TechManual - 29 February 2012 Update (2.2)
« on: 30 October 2011, 22:55:54 »
This thread is now obsolete; please see http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,27319.0.html for the latest one.  Any info in new threads overrides older info.  Thanks.

This thread is for all issues and problems with TechManual.

Product Link: http://bg.battletech.com/?wpsc-product=1095-2

Current errata version is 2.2, and can be found here:
<link deleted>

There are two prints of TechManual - be sure to cite which release you're working from:
2007 - first printing (FanPro)
2007 - second printing (Catalyst)

Please remember to follow the errata report template when reporting issues.  Thanks.

Developer-Level Errata
In case of any contradiction, developer-level errata takes precedence over the current errata document.

The following are the new entries for version 2.2:

BattleMech MASC and TSM Table (p. 52)
Under “BattleMech MASC and TSM Table”, footnote text

"*Percentage of the BattleMech's total weight (in tons). Round this figure up to the nearest full ton/critical slot."
Change to:
"*Percentage of the BattleMech's total weight (in tons). Round this figure normally to the nearest full ton/critical slot."

Artemis IV Fire-Control System (p. 207)
Under “Construction Rules”, replace the first and second paragraphs with the following:

"The Artemis IV FCS is only applicable to standard LRM, SRM and MML launchers (including any one-shot or torpedo versions). If Artemis IV is added to an applicable launcher, every applicable launcher on the unit must have Artemis IV (non-applicable launchers, such as Streak SRMs, may still be installed). For example, if a unit has one Artemis IV-equipped LRM launcher, then every single standard LRM, SRM and MML launcher on the unit must have Artemis IV. Note that while Clan ATM launchers have Artemis IV integrated as part of their design, ATM launchers do not count as an applicable launcher type, meaning you can have ATMs on the same unit as LRM, SRM or MML launchers without Artemis IV.
Artemis IV must be placed in the same location as the launcher it is added to. If a launcher that must receive an Artemis enhancement is set in a location with no space remaining for the Artemis, then Artemis IV may not be mounted on that unit at all, because one of its launchers cannot receive the required upgrade.
For OmniMechs with one or more fixed (i.e. non-pod-mounted) missile launchers, whether or not the fixed launchers have Artemis determines the ’Mech’s usage of Artemis. This cannot be modified through alternate configurations. For example, for an OmniMech with fixed launchers without Artemis, no launcher on the ’Mech, fixed or not, may have Artemis. Conversely, for an OmniMech with Artemis-equipped fixed launchers, all its applicable launchers must be equipped with Artemis.”

Gauss Rifle (p. 219)
Under “Construction Rules”, at the end of the second paragraph insert:

"On aerospace fighters, Heavy Gauss rifles may only be installed in the nose or tail, never the wings."

Retractable Blade (p. 237)
Under “Construction Rules”, after the first paragraph, insert:

"Retractable Blades may only be mounted in a ’Mech’s arms. Installing a Retractable Blade does not require a hand actuator to be located in the same arm, but arms intended to use a Retractable Blade must have shoulder, upper and lower arm actuators."

Targeting Computer (p. 238)
Under “Construction Rules”, second paragraph, first sentence

“The weight of a targeting computer is based on the weight of all direct-fire, non-missile heavy weapons (not counting machine guns, flamers or TAG systems) used by the unit.”
Change to:
“The weight of a targeting computer is based on the weight of all non-missile heavy weapons of the pulse and/or direct-fire Types (not counting machine guns, flamers or TAG systems) used by the unit.”

Transport Bay Table (p. 239)
Under "Small Craft (per cubicle)", change Capacity from “1 Small Craft (up to 200 tons)” to “1 aerial unit (up to 200 tons)

Triple Strength Myomer (p. 240)
An entry changing the intro date of Triple Strength Myomer has been pulled pending review.  For now, assume the original TechManual entry is correct.

Dumper (p. 243)
Under “Construction Rules”, replace the entry with the following:

“A dumper can be installed to any cargo bay type. It must be assigned to some or all of a cargo-carrying unit’s cargo weight, and must indicate the direction it dumps its contents when emptied (Front, Left/Right Side or Rear). The weight of the dumper is equal to 5 percent of the cargo being dumped (rounded up in accordance with the weight standard for the unit in question), and the dumper’s critical/equipment slot must be allocated to the same location where the cargo to be dumped is located. Only one dumper can be mounted per cargo bay.”

