HBS BattleTech - COIL Origins

Browsing through Sarna, I saw that the COIL guns are said to have been found in the bowels of the crashed mystery ship, like the rest of the LosTech to be found on the black markets throughout the region.

However, each weapon system has its manufacturer appended to its icon.  For COIL, it's Herakleion. 

Herakleion.  AKA Jardine.  One of "The Five" hidden worlds of ComStar cabal fame, dedicated to weapon development.

To me, this strongly suggests that COIL has no relation to the crashed vessel, but instead was put into the wild in the region by ComStar as a way to test out a new weapons system in a region with lots of conflict, where yet another new weapon system wouldn't be noticed amidst the flood of LosTech weaponry.

Very cool thought.  COIL's are fun weapons that keep Lights/fast Mediums relevant later in the game.  ComStar would be very clever to field test the tech for the Guards in the periphery.

I feel like they are HBS's equivalent of Bombast lasers in that they require a charge of sorts to do additional damage.  Thankfully its all apocryphal and not canon, because of exclusion from the Arano Housebook.

Well, there's another interesting bit to add to what you have noticed.

The Heavy Metal DLC introduces both the COILs and the LBX/UAC autocannons to the game and the stores came full of Star League era tech to buy. And the flashpoint missions establish that those weapons came from a crashed JumpShip called the Dobrev, which the name of the Unnamed clan's bloodlines, and the mercenary company ends up retrieving a LosTech BattleMech with the Wolverine insignia on its cockpit. They also quickly repaint the 'Mech to hide its origin.

So now you have a Herakleion - Jardine connection
