Intelligence report from Hector (Art WIP)
« on: 15 December 2020, 08:15:37 »
My Khan,

It seems that the Hellions are still working away on several projects, whilst they continue to use the Ice Ferret, which they will still call the Wolf Hunter, the amount of resources being poured into their Research and Development complex near their Blood Chapel indicates that the Hellions were working on something. And now, we have proof of these works, albeit in poor resolution. Getting this data cost us three assets and while we are sure the Hellions will not trace it back to us, with us having implicated the Jade Falcons, we should be aware of these new Mechs. Efforts are underway to obtain more data.

Drawn by the amazing Matt Plog. And, as always, thoughts and comments are most welcome!

My Khan.

An addendum to my report, we initially discarded this information as it was thought that the Mech was a version of the Nova Cat's new Shadow Cat. But closer investigation has found that its a different machine, but its design clues make me believe that it is from the same design team.

Newest Project photos?

If Zhukov's focus was Vehicles, and Neptune's focus was Aerospace, perhaps....this is focused on Mechs?

Then I suppose the name should either be Kincaid for the first Mechwarrior or Atlas for the one who made practical myomer bundles.

Sorry bud already a Project: Legion.  Check it out on the fan fic thread.  Forgotten Treasures has links to all past work plus the current continuation of the story.  Also a lot of Marauders work is featured as equipment and vehicles in the storyline.

Well then here's to hoping the next Project of his continues to have inspirational elements.

More good looking stuff. I like your spin on things with your other projects, paying a bit more attention to filling out holes while making a reasonable case. It's not canon sure, but it still feels like Battletech and not silliness.

Location - Chainelane Isles
Date - October 3058

Major Henderson grunted as his Stalker shook as another laser beam cut across his Mech’s torso, the 85-ton Mech rocking back on its heels slightly. ‘This raid’s gone to shit’ He thought, and he wasn’t wrong.
Under the guise of a raid by ‘Mercenaries’, elements of the 2nd Crucis Lancers were hitting deep behind the lines, striking at the Diamond Shark’s OZ in the Chainelane Isles. On Rondane there was a factory that was a prime target, but they’d not counted on there being two Clan’s forces on world. The Sharks were a known factor, but the Ice Hellions? Intel about them was limited and even as the 2nd’s DropShips had landed the Hellions were advancing on them in force and at very high speed.

Recon had marked their Mech’s down as mostly light and medium weight but there was a few that the War book refused to ID and a handful of larger Mechs, again most were known, Loki’s, Thor’s and the odd Man-o-War as well as a pair of unknowns that the War book tagged as an unknown assault weight Mech.

Expecting the Clanners to engage them in a head on clash the 2nd was still offloading its tanks and had deployed two Company’s forward to take the shock of the attack and let the 2nd fully deploy.

“Major! They’re swarming all over us! They’re not fighting like Clanners, they’re teaming up and ripping us apart! Sara on your right!!” The signal had been cut off by the sound of weapons fire then a scream followed by static, and that was the last transmission from the vanguard force.

The Hellions were sure as hell NOT fighting like Clanners, yes their Mechs were small and landing a heavy hit on one could be fatal, but they refused to close the range, dancing around at extreme range, using their longer ranged weapons to gnaw the 2nd’s Mech’s and tanks to bits. Often a single Mech or tank would be engaged by anywhere up to four Mech’s, breaking off from the darting pack of Hellion Mechs, zipping into range before dancing out again, beyond any realistic fire. Only LRM’s and light autocannons were able to effectively reach them, and the few Mech’s equipped with weapons that had been rediscovered by the Helm Memory Core.

“LRM Ammunition supply at 10%”
Major Henderson’s ‘Bitching Betty’ politely reminded him as he volleyed of another twenty missiles at a white and blue striped Mech that fired back with its ER Large Laser, moving faster than a Medium Mech had any right to do.

“Major! Hostile air approaching from 044, heading towards the DropShips!”
“Keep firing! Bring the bastards down!”
“Got one!”
“Captain, armour’s wearing thin!”

