Overview

While Stefan Amaris was the favorite of the then-young Richard Cameron, some planners within the Rim Worlds Republic Armed Forces were not convinced that the Council Lords who held political power during the regency would intervene to protect the Republic in the absence of SLDF forces. Accordingly they began a crash development program to develop military technologies that could be used to fend of a potential attack by the Lyran Commonwealth, who had been instrumental in the conquest of the Republic during Operation: MAILED FIST two centuries before.

While the Republic had a relatively strong infantry and battlemech corps, their vehicle corps had largely been limited to production intended for domestic security. RWRAF planners intended to augment this production with vehicles intended for use in defensive postures against invading Battlemech forces. They approached what few industrial concerns within the Republic capable of manufacturing such vehicles with this request.

One such industrial concern was United Mechanics, LLC, UM had been manufacturing the Ignis light tank for over 200 years, and was considered the leader within the Republic for tracked vehicle manufacture. They had never built a machine intended for combat against Battlemechs, but they felt that their experience with urban combat gave them some insight into how such a unit should be designed.

Capabilities

Their solution was the Verutum, a medium tank based around the strongest energy weapon then in existence, the mighty particle cannon. A lance of such tanks would be a major threat at a distance to even the heaviest enemy Battlemech. Made survivable enough and even one could be such a threat.

United proposed to do this with a combination of mobility and armor. They gave the Verutum an unusually high top speed of over 80 kph, equivalent to some scout mechs. This was intended to allow the tank to get into good positions of fire, shoot, and move faster than enemy heavy mechs would likely be able to respond. This, combined with a full nine tons of standard armor was intended to keep the unit quite survivable on the battlefields of the time.

Close in firepower emulated that of the successful Bulldog medium tank, minus the machine gun. Paired SRM launchers were inteded to make closing with the Verutum as dangerous as fighting it at distance was intended to be. However, due to issues during the design stage United was unable to feed both launchers from a common magazine, meaning that the Verutum carried 50 reloads for the launcher divided evenly in compartments on either side of the turret.

Deployment

The Verutum proved surprisingly popular with the Republic army. Its relatively small size meant that it could be properly supported and transported using smaller vehicle repair bays than tanks of equivalent firepower. Its long reach made it popular with crews, who enjoyed not having to get close to their targets. United Mechanics liked that it was a much more profitable unit to manufacture than the Ignis.

Someone who did not like the Verutum was Stefan Amaris. Amaris’ plans for the Rim Worlds Army centered around battlemech forces as the spearhead, with vehicle and infantry units relegated to occupation duties. He felt that manufacturing light vehicles to face battlemechs was a waste of time and money. He demanded United return to manufacture of the Ignis. United did so, though due to his presence on Terra (and therefore absence from Apollo) construction of the Verutum continued in limited batches.

History

The most famous use of the Verutum occurred on Apollo in 2767, during the invasion of that world by the Star League. In that conflict several companies of Verutum were put to their intended use. One particular tank, known as its crew with the incongruous name of “Doorstop” distinguished itself by single-handedly felling an AS-7D Atlas belonging to the 222nd Mechanized Infantry division.

It did so in part through the use of an advanced technology. The crew of “Doorstop” had managed to get their hands on a shipment of tandem-charge ammunition that had been sent to Apollo for study. They loaded their right-side SRM launcher with this.

They loaded their left with what seemed to be an odd choice, smoke generating missiles. This allowed them to continually generate cover to move behind. During their skirmish with the Atlas they were able to use this cover to prevent their opponent from getting a clean shot. By the time the enemy Atlas were able to close the distance it had been badly damaged enough that the tandem-charge warheads were able to easily disable key systems such as the autocannon and, ultimately, the gyro.

Little is known of what happened to “Doorstop”, though it was likely destroyed either during the invasion or the resultant Republic-Commonwealth war.