Missile Launchers (p. 262)
Under “Missile Munitions”, “Multi-Purpose Missiles”, delete the last sentence (“Weighing in at double the mass…”)

Calculate Base Weapon Battle Rating (p. 303)
Under “IndustrialMech Targeting Systems”

Delete this entire paragraph. The modifier has been moved to “Step 3: Calculate Final Battle Value”.

Step 3: Calculate Final Battle Value (p. 304)
Replace the first paragraph with the following:

"Calculate a ‘Mech’s final BV by adding its Defensive and Offensive Battle Ratings. If the ‘Mech is equipped with a Small cockpit, multiply this total by .95. An IndustrialMech without advanced fire control (see p. 69) multiplies this total by 0.9.
Round the remaining fraction normally to the nearest whole number."

Infantry TAG:
Specialized Infantry featuring this item appeared in the latest revision of Tactical Operations.  However, as the item itself is Tournament Legal, Standard Rules equipment, I've attached the write-up for the gear here; a future revision of TechManual will include it.  Thank you.

v2.1 is a monstrous update - there are dozens of new answers and rulings, in some cases going back four years.  As such, it may be that some of the answers produce their own problems.  We've done our best to ensure that everything is current, compatible, and logical, but if you feel something is contradictory or confusingly written post about it in the Errata Discussion Thread (i.e. not here) and I'll ensure it's sorted out.

Thank you all for your questions over the years that have helped us nail down these issues.

As indicated by the Heavy Weapons Ammunition table on p346, Multi-Purpose Missiles have an Ammo (per ton) multiplier of x1, which means they weigh the same as standard missiles, therefore the following fluff for the MPM on p262 is incorrect:

"The drawback, of course, is weight. Weighing in at double the mass
of a comparable short- or long-range missile, multi-purpose warheads can
limit a battle armor’s options for secondary equipment just to have the
capability of striking submerged targets in the relatively unlikely event of
subsurface combat."

The simplest solution would be to just remove the entire quoted text.

The TM Support Vehicle construction rules originate in Combat Equipment (FPR35017). TM changes the look and feel of them, but retains the system and the contained information.

The chassis availability ratings found in Combat Equipment, p. 88, were forgotten, yet they are needed for the Availability calculation (starting TM, p. 286).

CE p. 88, 4th column states full Equipment ratings (Tech/Avail./Leg.); Legality is not covered by TechManual and Tech is covered in TM, p. 120 (3rd column of the Master Support Vehicle Weight Table). The Availability part of CE p. 88, 4th column is needed as an addition in TechManual, p. 280 - Support Vehicle Structural Costs and Availability in order to be able to calculate the proper unit availability.

[Note: the Simca and Dixon examples on p. 289 mention the importance of size and chassis type for availability, but again, those codes are not currently contained in TM.]

Nicest writing compliment ever: I know [redacted] doesn't like continuity porn, but I do, and you sir, write some great continuity porn! (MadCapellan)

Actually they are in there jymset, pg. 280 TM has a "SUPPORT VEHICLE STRUCTURAL COSTS AND AVAILABILITY" table but there is no IS rating

In the rules box for retractable blades, add the following to construction rules " ‘Mechs may mount retractable blades in the Arm locations only. Each arm may install a maximum of 1 retractable blade, and then only if the selected arm also possess a lower arm actuator."

As per this thread, the Capacity value for the Small Craft Bay entry in the Transport Bay table on p239 needs to change from "1 Small Craft (up to 200 tons)" to "1 Aerospace unit (up to 200 tons)" to account for the ability of Small Craft Bays to carry any Conventional Fighter, Aerospace Fighter,  Fixed-Wing Support Vehicle, Small Craft or DropShip of 200 tons or less.

Page 207, Artemis IV rules.

According to this, fixed SRMs can't have podded Artemis IV at all, so the example of being unable to mount Artemis because of critical slot limits in the head is somewhat ambiguous.