The comm’s channel was a confused babble of voices, and then there was swearing and shouts of alarm as the Hellion force wheeled about almost as one and charged, closing the distance shockingly fast.
Major Henderson didn’t have time to give orders, with the Hellions flowing around his Battalion, cutting them off from the DropShips and swarming his command, each Mech was fighting its own battle, cut off from its comrades by the swarming Hellion’s. Yelling commands into his mic, Major Henderson didn’t even see Star Colonel Zara Drake’s Apex storming towards him at over 130kph, the Stalker was starting to swing around but it was far too late as the Clan Mech’s weapons tore into the Stalker’s already battered rear armour and detonated its SRM ammo, shattering the Mech in a tooth rattling explosion.

The raid had come at the worst possible time, the Diamond Sharks were trading Mech’s from their facilities on Rondane to other Clans, and the Ice Hellions had deployed elements of Alpha Galaxy to secure their trade and bring them back to the Homeworlds. When the ‘Mercenaries’ had landed the Hellions had demanded the right to defend their equipment and had moved out to engage what they saw as little more than Dezgra Pirates. The losses for the 2nd Crucis Lancer’s Reinforced 3rd Battalion were total, three DropShips were also captured and the rest destroyed by the furious and eager Ice Hellions.

Apex Totem Mech

Bobcat OmniMech

One more should be added soon when Matt finishes it, thoughts and comments are always welcome and yes, the Apex's speed IS correct.

Yeah it turns out that disruptive patern camo does its job :D the Hellion one especially, it looks like dazzle paint even though it would be blueish grey stripes on a slightly off white main body. But in black and white it works like dazzle camo!

1 - Its a regular Mech, it seems that as a whole the Clan totem designs are standard Mechs and not modular so that's what I went with

2 - The Vendetta should be done within a day or so :)

And here's the Vendetta OmniMech

All done by the amazing Matt Plog, the Vendetta is a 55 tonner. Whilst not too fast by Ice Hellion standards, the Vendetta is still capable of short bursts of very high speed. It's also heavily armed and capable of engaging targets at all ranges. Unfortunately its interior, much like the Frenzy and Apex are cramped nightmares to work on and whilst the Vendette can carry a considerable tonnage of weapons, its tight confines means it can't carry large weapons easily.
Despite these drawbacks, the Vendetta is loved by Warriors, even if the Technician's hate the finicky 'Hangar Queens'.

I can see how you'd say that :D And looking at it I can see it too! Another friend said it looks like its got bits of an OST design in there. The original brief was

Perhaps based in part on the - https://cfw.sarna.net/wiki/images/6/65/Exterminator_Caine_XTROGunslingers.png?timestamp=20180115002535 But with a bulked up torso to try and fit the weapons, as well as more hard, angular edges to it instead of the smooth curves of the Exterminator. Both hands have fists and I'd assume the main weapons in the arm would be mounted under the forearm and the ER small's would be on the side.

But with Matt I trust him implicitly, and he's always interpreted my gibbering and braying into something like what I want :D

A WIP of a Hellion Elemental in standard armour

The Hellions rarely made use of standard infantry formations and often it was solhama personnel who would be equipped with little more than a rifle and a few grenades, or used as security forces. Due to their lower number of Elementals, they were not used in a heavy infantry role, instead they'd form part of a Khan's honour guard when visiting facilities or locations where Elemental suits were simply too impractical.

Sir,

It appears that the Jaguars have reactivated Subsidiary Site 04/D on Huntress to produce the quadruped testbed they had once made there. I know that the Jaguar's are desperate for Mechs following Tukayyid and have been unable to strong-arm other Clans in Trials, this attempt to increase their industrial output is notable, as is their Merchants trading as aggressively as possible for any resources as they attempt to rebuild their battered touman.

We have also seen an increase in production at Production Plant DL-6 and have some initial images of a Mech that appears to be based on the Ebon Jaguar, but it appears heavier and clearly incorporates parts from the Warhawk such as its left arm assembly and a modified version of its leg actuators. More data on both is to follow.

Merchant Factor Kara (Barbaro)

I must report good news! The transition from an orbital mobile factory to a ground-based one on Rondane has been a success and the facility is operational and now fully staffed. Although there have been quality control issues, it seems the locals are more than happy to work for us, and this bodes well for the rest of our Occupation Zone and future expansion plans.

Of course we must still import weapons systems, and the electronics, but these issues can be overcome and at the moment most of our trade is going into the Inner Sphere and if we have to deliver units to the Homeworlds, we can merge them with their weapons and electronics there. Production is now underway albeit at a lower rate whilst we work out all the kinks and ensure the factory personnel are up to standards.

