon tank. The old Gauss Rifle was replaced with a standard PPC, along with a single LRM5 to somewhat make up for the reduced power. In addition a pair of MGs were added to deal with the infantry units that became far more common during the SWs.

Unfortunately the switch to a gas turbine engine forced the removal of all the short-range weapons as well as 25% of the armor, strongly discouraging users from deploying the Balor in dense terrain and without support.

Enjoying strong sales early in the 3rd SW the tank lost popularity over time. As of 3025 it is only built on special orders. It is still widespread but in small numbers.

The original Thugtank was built in 2894 out of the remaining parts of a cored Thug battlemech, a Demolisher tank that had gotten its turret blown off, and engines plus some other parts from a half-dozen earthmovers.

Much to everyone's surprise the resulting monstruosity actually worked, leading to a local AFV manufacturer drawing up plans for a production version. As the local economy collapsed during the 3rdSW the company folded and the plans were sold off to any other company willing to pay. Designed to be extremly simple to manufacture and built with a large range of components the tank has never been all that popular, but several factories have the plans in storage as they can often build it with minimal retooling if their usual supply lines are disrupted.

One of the heaviest combat vehicles ever produced in the Outworlds Alliance the KM-80A is yet another victim of "executive medling". Thought in this case the result wasn't as catastrophic as in some other cases.

Originally two different projects for a new wheeled tank and a LRM support vehicle, they somehow got combined into a single vehicle. Rather overweight and slow, the KM-80A still managed a strong showing during trials and was accepted for limited production. 35 LRM tubes provides effective fire support while a single heavy AC makes light units regret closing. A pair of MGs and 11.5 tons of armor provides adequate defense.

The obvious weakness is the vulnerable wheeled suspension. But while troops in the field curse it, the price reduction over a tracked system is deemed worth it higher up in the military.

Thanks to its (relatively) low price the KM-80A has been sold to several mercenaries as well as both DC and FS militia units.

The ironically-named "Distraction" is the custom assault tank of the Blindfold Snipers 1st Company. With its three SarLon MaxiCannon AC/10, it bears less resemblance to the Behemoth that was its base than to one variant of the feared Alacorn. Indeed, that is the point. It is a dangerous, highly-visible target that, with its seventeen tons of armour protection, can survive repeated pummelling from the enemy, letting the rest of the tank company attack their vulnerable rear with Manticores and Bulldogs. Painted in exactly the wrong type of camo for whatever planet the mercenaries land on (orange/brown desert for jungle, green stripes for desert etc.), it is often used as punishment detail.
The Imperator A AC/2 that is mounted in the hull where the LRMs would normally be seems out of place, but its role is that of a goad for enemy units, as well as token anti-air capability. With one ton of salvos for it and four tons for the main guns, it has just enough to get it out of (or into) trouble.

All I can think when I see that tank is "where is the 7xAC/2 variant?"  :D
This prototype variant of Kallon's premier air-defence tank was featured in the August 2989 issue of UCWS Today, and went on to inspire more - if less radical - variants in the same vein, culminating in Kallon releasing a refit kit of its own in 3002.
Kallon's market research had discovered that 31% of all Partisans sold never drove more than 5km away from the dropship that had carried them, while 24% of all responders asked for greater range on the cannons. A resounding 41% also asked for better protection for their crew.
All these requirements converged in the 'S model'. Intended as a semi-fixed emplacement designed to saturate the local area with fire (hence "S model"), it carried a massive turret with seven light autocannon, an expanded frame with more than double the armour and a downrated, less-powerful engine.
In the magazine's testing, it did indeed achieve what it set out to do - until the flaws began to reveal themselves. The tracking system, long the Partisan's chief selling point, began to drift out of alignment after just two full salvos. The reviewers guessed that the off-centre gun arrangement and heavier turret were to blame.
Cross-country tests revealed it sank further into sticky terrain (which was not always avoidable, even on landing sites) and had less power to drag itself out. It even grounded itself on rocky terrain that the standard Partisan simply rode over, due to its lengthened tracks and wider frame intended to achieve the same ground pressure. The recovery vehicles typically owned by militia fielding the standard model also had trouble pulling it out.
None of these were insurmountable issues. However, the magazine's final recommendation of "less guns, better mobility" must have caused an internal shakeup at Kallon, as that was the last appearance of the 'S model' Partisan. The concept still resurfaces occasionally in milita-modified Partisans, and this Adept has seen mention of a SturmFeur/Partisan Frankenvehicle that mounts 7 AC/2 and - yes - weighs 90 tons.

The brief for the grandly-named War Scythe was, "Make a Pike that we don't have to pay so much for."
In that respect, it met its goals, but several compromises had to be made - some for weight, others for parts availability.

The chief one was a switch to wheels over tracks, which let the designers shrink the chassis down to the point it could use mining truck transmissions and wheels, and be powered with cheap and plentiful ConstructionMech 120 ICEs, but hobbled its cross-country capabilities. That dropships could lift more of them at once was considered a bonus for the militia.

The armour is lighter, carrying 7.5 tons Durallex standard plate, and the frame is less durable too. The armament, though, has at least matched the Pike, with three Mydron D AC/2 in the turret. Their ammo is a measly two tons, with just a coaxial machine gun with 100 salvos to cover the short range.