FanPro era PDF but I'm assuming it also covers most recent version because the info was mentioned in a recent discussion

p. 239 "Transport Bay" table
under the "Transport Bay Type" subtable, the "Cargo, Container" line lists weight as 10 tons and capacity as "10 tons per container"

This directly contradicts Mercenary's Handbook 3055 which directly established "a standard, 25-ton container" on p. 90, middle of 4th paragraph in the left column, under the illustration.

Suggested Correction:

to closer match real world shipping containers while also avoiding invalidating any canonical designs built using the erroneous info: revise line into 2 seperate lines with the start of the current line changed to "Cargo, Container (Short)" and adding a second line for the 25 ton container called "Cargo, Container (Standard)"

FanPro print, but I think it's still valid since it isn't in the Errata.

Mod note: oddly enough, this was corrected in the newer printing, but wasn't recorded in errata - I'll make sure it's added in.  The answer is that all the units in question use a 4/5 organization.  Thanks.

"Jason" making Clan Mechanized Troops, from pg 147:

"Jason chooses a Clan Technology Base for his Tracked conventional infantry, and thus limits his soldiers to Clan technology. His mechanized platoon (Point) numbers 25 troopers; the Formations Table indicates it will be composed of 4 squads of 5 troops each. Jason also blacks out Troopers 26 through 30 for his Clan platoon’s line on the Infantry Record Sheet."

from 154:

"Jason’s Mechanized Tracked Point is comprised of 5 squads of 5 troopers each, for a total of 25 troops. Their Primary Weapon is the standard Clan Gauss SMG, and they employ 1 Bearhunter Superheavy AC per squad as a Secondary Weapon. Because Jason has not provided 2 Secondary Weapons per squad, the ranges and modifiers for the Primary Weapons apply, rather than those of the Bearhunters. On the Range Modifiers row for his platoon, Jason notes the following range values, based on the Gauss SMGs: –1 to-hit modifier at 0 hexes/same-hex range (–2 base modifier +1 for the Bearhunters’ Crew Value of 2), no modifier at 1 hex, +2 at 2 hexes and +4 at 3 hexes. Jason then blacks out the rest of the Range Modifiers lines from 4 through 21 hexes, as the platoon may not effectively attack at such ranges.

At 1 Bearhunter per each of the platoon’s 5 squads, the Secondary Weapon damage of 2.33 points each applies for only 5 troopers’ Damage Values. The remaining 20 troopers (25 total troopers – 5 Bearhunter troopers = 20 remaining troopers) deliver the Damage Value for the platoon’s Primary Weapons, the gauss SMGs (0.45 each). The final platoon Damage Value comes to 21 ([5 Secondary Weapons x 2.33 Damage per Secondary Weapon] + [20 Primary Weapons x 0.45 Damage per Primary Weapon] = 20.65, round up to 21). Dividing this value by 25, Jason finds that the average damage per trooper for his Point is 0.84 (21 Damage ÷ 25 troops = 0.84 Damage per trooper). Multiplying each trooper individually, he determines the Damage Value of the platoon for troopers numbered 1 through 25."

from pg 155:

"Jason finalizes his record sheet like his fellow platoon creators, noting that his Mechanized Tracked Bearhunter Platoon has 3 MP of Tracked-type Movement (3 MP base, unmodified for carrying Support Secondary Weapons). He then calculates that at 25 troopers, his platoon weighs 25 tons in all (25 troopers x 1 ton per Mechanized Tracked Trooper Base Weight = 25 tons), and may only be broken down as far as 5 troopers per transport."

And why I think it's an error: The Conventional Infantry Formations (by Tech Base) Table  on pg 147 says that all Clan Platoons (Points) are 5/4, except Foot and Motorized, which are 5/5.

The example should be of 5/4, which is 20. But whilst one part of it (the green text above) reads as though it should be a 20 Troop entry, the rest (relevant portions in red) reads for 25 Troops.

My correction depends on whether the Formations Table on pg 147 is correct or not. If the Table is correct, then all the red text needs updating with the right numbers and calculations. If the Table is incorrect, then the Table and the green text needs updating.

Further to the SO Errata post here: http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,7597.msg411486.html#msg411486

Suggestions/corrections.

pg 209, Bay Doors. "Small Craft, DropShips and Large Support Vehicles that carry other units beyond infantry (conventional or battle armored) should have at least one bay door per transport bay."