By any standards these are quite simple machines, but they are more than capable of serving in defensive roles in PCGs which are being stripped bare by the Invading Clans to rebuild their frontline forces, so we can expect many successful Trades.

Please find attached a projected cost/benefit analysis as well as our planned production schedule and expansion plans.

Attention. This is an MRBC Update.

Forces raiding into Clan Nova Cat or Smoke Jaguar territory need to be aware of a potential new threat, it seems the Clanners are repurposing salvaged Mechs for defensive formations. Elements of Redaxes' Rampagers encountered what initially appeared to be 'friendly' resistance forces in the form of a pair of Panthers but both Mech's opened fire on the Rampagers, downing a Valkyrie and Cicadia before disengaging, both Mechs were unresponsive to hails and allowed the Rampager scouts to get close before engaging.

The Cicadia was engaged at longer range than would be expected as it ran, and it appears the PPC of these Mechs' has been replaced with a Clan large laser, and there are additional missile ports which are the main identifiers, if any of these machines are salvaged please see the below links for good prices on any materials recovered.

Drawn by the amazing Matt Plog.

LB-2's and ERML's yes, there's no advanced equipment or materials used in its construction and its gained 5-tons of weight, this WIP is also missing the 4 MG's its meant to have and its got thicker armour than its cousins.

I wish to report success in our latest Trial against Clan Burrock we obtained the two Stars of Mechs they had produced and I think they will look far better in Scorpion colours. Once landed they will of course be presented for your inspection.

Manul OmniMech.

Developed in the 3040's as a prototype design that could have replaced the Mist Lynx aka Koshi, the Manul, named after a small predatory Terran cat was a rare foray by Clan Smoke Jaguar into quad mech design. Although it couldn't jump, the Mech could run slightly faster than the Mist Lynx, the 20-ton quad didn't proceed beyond the prototype stage and lost out to the Arctic Cheetah aka Hankyu as the replacement for the Mist Lynx.

Largely forgotten at the time of REVIVAL, the Manul would see a second lease of life in the aftermath of the battles of Tukayyid and Luthien which saw the Smoke Jaguar's touman greatly reduced following heavy casualties. With Khan Lincoln Osis in a coma, Khan Brandon Howell turned his efforts to rebuilding the shattered touman, and one of the mech's that he turned to was a dusty prototype quad-mech that was able to start production now.

The Smoke Jaguar's usually took what they needed off other Clans in Trials, and lacked the industrial capacity to build many Mechs, but the Manul was ready to go and quickly authorised for production.
Although it took time to get use to the Manul's curious and lolloping gait, especially when at full speed, Warriors came to approve of the little Mech that had a big bite.

Both Clan Warriors and Inner Sphere forces also referred to the Mech by its unofficial name of Corgi.

Drawn by Matt Plog., yes stats are coming but they'll be in a fan publication, thoughts and comments are always welcome! (and yes that is a Corgi with a gun as its nose art)

Well...speaking of that...

Panther C/IIC

Desperate for any Mech's to use following the disastrous losses at Luthien and Tukayyid, Clan Smoke Jaguar and Clan Nova Cat took an unusual step of reconditioning salvaged Inner Sphere Mechs. As their shared OZ was in the Draconis Combine, one of the most common Mechs salvaged was the Panther and there was enough wrecked Mechs to rebuild them quickly.

The Smoke Jaguar's was the crudest, replacing the PPC and SRM-4 with an ER Large Laser and a SRM-6 and adding standard heatsiinks from captured stockpiles for a 'quick and dirty' solution to get Mechs as quickly as they could.
Clan Nova Cat's conversion was more extensive, using the same weapons, they instead scoured mechs like the rather common Firestarter of their engines and installed those instead, using captured Inner Sphere double heatsinks for cooling.

Whilst far from popular with the Warriors who were assigned them, a Mech was still a Mech and during raids into Smoke Jaguar or Nova Cat territory these recondiitioned machines proved to be an unexpected and nasty surprise for Mercenary or House forces raiding over the border.

Sabretooth Heavy OmniMech.

