MWO - 8v8 Quickplay Weekend

It's the surprise out of nowhere return of 8v8! Just like the old days where match times are super snappy and four-man groups even more than before determine if it will be a 1 minute or 4 minute match and solo PUGing is a risky prospect. Now with Damage Control Update!

Greetings MechWarriors!

This Weekend we will be changing the Quickplay Queue to 8 vs 8!

Why are we doing this?

We are compiling some gameplay and server data for the Event Mode Queue Design. (Yes we are working on an Event Queue)

We are also interested to see what you guys think of 8 vs 8 compared to 12 vs 12, so please leave a comment in this tread!

If you do not enjoy it, Keep in mind QP will go back to normal after this weekend.

I just wanted to address some of the feedback and/or concerns we've received regarding this 8v8 weekend event:

Yes we're aware we should have provided some heads-up to this event coming, our apologies on that.
This was a PGI initiative for data purposes (see below) and not a Cauldron suggestion etc.
This is not permanent, it will end with the Patch on Tuesday at 10am Pacific Time.
While there has been discussion in the past regarding reverting Quick Play back to the original 8v8 we had at launch, this event is specifically for gathering data for an upcoming Event Mode Queue (more on that coming soon). That being said, if the discussion of permanently reverting back to 8v8 were to come up again, we're now gathering more recent data and feedback.
Yes, we understand that 4-person groups have a lot of influence in 12v12 matches and even more in 8v8, and that is being taken into consideration as well.
Some have expressed concerns that we launched this event while running two other events that have match score requirements. We will be adding 7 days to each of those events.
After this event I will post a new feedback thread on the forum, please participate!

Played a number of drops. It's a surprisingly different gameplay experience. Almost always Domination or Assault. Brief, intense fights. Rarely more than 5 minutes.

I think my conclusion is this:
12 v 12 has more potential, if teams cooperate and coordinate. Which rarely happens in QP.
But if this doesn’t happen and the fight devolves into a barroom brawl, you’re getting a better and quicker version of that in 8 v 8.

I'm not against the concept. I do wish there'd been a little more warning, and maybe not doing it on the first day of an Event weekend would have been nice

Despite the fact that it has always ended in failure, PGI still caters to premades.

I‘m a lone wolf myself.
But I don’t see how/why players should be punished for cooperating and coordinating. Team building is probably part of the game‘s appeal.
I guess teams could be weighed as such in the matchmaker or something. But taking it away doesn’t seem like a good idea.

There have been three game modes specially DESIGNED FOR TEAMS:
1. Group Queue - died due to the lack of interest in 2019
2. Faction Play - zombie without players
3. Solaris 7 - empty village

Obviously, the majority of MWO players has been okay with dropping solo for the most of the time, as the existence of the casual Solo Queue proved because it was the only MWO game mode with some life in it left, back in 2020.

Even if team building, groups and units is useful to the game, MWO has been shockingly bad about supporting it. It took them forever to provide LFG and so much of things needed to support it are not in the client and circling back to solo players are the majority of the player base, unless its within client there no way for most to easily or possibly find. People shouldn't need to go to discord or see whose streaming on twitch to group up on demand, it should be in client.

Which I guess leads back to what this experiment is supposedly about if we don't buy into the Soup Queue Mk II conspiracy thoughts, event queue. I am very worried that the experience shown this weekend means that like Faction Play and Solaris that solo players will try the first few events and nope out as organised group farm until only the groups are left and who will complain about wait times because with declining player base there are not enough groups to get matches quickly even on a specific event weekend.

8v8 was more team thing if anything.  If you didn't team, you were done.  Each time I played, I encourage team i was on work together and stick together as much they could.

It worked.  At least until MWO went offline 3/20/2022

NoGutsNoGalaxy pod cases had most of the guys running the show.  8v8 over now, but they seem to be more concern about throwing off everything if they keep doing 8v8.

Good. I hated 8v8.
I guess it depends on how you play.  Frankly, I had better time. Plus the 8 pack was more effective working as a team verses the Mob like Company size force.