Instead, "Small Craft, DropShips and Large Support Vehicles must have at least one bay door per transport bay."

Reason: Transport Bays have an entry for all Infantry and Battle Armored troop types. It doesn't make sense to then have the Bay Door rule be optional. Bay Doors show up on Critical Hit charts, and have an impact on game mechanics.

pg 239, Transport Bays. First, it says that "BattleMechs...cannot install Transport Bays." However, it seems that BattleMechs can be constructed with Cargo, Infantry Bays/Compartments and Battle Armor Bays/Compartments. Not sure why anyone would want to, but they are listed on the 344/345 table as Var*. Some clarifications on either the tables or the Transport Bay section would help.

Second, the text refers to the table as the Quarters/Seating Table. Bit of an odd name for it.

Third, the Infantry, Jump entry seems to have an incorrect weight for the capacity listed. Compared with the Conventional Infantry Weight Table (pg 155) which lists Jump troops as 0.18 tons each, the compartment can't hold the capacity of 28 troops. 28 x 0.18 = 5.04 and the Compartment is only 4 tons. Either Jump troops need to weigh 0.14 tons each, or the Compartment needs to be 6 tons (5.04 rounded up to whole tons is 6, a large increase).

Fourth, the SO suggestion (link at top) includes allowing Fighters to make use of Small Craft cubicles for versatility (and avoid breaking any existing designs). A note on the Small Craft section, or simply a change to the Capacity would do. "1 Small Craft (up to 200 tons)" could change to "1 Small Craft/Fighter/Aircraft (up to 200 tons)"

Edit: Further to some discussion about TBs in the forums, I drew this up. It makes sense, clears up the points above and will be more helpful.

             |Super-Heavy Cubicle             |    200 tons   |            1 (Vehicle)          |4 Light Vehicles/2 Heavy Vehicles/1 Super-Heavy Vehicle

This allows Cargo to be consolidated into a single Bay under the current rules. That means they can share a single Bay Door.

The same can be said for Infantry, Mechs/ProtoMechs, Fighters/Aircraft/Small Craft and Vehicles.

It also allows for the vagueness of the Cargo type, or the Fighter/Small Craft ratio to be determined later. 2400 tons of Aerospace Bay could be 16 Fighters, or 12 Small Craft, or 8 Fighters and 6 Small Craft.

Catalyst Print Edition, page 57 (BattleMech construction Step 5: Add weapons, ammunition and other equipment)
Right column, third paragraph:
"The weapons that may be mounted in multiple locations - the AC/20, Ultra AC/20, LB 20-X AC and the Heavy Gauss Rifle - must be placed in adjacent body locations..."

Problem: This list seems to be exclusive, but it omits artillery weapons (Arrow IV, Thumper, Sniper & Long Tom) which were expressly allowed to split locations under earlier rules (see BattleTech Compendium p. 102; BattleTech Master Rules p. 114).
That would make the Naga and O-Bakemono, for example, illegal designs as they mount an XL engine and therefore have to split their Arrow-IV launchers between side torso and respective arm locations. Also the Schwerer Gustav I think (don't have XTRO:Mercs; have been told it mounts a 7-crit Thumper Cannon, not a 15-crit Thumper Artillery Piece).

Artillery of any type aren't covered in TechManual, which may be the reason for the omission. But the construction rules for artillery weapons in TacOps don't mention either that it is allowed to split their crits across several sections.

I think what the rules should really say is that any weapon that uses 8 or more crits may be split across multiple locations.

And while I'm at it: TechManual says "multiple adjacent" locations. Not "two". For Class 20 autocannon the restriction to "two" locations is mentioned under the item's construction rules on p. 208 ("Autocannon" box). That leaves the door open to include other items that can be spread across more than two locations...

Add the following new entries:

Ultra AC/10     100kg
LB 10-X AC     100kg
Gauss Rifle      125kg
HAG/20           166.66kg
Vehicle Flamer   50kg

LB 10-X
Ultra AC/10
Gauss Rifle
HAG/20
Vehicle Flamer
Large Pulse Laser
Heavy Large Laser
ER PPC

and remove the errata forbidding the ER Large Laser.