The assault weighted Clusters of Clan Smoke Jaguar were horrifically effective but they were comprised of some of the most resource intensive Mechs ever made. And following the losses at Tukayyid and Luthien the Jaguars were very hard pressed to replace these losses owing to their rather limted industrial base. Long use to simply taking what they needed from other Clans in Trials, the Jaguar's now lacked the capacity to do so.

Khan Brandon Howell ordered that his Scientists and Technicians work to produce a cheaper stopgap design with any materials they had to hand. The result was a heavily reworked Ebon Jaguar (Cauldron Born) that had its skeleton reinforced to push it up to 75 tons whilst also incorperating parts from the Warhawk as well as other large Mechs. Slower than most Clan Heavy Mechs' the new design called the Sabretooth traded speed for firepower and served ably as a 'pocket assault' Mech.
Upon his recovery, Khan Lincoln Osis approved of the Mech and kept it into production with the factory producing the Mechs' later being claimed by Clan Goliath Scorpion.

Drawn by Matt Plog, as always thought and comments are most welcome!

It looks very good and it has a bit of a 'War of the Worlds' vibe, so it could qualify for the distracting quirk.

And last but not least for now, the Ice Hellion made and designed Light Mech, and note that this thing in the AU its in, enters service in the late 3040's. (And the Supercharger that they have is a slightly different one, at least until its perfected in the 3060s and yes there will be optional rules for it!)

I have to admit I honestly didn't realize the difference until I looked up the rules for a supercharger. A 2.5x increase vs a 2.25% really shows the difference with faster units.

The old art for the Ice Hellion species NEEDED re-doing. The poor thing looked like it was some minced beef put on a potato, rolled in hair from the floor of a barbers and then put in the mircrowave for 30 minutes. It also does not help that the fluff for it is very contradictory, some sources say its a flightless bird;

Quote
The flightless Ice Hellion birds

whereas this thing - https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Ice_Hellion_(species) is anything but a flightless bird and is more a therapod like dinosaur that's trying to be 'extra'. And then there's the Hellions symbol which looks more like a secretary bird, and there's also art for Ice Hellion units depicting a tusked but squat and fat quadrupedal thing with a beak and tusks. So there's zero consistency.

So with this in mind I contacted Matt Plog about doing a take on the Ice Hellion, we kept the same kinda 'raptor' esque shape (and size, the Veloceraptor of Jurrasic Park fame was only really about the size of a turkey, the Ice Hellion's 40cm tall) but instead of it running on two legs it can move as either a biped or quadruped (which is needed for running on snow and ice) as well as eliminating any raptor like killing claws on the feet. Instead we made the Ice Hellion all about the bite.

I'm sure folks have seen that vid of the Aligator Snapping Turtle biting down on a water melon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgSurkfqXuI and here its the same, I asked him to model the head somewhat after a Snapper's but the 'problem' is that in all the art, Ice Hellions have these rather pronounced tusks that would get in the way of any bite. So in the fluff write up where i've headcanon expaned on them, the Ice Hellion has a very wide gape when it bites something, and here the tusks are useful because they dig in and gouge whatever they're biting, in addition to the beak acting like some organic bolt cutters.

Add lots of floof because Hector's damn cold, cold weather adaptions like the broad, padded and furry feet to act as snow shoes (not without precident, Canadian Lynx's have something similar) and I think we're a bit closer to something that works better as an animal rather than the hair covered burger potato. Oh and he put in a bit of sexual diamorphism, the female's the one on the right and she's a bit bigger than the males.

Any feedback is most welcome!

The old art for the Ice Hellion species NEEDED re-doing. The poor thing looked like it was some minced beef put on a potato, rolled in hair from the floor of a barbers and then put in the mircrowave for 30 minutes.

YES!  :D

So I'm seeing a Dire Wolf Widowmaker and an Executioner getting toasted, with a Battle Cobra Prime running past.  That's pretty action-packed - love it!  That Battle Cobra is just gorgeous!

I can't help but observe how much Matt Plog's art has improved over the years.  I can look at it forever :)  Now you just need a colorist!

I like it more than your initial version you can properly see the difference that makes it a "nova" I would not want to meet one of them that was in a bad mood

Fortunately Nova Cats are not psychotically aggressive unlike Smoke Jaguars, and I'd assume that they'd more flash their quills and make a show as a 'back the hell off now!' display rather than just going "IMMA KILL YOU!"