The militia quartermasters were pleased with their new, cheap tank, although the crews of the Pikes these replaced were less so. The hitch on the back was added at the last minute to alleviate their concerns of running out of ammunition.

Well, it certainly lives up to the hype... ;)

3/5 on a wheeled chassis really sucks, but it does keep the cost down. Not so sure it will be a good investment, thought!

Why 46 tons, though?  ???

At 45, it only loses a half ton of armor, but drops a crewman and around 100,000 C-Bills in price...

I'm waiting for an answer in the Rules section if it is allowed to use overrated engines.

I am a big fan of my Ogre battle box to cover a lot of my generic vehicle needs--notably the savanah master, hover transport, vedette, artillery, and infantry work really well.  Sadly, the box has only one kind of missile tank, the 3 large missile low profile tank seen here:
https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.fdc8044dae2091813db4ac49c9fbdd46?rik=OYopLTZUWHDZzw&riu=http%3a%2f%2fwww.sjgames.com%2fminiatures%2fogre%2fdeluxegev%2fimg%2fphoto1_lg.jpg&ehk=BME2aDEwu4rJc9K7dnI1GPjpVVeHBswy0y1ZeB862Qo%3d&risl=&pid=ImgRaw&r=0

I settled on a 35 ton 4/6 tracked vehicle with a tbolt 20.  With no turret and 56 points of armor, the tank is good at delivering 3 tbolt 20 missiles (it has 1 ton of ammo) and then getting out of dodge.  It goes big and then goes home.  It is a design full of compromises, which I think is good for a btech ICE vehicle, but it matches the model, and its not completely useless.  Also, a variant with an Arrow artillery launcher and 5 missiles in place of the 15 ton tbolt 20 is, of course, amazing--but TOO good.
 Thats 2 missiles too many!
Edit: As for the tbolt not being introtech... Fair.  An LRM20 version though has lots of armor, lots of ammo, and is smaller or faster.  In this things case, the TBOLT20 is a downgrade from using an LRM20 or 7 LRM5s.

Correct. It's a penny-wise, pound-foolish design, with decisions that linger long after the requirements it was supposed to fill changed.

I will stand by 'slow wheeled AA platform with long-range guns'.

Designs off the 5 ton increment always flummox me.  I get its a thing, but the 46 versus 45 ton vee isnt different enough to justify the off tonnage.  You could use a 40 ton tracked for a 120 ICE, or a 35 ton wheeled 4/6, if the vehicle was designed around the engine.  Not TECHNICALLY wrong, but 46 tons feels 'itchy.'

To me it's exactly the other way around: All those BT designs fitting in that neat 5 t roster feel really strange when I look at real designs...
M60:     46.0 t
M60A1: 47.7 t
M60A2: 47.2 t

My point was it's NOT penny-wise, though...
In this case, 'penny wise' probably refers to the fact that the AFV reuses common commercial components - a very common industrial engine plus truck transmission.  The designer got so infatuated with the idea of reusing old things, though, that he missed the fact that a purpose-built machine would pay off in the long run.  That's my understanding.

Yet another slow heavy tank that shows up occasionally on both sides of the LC/FWL border the T85 is most remarkable for being completely unremarkable. First produced during the Amaris war in the TH it has been taken up by some minor producer only to be forgotten again for a few decades, and then taken up by someone else.

Not a great performer crews generally like the tank for its spacious interiors, thought quality can vary wildely between different production batches.

The A71 Escalator is superficially quite similar to the M85 but is a much more recent design. First produced in 2971 in the FWL it is almost exclusively used by FWL units.

Intended for use against mechs the A71 mounts a massive PPC in its turret, backed up by SRMs and MGs for use against light vehicles and infantry. The original design intent was low-cost assault tank but its slow speed and high fuel consumption has left it to mostly defensive uses.

Thought is called an "armored car" by its producer the Badger is really a wheeled medium tank. The reason for this classification is political.

First produced in the early 2900s the Badger is a DC vehicle. The design firm had done a serious study of the future needs of the DCMS and concluded that a cheap medium vehicle with long-range capability and a strong main gun would be very useful. However they had also noticed that the DCMS really didn't like the idea of vehicles - especially cheap vehicles - taking the place of mechs.

So the vehicle was pitched as a means of providing extra security for rear echelons and patrols, something it could manage quite well. By also providing a discount to units purchasing the vehicle in bulk they also ensured that Badgers typically didn't have to operate alone, and more than one overaggressive FS or LC raider has found itself fleeing in panic from the combined firepower of a lance of "armored cars".

Originally designed as an IFV the Whirlwind is often used as a heavy scout. The light AC, originally included to provide long-range support for infantry, provides a useful harrassing ability while the paired lasers are capable of inflicting significant damage on most units fast enough to catch the Whirlwind.

First produced for AFFS militias in the late 2600s the tank spread through the Star League to other nations. By the 3rdSW it was produced in limited numbers in the FS, CC, LC, and OA.

MML and SAW both say it should be 9 tons
Wolf wins every fight but one, and in that one he dies, his fangs locked on the throat of his opponent.