Essentially, anything occupying more than 6 crits is forbidden, anything under is okay (unless already specifically forbidden, e.g. ATMs and launchers with Artemis).

The weapons that may be mounted in multiple locations—the AC/20, Ultra AC/20, LB 20-X AC and the heavy Gauss rifle—must be placed in adjacent body locations, and automatically receive the most restrictive firing arc."
Change to:
"Some items, however, may be broken up among two locations (and are noted as such on the Weapon and Equipment Tables).
Any ranged weapon occupying 8 or more critical slots may be split between any two adjacent locations.  If so, it automatically receives the more restrictive firing arc of the two."

Full weapon list affected, including TechManual weapons already listed in the current text:

TechManual: AC/20, Ultra AC-20, LB 20-X (both Clan & IS versions for all three autocannons), Heavy Gauss Rifle, HAG/30 and HAG/40.
Tactical Operations: Sniper Artillery Cannon, Long Tom Artillery Cannon, Clan Rotary AC/5, NLRM 20, ELRM 20.

Plus the Arrow IV, Sniper, and Thumper full artillery pieces that prompted this whole discussion and were previously allowed in the Battletech Master Rules.

Not applicable:
Equipment, physical weapons.  That is not to say that examples of such will never be splittable, but rather that each is considered non-splittable unless, as with all things, rulings in a specific instance override the general.

PDF, 2nd print, p. 205, A-Pod/B-Pod entry:

Unit Restrictions: A-Pods and B-Pods may only be installed on BattleMechs, IndustrialMechs and ground-based Combat and Support Vehicles (those with a Wheeled, Tracked, Hover or WiGE motive system).

Construction Rules: BattleMechs and IndustrialMechs may only mount A-Pods on their Leg locations. B-Pods may be mounted in any location. Combat and Support Vehicles using B-Pods may mount them on any Side location, or on the turret.

Change to:
Unit Restrictions: A-Pods and B-Pods may only be installed on BattleMechs, IndustrialMechs, WiGEs, VTOLs, and ground-based Vehicles (Combat or Support Vehicles with a Wheeled, Tracked or Hover motive system).

Construction Rules: For 'Mechs, A-Pods may only be mounted in Leg locations, while B-Pods may be mounted in any location. Vehicles may mount pods in any location other than the Body.

Note that, in addition to clarifying where A-pods can be placed on vehicles, this also clarifies the mounting of pods specifically on WiGEs, and allows pods to be mounted on VTOLs.

* Pintle Mount (p. 235)
1)   Under “Unit Restrictions”

"Pintle mounts may only be used by ground-based Combat and Support Vehicles (those using a Wheeled, Tracked, Hover or WiGE motive system), Combat and Support VTOLs, and Airship Support Vehicles."
Change to:
"Pintle mounts may be used by any Small Support Vehicle, except those of the Fixed-Wing or Naval motive types."

2)   Under “Construction Rules”, first and second sentences

“Pintles may not be used to mount heavy weapons (those weighing 0.5 tons or more), nor may they mount armor as a turret. The weight of a pintle mount is equal to 5 percent of the weight of all weapons and equipment (excluding ammunition) mounted in the pintle, rounded up to the nearest kilogram for Small-size Support Vehicles, or to the nearest half-ton for all other applicable unit types.”
Change to:
“Pintles may not be used to mount heavy weapons (see p. 20), nor may they mount armor as a turret. The weight of a pintle mount is equal to 5 percent of the weight of all weapons and equipment (excluding ammunition) mounted in the pintle, rounded up to the nearest kilogram.”

* Remote Sensor Dispenser (p. 236)
1)   Under “Game Rules”

“The remote sensor dispenser has no impact in Total Warfare; its use will be covered in Tactical Operations.”
Change to:
“The remote sensor dispenser has no impact in Total Warfare; its use is covered in Tactical Operations, p. 375.”

2)   Under “Construction Rules”

“Any unit with cargo space may devote tonnage to additional remote sensors as “ammo” at a rate of 30 sensors per half-ton.”
Change to:
“Every Remote Sensor Dispenser has a fixed payload of 30 sensors and cannot be equipped with additional remote sensor “ammo”.”