Its not really the one Ice Hellion you need to worry about, its the fact they come at you in packs up to 40 strong :p

Then again, in the Homeworlds jungles there's bigger things to be worried about....

I'd like to get some re-done for sure, the next one will probably include the Hells Horse because to me, that thing makes NO sense other than the writers going "Oooh the Mares of Diomedes!" back in the 90's, because that's what the HH is clearly based on, the flesh eating horses of Greek myth that Hercules had to steal as one of his labours.

Also it makes no sense that you'd get a herbivore that could best be described as a couch with anxiety and reverse engineer it so much that you turn it into an omnivore but one who's main diet is meat.
So in my mind it would be easier to turn the Hells Horse from a spicey normal horse, into a horse like analogue that was native to Niles in the 1st place. And the Hells Horses symbol (that of a normal horse) is a stylized version of it rather than it being probably the hardest scientific experiment there is, think

rather than

but because it looks a bit weird instead the Hells horses stylized it.

The Jade falcon could use just higher fidelity art, because they didn't mess that up, its just a small picture of a bird, the Coyote and Wolf are...well they're Coyotes and Wolves, so nothing needed there. Its a matter of time and money, so...check out my gofundme :p Only kidding :D

I think they meant the picture, the project which it is for is largely done in terms of fluff and is undergoing final polish and proofing before being put into a PDF :)

A re-done and re-thought Smoke Jaguar. The fluff paints these animals as being almost psychotically aggressive and will kill things purely to kill them and even if they've eaten, they'll still kill stuff they come across. Indeed the Smoke Jaguar was designed to be an apex predator. So headcanoning, with this we leaned into that, whilst the scientists also worked in some flaws to stop them spreading too far.

They worked in the genes that make animals have extra muscle mass thanks to fiddling with their myostatin genes (like some of the bulls and cows you've no doubt seen pictures of where they're like freakishly muscled) to give them a LOT of power with their claws and jaws. But this was also designed to basically put a lot of strain on the animals body and its heart to cut down on their lifespan and would hopefully mean that a Smoke Jaguar will live for about 6 - 8 years at most. This didn't actually pan out.

The other thing they have that makes them different from their cannonical art is very short fur. They're jungle and sub-tropical jungle hunters, their bodies don't store much fat and their fur's more akin to a greyhounds, it does not keep heat in. So the Smoke Jaguar is genetically limited to the areas it can roam and expand to as they suffer very badly in cold temperatures.

The result is a rather different animal from the canon one but one I think captures the feel and power of the Smoke Jaguar and thoughts and comments are always welcome.

Formerly the CMS Pollux the last surviving Ocean Class heavy cruiser along with her sistership the CMS Castor were primary elements of Clan Mongoose's naval reserve prior to the absorption of the Clan. The Ocean class was built as a challenger for the SLDF's next heavy cruiser program, and although the Luxor class won this program, the SLDF still ordered two of the class. The Lyran Commonwealth, to support the ships designers and builders also ordered 20 and would use them as their mainline heavy cruiser.

Massing 850,000 tons the Ocean class was a large, capable WarShip and the two SLDF ships the Atlantic and Pacific were used extensively as trials and training ships where they often formed the core of the OPFOR of a naval exercise.

Departing with EXODUS these cruisers along with the battleship Quicksilver Mongoose were the largest WarShips in service with Clan Mongoose, and all three fought at the battle of Circe. Here the Castor suffered crippling damage and was abandoned by her crew prior to her bow magazines detonating, and the Pollux was forced to surrender when challenged by the Smoke Jaguar's Texas class battleship and her escort group.

Following the Absorption of Clan Mongoose, the Pollux was renamed and taken into service by Clan Smoke Jaguar, but she was seen as a 'tainted' ship due to her history with the Mongooses and as soon as the CSJ Scharnhorst was commissioned, the ship was mothballed over Huntress.

They will suffer against the Ice Hellions  >:D
In turn they tested each Clan namesake
In trial against the ice hellion's mettle.
Each chased the ice hellion, hunting it down.

It seems the original cannonical one had just coloured quills that it could stick up in a threat display, and we was gonna go with that but the artist was like "What if its biochemical?" and I was like "YES!"