* Remote Sensor Dispenser (p. 268)
1)   Under “Game Rules”

“This equipment has no impact on Total Warfare standard rules play. Its effects will be described in detail in Tactical Operations.”
Change to:
“This equipment has no impact on Total Warfare standard rules play. Its effects are described in detail in Tactical Operations, p. 375.”

2)   Under “Construction Rules”, at the end of the section insert the following sentence:

“The battle armor-grade Remote Sensor Dispenser has a fixed payload of 6 sensors, and cannot be equipped with additional remote sensor “ammo”.”

* Industrial Equipment Table (p. 344)
Under “Remote Sensor Disp.”, change the entry name to “Remote Sensor Dispenser”, and change Ammo (Per Ton) from “60” to “30*”

* Heavy Weapon Ammunition (Cont) (p. 346)
Under “Remote Sensors”, delete the entire line entirely

* Inner Sphere Battle Armor Equipment Table (Cont) (p. 347)
Under “Remote Sensor Dispenser”, change Weight Per Shot (Ammo) from “NA” to “NA (6*)”

* Clan Battle Armor Equipment Table (p. 348)
Under “Remote Sensor Dispenser”, change Weight Per Shot (Ammo) from “NA” to “NA (6*)”

That should take care of it all.  Basically the idea is that each system has a set number of shots (now clearly defined), but cannot get reloads.

Not too sure if this first one is actually something that needs correcting
Tech Manual, First Printing
Pg. 347 (Also TechManual_RecordSheets_and_CompiledTables, pg. 29, possibly others as well) BA Rocket Launchers are Tech Rating E when the 'Mech scale weapon of the same name is Tech Rating B

Pg. 352 (Also TechManual_RecordSheets_and_CompiledTables, pg. 34, possibly others as well) SRM Launcher (Heavy) and SRM Launcher (Light) both have an Exclamation point (!) instead of a capital i (I) in their Tech Rating column for IS

Errata to the errata:

Conventional Infantry Weapons Table, pg 350:

Under Rifle (Federated-Barret M42B Rifle System), change "-Barret" to "-Barrett".

This goes on pg 41 of the errata 2.2 document.

FanPro Printing, page 238
Quote
Unit Restrictions: ProtoMechs, Small Craft and DropShips may not mount targeting computers.
Construction Rules: IndustrialMechs and Support Vehicles that do not feature an advanced fire-control system may not mount a targeting computer.

That can't be right. According to rules as currently written I CAN mount a Targeting Computer on Battle Armor and on Space Stations, JumpShips and WarShips which is strange given that DropShips can't mount it.

Suggested fix: Add Battle Armor, Space Stations, JumpShips and WarShips to the list of units restricted from mounting a Targeting Computer

It's correct.

No Large Craft of any type can carry targeting computers; Space Stations, JumpShips, and WarShips all follow DropShip restrictions in TechManual per Strategic Operations page 153.  Listing them there would be redundant.

The Heavy Equipment section doesn't cover battle armor availability.  Those rules appear in the Battle Armor Equipment section beginning on page 250.

p291-292, (pdf Version 1.2 based on First Printing) in the Heavy Weapons and Equipment Table, there is no entry for the Light Active Probe.

TM p297

The introduction date for the fuel tank for battle armor is given as "3051 (FC) / 2868 (CWF)", but the fuel tank was fitted to the Nighthawk Mk XXX developed for the SLDF in 2744.

Given that it's just a fuel tank, the introduction date should be pre-spaceflight (see power pack for example) or early 2700s (see extended life support for example). Whether it went extinct and the FedCom and Clan Wolf reintroduced it is another matter, but there are examples of battle armor technology that never went extinct (power packs and extended life support for example), presumably being used on primitive exoskeletons.

The attached table corrects BV for certain Clan LRM launchers and their ammo (other than the big four: 5/10/15/20).

Hi all.  TechManual is coming up on an errata release (I have no date for this, other than SoonTM).  This means that now is the time to take an extra-close look at the book.  If you remember making a report in the old forums that was lost in the crash, please repost it, and if there's any errors you know have not been reported at all, this is the time to do so.  No error is too small - even simple typo reports would be great.

This one is on a tight deadline: you have until end of Sunday, 17 February to get your reports in.  Thanks!
